International Journal of Advanced Health Science and Technology (IJAHST) publishes peer-reviewed, original research and review articles in an open-access format. Accepted articles span the full extent of the Public Health, Environmental Health, Nursing, Oral and Dental Health, Midwifery, Nutrition, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Biomedical Engineering IJAHST seeks to be the world’s premier open-access outlet for academic research. As such, unlike traditional journals, IJAHST does not limit content due to page budgets or thematic significance. Rather, IJAHST evaluates the scientific and research methods of each article for validity and accepts articles solely on the basis of the research. Likewise, by not restricting papers to a narrow discipline, IJAHST facilitates the discovery of the connections between papers, whether within or between disciplines.

Abstract

Many laboratory installations have not implemented quality assurance periodically due to the high cost of purchasing control materials. This study aims to determine the difference in Variant Index Score value of homemade lyophilized serum with commercial parameters of SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, BUN, glucose, uric acid, triglycerides, and cholesterol. The research was conducted in January–May 2023 at the Surabaya Health Center laboratory, the reference laboratory, and the Ubaya Technobiology Faculty using descriptive comparative research with a quantitative approach. The test material used was homemade lyophilized serum, with the research variable being the VIS value of lyophilized serum. The results of the analysis showed a comparison of the VIS value of homemade and commercial serum based on the participant's target values of SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, BUN, glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol parameters obtained a significance value of 00,759; 0,983; 0,160; 0,994; 0,413; 0,797; 0,318; and 0,262, and based on the true value target values of SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, BUN, glucose, uric acid, triglycerides, and cholesterol parameters obtained a significance value of 0,70; 0,973; It is concluded that there is no significant difference in VIS value between homemade and commercial lyophilized serum, so homemade lyophilized serum can be used as an option for control material to replace commercial serum for laboratory quality assurance.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the compatibility of platelet histogram results with IP Message on the hematology analyzer Sysmex XN-1000 for the platelet morphology of peripheral blood smears of thrombocytopenia patients. This was a quantitative descriptive study of 54 samples taken using the saturation sampling technique at Grati Pasuruan Hospital from April 1–30 2023. The results showed that the histograms that often appeared were abnormal heights on the PU Flag and the IP Messages that often appeared were “PLT Clumps?”, “PLT Abn Distribution”, and “Thrombocytopenia”, with a compatibility level of platelet morphology on peripheral blood smear examination reaching 90.7%. The study concluded that there was a high compatibility between the platelet histogram results accompanied by the IP Message and the platelet morphology of the peripheral blood smear of thrombocytopenia patients, which could improve the accuracy and efficiency of platelet count examination.

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is recognized as one of the prevalent occupational ailments that can significantly influence work productivity. Within the Warship Division Production Support Department of PT. PAL Indonesia, employees have reported instances of low back pain following prolonged periods of working in a seated position, slightly bent over computer screens, for approximately 8 hours daily, in a routine manner. This study aims to analyze the correlation between the duration of work and the occurrence of spinal trauma in relation to the prevalence of low back pain. Conducted in an analytic observational framework with a cross-sectional approach, this research encompasses all personnel within the Production Support Department, comprising a sample size of 39 workers. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted employing the Fisher's Exact Test. The study outcomes indicate that 71.8% of the workers experienced LBP characterized by minimal disability, whereas the remaining 28.2% reported LBP associated with moderate disability. The study also found that the majority of workers had a moderate work duration (4-5 hours/day) (35.9%), had no spinal trauma (76.9%), and complained of LBP with minimal disability (71.8%). The statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between work duration (p-value = 0.028) and spinal trauma (p-value = 0.000) with the occurrence of LBP. In order to mitigate the LBP, workers are advised to attentively address the relevant risk factors present in their workplace. This proactive approach aims to minimize the incidence of LBP arising from their routine tasks.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an important health problem in Indonesia, the problems more complex with phenomenon of multi-drug resistance Tuberculosis (MDR) which cause worse prognosis, long treatment, high risk of transmission to other and side effect of treatment. Vitamin D plays a role in non specific and specific immune responses in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infection. Vitamin D have a role in hematopoiesis and affects the early development of monocytes and granulocytes. M.tb infection causes changer in the ratio of neutrophil cells, lymphocytes and monocytes. Changes in the ratio reflect an increase or decrease of effective immune response. Using a case control design, this study will evaluate the correlation between vitamin D, leukocyte ratio and MDR-TB patients among MDR-TB patient cases and TB patient controls. Independent variable in this study were vitamin D levels, leukocyte ratios consisting of NLR, MLR, NMLR, and clinical status of respondents were the dependent variable. The result of this study found that vitamin D levels of TB patients all showed values that were within range of in the insufficiency and deficiency categories. From this result TB patients must coverIn addition, the NLR and NMLR parameters were able to show that immune status problems were mainly found in the MDR-TB patients

Abstract

Borax was still utilized in the process of making food, one of which was making meatballs. Meatball traders added borax to extend the short shelf life of meat and increase the chewy texture, as well as to give the meatballs a more white color. The research objective was to analyze the borax content of meatball samples in market X Surabaya, Indonesia in 2023. Analytical observational research method, the variables studied were the physical quality of meatballs and the borax content in meatballs. The object of this research was 12 meatballs sold by all vendors in Market X Surabaya, Indonesia. The results of the organoleptic test researched obtained 4 meatball samples (34%) with good assessment criteria, most of the 7 meatball samples (58%) with sufficient assessment criteria, and 1 meatball sample (8%) with poor assessment criteria. Laboratory test results 1 meatball sample (8%) contained borax, with physical characteristics of chewy texture, pale gray color, tart taste, and fishy smell. The conclusion of this studied was that 1 out of 12 samples had physical characteristics of meatballs containing borax and borax content was related to the organoleptic test with a significant valued of p-value = 0. 032. Suggestions for traders to used alternative ingredients to replaced borax, namely carrageenan (seaweed) to improved the physical quality of meatballs in terms of texture, color, and smell.
