Abstract

Differences in cultural backgrounds, languages, and communication styles, particularly between students from Java and those from outside Java, create communication barriers in the 2023 Information Systems A class at STIKOM Yos Sudarso. These barriers affect classroom interaction and learning processes among students who come from diverse regions of Indonesia. Segregated seating patterns and suboptimal academic performance further illustrate the dynamics of the class. This study aims to analyze the application of Driyarkara’s andragogical concepts as a strategy to resolve intercultural communication conflicts and to create a more harmonious and effective learning environment. This research employs a qualitative method with data collected through literature review, interviews, group discussions, and reflective video analysis. Data were examined by comparing field findings and student reflections with theoretical frameworks. The results reveal four types of communication barriers: status effects, semantic problems, perceptual distortion, and cultural differences. The application of Driyarkara’s andragogy, emphasizing concrete experience, critical reflection, humanistic dialogue, and active participation, effectively reduces intercultural misunderstandings, enhances collaboration, and fosters a more harmonious, inclusive, and productive classroom atmosphere. In-depth discussions designed to uncover fundamental realities, along with shared reflection, allow students to understand one another’s cultural backgrounds, enabling more effective interpersonal communication. These findings affirm that humanistic and contextual learning approaches are effective in overcoming communication barriers in multicultural settings, particularly within modern higher education institutions

Abstract

The Pacu Jalur tradition is a cultural heritage of the Kuantan Singingi community that faces significant challenges due to changing media consumption patterns and the dominance of global digital culture. This study aims to analyze how the Instagram account @kuantanesia contributes to the preservation of Pacu Jalur’s cultural identity through visual representation practices, cultural storytelling, and strategies for leveraging social media algorithms. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, including content observation, visual analysis, and digital interaction tracing related to the cultural activities of Pacu Jalur. The study adopts Regina Luttrell’s Circular Model of Social Media as the conceptual framework to map the digital communication practices used by @kuantanesia in conveying cultural messages. The findings reveal that @kuantanesia functions not only as a documentation platform but also as a cultural intermediary that reconstructs Pacu Jalur’s identity through visual aesthetics, localized storytelling, and the use of Instagram features such as photos, short videos, and Reels. Consistent cultural representation enhances the visibility of cultural content and strengthens the collective memory of the Pacu Jalur tradition among the public. Additional findings indicate that algorithmic strategies including posting frequency, hashtag usage, and visual narrative styles significantly contribute to increased reach and user engagement. This study concludes that social media serves as a space for cultural revitalization as well as an arena for identity negotiation amid the symbolic competition of global digital culture.

Abstract

Matcha has become one of the most popular culinary products among consumers. With the increasing trend of matcha consumption, the number of matcha-based culinary businesses has also continued to grow. This has led to competition that must be faced, one of which is by strengthening branding and marketing communication efforts. Kaze Matcha, as one of the matcha-based culinary entrepreneurs, has successfully built a strong brand identity and awareness through the implementation of an integrated marketing communication strategy. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to describe the role of integrated marketing communication in strengthening Kaze Matcha's product branding. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with interviews, observations, and document studies as data collection methods. The results of the study show that the application of IMC combined with digital marketing strategies, such as the use of Meta Ads and participation in various offline events, has proven to be effective in expanding brand reach while building direct engagement with consumers. Collaboration with communities and F&B MSMEs has also strengthened the brand's creative, authentic, and adaptive character to market trends. This study also shows that the implementation of IMC strategies, digital marketing, and collaboration has been proven to increase brand awareness to the point of brand recall. Therefore, this study can also be used by Kaze Matcha and other matcha-based culinary entrepreneurs to develop more specific strategies to increase engagement and brand awareness in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the issue of ethical degradation in communication on social media within the context of globalization and technological acceleration, which together give rise to the threat of technetronic ethnocide. The purpose of this research is to gain an in-depth understanding of these phenomena through a reflective approach in order to formulate a foundation of digital communication ethics that is relevant to the dynamics of contemporary society. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive reflective character within an interpretive–critical paradigm and adopts a library research design through literature reviews and the analysis of relevant documents. The analytical technique used is conceptual thematic analysis, which involves identifying issues, categorizing themes, interpreting meanings, and conducting reflective synthesis to generate a more comprehensive conceptual understanding. The findings indicate that social media is ambivalent in nature: on the one hand, it expands public participation, while on the other hand it accelerates the spread of hoaxes, hate speech, identity-based polarization, and the erosion of communicative civility. Referring to Eric Voegelin’s distinction between substantive and pragmatic communication, this study emphasizes the importance of strengthening communication ethics and digital literacy in order to balance freedom of expression with social responsibility.

