Abstract

Throw-away culture is a living habit of modern society that views goods as having a relatively short period of use without any desire or effort to recycle or extend the period of use. In this culture, things are easily seen as useless, needing to be replaced by something else, the newest and most updated. This phenomenon received special attention from Pope Francis in his encyclicals, especially Laudato Si, which contains the Church’s Social Teaching, namely “preferential options for the poor”. This ‘disposable’ culture is one of the roots of the environmental crisis, which also has an impact on the social crisis. Why might the “disposable culture” have an impact on the social crisis? Through qualitative research using literature analysis techniques, researchers will answer this main question from the ethical perspective of Laudato Si through three main studies, namely Laudato Si, ‘disposable culture’, and the social crisis in modern society.

Abstract

This article explores the evolving concepts of sin and punishment through an interdisciplinary analysis rooted in theology and legal theory. It examines how theological traditions understand sin as a spiritual rupture and punishment as a path to restoration, while legal systems treat punishment as a rational mechanism to uphold justice and social order. The study traces the shifting boundaries between divine justice and secular law through historical and thematic analysis, revealing how moral responsibility, repentance, and mercy have been interpreted across various contexts—from ancient religious codes to Enlightenment jurisprudence. The article also analyzes contemporary ethical debates surrounding retributive and restorative punishment models. By integrating theological reflection with legal-historical insights, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how societies conceptualize wrongdoing and justice and advocates for more holistic approaches to moral and legal accountability.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role and position of women in the Makassar Bugis society and how the understanding of women's socio-cultural position can be an entry point for contextual gospel preaching. The results of the study show that Makassar Bugis women have a respectable position and a significant role in various aspects of life, including religious rituals, family decision-making, and the preservation of cultural values. This important role is rooted in traditional myths that are still firmly held today. The contextualization of the proclamation of the gospel can be done by utilizing women's strategic position in society, transforming their ritual role into ecclesiastical ministry, and developing an approach that respects local cultural values while affirming the truth of the Gospel.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the Biblical perspective on alcohol consumption and its implications for congregational development, focusing on the GKII Damai Tumbang Kaburai congregation in Central Kalimantan, which used the traditional alcoholic beverage Baram. Using a qualitative-descriptive method through Biblical review and interviews with local informants, the study found that the Bible gave clear warnings about the dangers of intoxicating alcohol, while also acknowledging the use of wine in cultural and health contexts when consumed with control and positive purpose. The findings emphasised that the congregation should prioritize God's word above cultural traditions that could be harmful, provide a life example in accordance with Christian teachings, and develop healthier, safer cultural alternatives. This study was expected to serve as a foundation for more effective congregational guidance in addressing social and spiritual challenges related to alcohol consumption.

Abstract

This study addressed the social and scientific importance of understanding pastors’ perceptions of “Mission Month” and its relationship to church mission movements, particularly within the GKII Central Java 1. The research aimed to analyse how pastors comprehend the significance of Mission Month and how this understanding influences the effectiveness of mission initiatives at the local church level. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through purposive sampling of eight ordained pastors with at least three years of service, employing unstructured and in-depth interviews as well as participatory observation. Results indicated that pastors perceived Mission Month as a strategic period to mobilise congregational participation in evangelism and mission, reinforcing commitment to the church’s vision. The effectiveness of Mission Month was closely linked to the pastors’ transformative leadership and managerial abilities.