Abstract

Children's mental health issues remain a serious problem within families, especially those experiencing conflict and disharmony (broken homes). Parents' low awareness of the importance of children's mental health and strong negative stigma in society leave children vulnerable to psychological disorders. The film Bolehkah Sekali Saja Ku Menangis represents this reality through its depiction of physical and verbal abuse within the family, which has an impact on the mental condition of children. This study aims to analyze the audience's reception of the issue of children's mental health as portrayed in the film, particularly from the perspective of children who have experienced mental health disorders due to broken home situations. This study uses a qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's reception analysis method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five informants aged 18–30 years who had broken home backgrounds and experiences of mental health disorders. The analysis technique was carried out by applying the encoding–decoding model to classify the informants' meanings into three reception positions, namely the dominant-hegemonic position, the negotiated position, and the oppositional position. The results show that audience reception of children's mental health issues is diverse. Differences in meaning are influenced by family background, personal experience, education level, and the social and cultural conditions of the informants. These findings confirm that the audience plays an active role in interpreting media messages, so that the meaning received is not always in line with the message constructed by the filmmaker.

Abstract

Adapting a horror podcast into a feature film raises issues related to differences in audience interpretation of media messages, particularly in the representation of the theme of blind love shown in horror films. The differences in characteristics between audio and visuals have the potential to produce diverse interpretations, so audience interpretation requires further study. This study aims to analyze audience interpretation of the representation of blind love in the film Do You See What I See: “First Love” (2024), adapted from a horror podcast of the same title. The focus of the research is directed at the audience's position in the message decoding process based on media communication theory. This study uses a qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's reception analysis method through the encoding-decoding framework. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with three informants who are both podcast listeners and film viewers, supported by participant observation and documentation. Data analysis techniques used thematic analysis to group audience interpretations into dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional categories, and strengthened by triangulation of sources and techniques. The results show that audiences interpret blind love as a form of emotional attachment that blocks rationality and has the potential to cause negative impacts. One informant held a dominant-hegemonic position, accepting the film's moral message in its entirety, while two informants held a negotiated position, negotiating meaning based on their aesthetic experience, professional background, and preference for the horror genre. These findings indicate that audiences actively interpret media messages and that meaning is not accepted in isolation but rather is shaped through a process of negotiation based on the audience's social background and experiences.

Abstract

The rapid, interactive, and wide-reaching development of online media has increased organizational reputational vulnerability, particularly for strategic state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In 2024, PT Dirgantara Indonesia experienced a reputational crisis following online media coverage regarding delays in salary and employee allowance payments, which initially constituted an internal administrative issue but subsequently evolved into a national public agenda through media framing that emphasized labor conflict and employee perspectives, thereby shaping negative public perceptions before the company was able to deliver effective clarification. This study aims to analyze PT Dirgantara Indonesia’s digital crisis communication strategy in maintaining corporate image and reputation amid negative online media coverage by examining media framing, organizational digital communication responses, and issue management practices during the crisis period. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with internal corporate actors directly involved in crisis communication, analysis of national online media coverage, and documentation of the company’s digital communication outputs. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing through iterative thematic coding. The findings indicate that online media framing played a dominant role in shaping public perceptions from the early phase of the crisis. The company’s digital communication strategy, characterized by a formal, centralized, and reactive approach, was effective in maintaining information accuracy but less optimal in proactively constructing public narratives. Bureaucratic issue management processes delayed public responses and reinforced media framing dominance, underscoring the importance of rapid, proactive, and dialogic digital communication strategies in managing SOE reputational crises in the digital media era.

Abstract

This research examines Malay symbolism within the Tanjak, focusing specifically on its structural models and color variations. The study employs Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic framework, utilizing his triadic model of meaning consisting of the sign, object, and interpretant. The primary objective is to decipher the symbolic significance of the Tanjak’s design elements through this semiotic lens. This study uses a qualitative approach of content analysis of Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic model. The results of the analysis show that Tanjak symbolizes the identity and the originality of the wearer. That by seeing someone using a certain Tanjak, we can identify his place of origin, his position in society, and his lineage he came from. Also, the intentions and purpose of his visit to an event. Therefore, the use of Tanjak by individuals who are given as symbols that will be imposed on guests who come from within the country and abroad should pay attention to the model, color and the person who uses the Tanjak. For them to be more wise, careful and respectful toward the cultural heritage so that it is accordance with its designation. The results of this research analysis consist of two parts, First: there are four tanjak models, Elang Menyongsong Angin with meaning wisdom and precision, Dendam Tak Sudah with meaning affectioan, Tebing Runtuh with meaning leadership  and Pial Ayam with meaning courage. Second; tanjak color variations, Tanjak Elang Menyongong Angin in black and silver, Tanjak Dendam Tak Sudah in yellow, Tabjak Tebing Runtuh in black and golden yellow, Tanjak Pial Ayam in green and golden yellow
