Abstract

This article examines the exegetical hybridity in the book Tafsīr Marāḥ Labīd, a Qur’anic commentary authored by the nineteenth-century Javanese scholar Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani. By highlighting the marginalization of Southeast Asian voices in mainstream tafsīr studies, the research demonstrates how Nawawi creatively integrated classical Islamic scholarship from Ottoman-Ḥijāz networks with local Bantenese agrarian ethics. Through textual-historical criticism, comparative hermeneutics, and digital ethnography, the study reveals Nawawi’s systematic method: employing variant recitations (qirāʾāt) to produce context-sensitive legal rulings, filtering non-essential narratives (Isrāʾīliyyāt) to prioritize ethical lessons, and applying maqāṣid pragmatism to address both colonial and social injustices. This hybrid approach transformed Qur’anic exegesis into subtle resistance against Dutch land exploitation while simultaneously promoting communal welfare. Today, Marāḥ Labīd remains a living tradition within Indonesian pesantren, relevant to contemporary issues ranging from environmental stewardship and gender-inclusive ethics to social moderation and pandemic responses. The article underscores Nawawi’s legacy as a decolonial model, demonstrating that Nusantara scholarship has actively and sustainably shaped Islamic intellectual and social landscapes through adaptive fidelity to classical orthodoxy while enabling innovation in modern contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of digital jihad from a Qur’anic perspective as a normative, ethical, and strategic response to the complex challenges of cyberspace in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The research is motivated by the growing integration of digital technology in religious life, alongside the proliferation of disinformation, algorithmic manipulation, and AI-enabled simulations of religious authority. Employing a thematic interpretation approach (tafsīr mawḍū’ī), the study analyzes Qur’anic verses, particularly QS. al-Hajj [22]:78 and QS. al-Furqan [25]:52, which emphasize nonviolent jihad rooted in knowledge (‘ilm), argumentation (ḥujjah), and Qur’anic ethics. The findings indicate that digital jihad is a multidimensional effort encompassing educative da’wah, resistance to digital radicalism, counter-narratives against extremism, and the ethical deployment of AI. It also entails proactive engagement in fostering a digital Islamic civilization grounded in moderation (wasatiyyah), truth verification (tabayyun), and moral responsibility. The primary contribution of this study lies in conceptualizing digital jihad as a transformative, adaptive tool for da’wah that enables Muslims to ethically navigate and shape digital spaces within a value-based framework. This research thus expands the discourse on jihad beyond militaristic interpretations, offering a contemporary Qur’anic paradigm that is both intellectually rigorous and practically relevant to today’s socio-technological realities

Abstract

The interpretation of legal verses in the Qur’an has traditionally emphasized qirāʾāt mutawātirah, often overlooking qirāʾāt shādhah, which hold significant interpretive potential that has not been fully utilized in Islamic legal exegesis. This article examines Abū Ḥayyān al-Gharnāṭī’s interpretation of QS al-Nisāʾ [4]:1 through the analytical framework of qirāʾāt shādhah as the primary instrument of study. The research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology, using tafsīr al-Baḥr al-Muḥīṭ as the principal source, supplemented by critical engagement with other classical tafsīr works for contextualization. Findings indicate that Abū Ḥayyān critically rejects the traditional narrative of Ḥawwāʾ’s creation from Ādam’s rib, and by referencing qirāʾāt shādhah, he affirms the ontological equality of men and women, both created from the same substance. Furthermore, the verse is interpreted as an ethical directive to maintain familial relationships and social cohesion, integrating theological, linguistic, and moral dimensions. This study demonstrates how the diversity of qirāʾāt can enrich legal exegesis, offering inclusive and progressive perspectives, while creating space for alternative readings that support gender-equitable and contextually grounded understandings of Islamic law. It contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic legal hermeneutics and highlights the importance of integrating neglected recitations to advance ethical, gender-conscious, and contextually relevant interpretations

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of the ḍamīr huwa in the isyārī interpretation of Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, focusing on the dimension of tawḥīd and its relevance to contemporary spiritual discourse. Employing a qualitative, textual analysis approach, this study analyzes the works of Sufi mufassirs such as Ibn ʿAjībah, Imām al-Ālūsī, and Muḥammad al-Bayṭār. It also addresses the polemic between the Majelis Pengkajian Tauhid Tasawuf Indonesia (MPTT-I) and the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) concerning the interpretation of ḍamīr huwa in Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ. The findings indicated that huwa is not merely a pronoun referring to Allah but also a symbol of the highest level of spiritual consciousness. Within the context of modern spirituality, this understanding resonates with the concept of mindfulness, wherein awareness of God’s presence becomes a source of inner tranquility. Furthermore, this interpretation may foster tolerance, as it emphasizes that God transcends the boundaries of religious formalism. In the context of exegetical polemics, MPTT-I understands huwa as an implicit (ghaybī) pronoun associated with the concept of al-Insān al-Kāmil and referring to the Prophet Muḥammad. In contrast, MUI asserts that huwa must be unequivocally referred to Allah. This study underscores the importance of adopting a moderate approach to isyārī interpretation to enrich spiritual understanding and prevent theological conflict. Further research is recommended to explore more deeply the roots of this polemic and the epistemological limitations of isyārī exegesis in contemporary Islamic discourse.

Abstract

Ngaji Keadilan Gender Islam (KGI) is a discussion forum initiated by Nur Rofiah in response to the lack of accessible Qur’anic interpretations that promote gender justice. This article aims to analyze how Ngaji KGI represents the practice of living Qur’an within Islamic feminist discourse and contributes to the dynamics of gender justice in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach with the type of field research and data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings show that Ngaji KGI actively constructs Qur’ānic interpretations that prioritize women’s lived experiences based on the principle of women's haqiqi (real) justice. The forum not only shifts perceptions of women’s roles but also utilizes digital platforms to disseminate its values. Ngaji KGI strives to ground and bring to life the values of the Qur’an related to Islamic gender justice through contextual and participatory interpretation in social reality. These findings enrich the discourse of contemporary Islamic feminism and demonstrate the importance of the role of the community in developing gender-just interpretations.

Abstract

The problem of social inequality reflects inequality in power relations, distribution of resources, and ideological legitimacy, which are often wrapped in religious narratives. In fact, the Qur'an contains fundamental values such as justice, solidarity, equality, and defense of the oppressed (mustaḍ‘afīn). This article aims to re-examine in depth the approach of social interpretation of the Qur'an in responding to issues of socioeconomic inequality and to reveal the role of the Qur'an in defending social inequality. The research includes a literature study with a critical hermeneutic approach in reading social verses in interpretations that are in accordance with the characteristics of interpretation. The primary source refers to verses of the Qur'an relating to the principle of economic justice, and some other related literature as secondary sources. This article argues that the social verses of the Qur’an are grounded in the principles of justice (al-‘adl), compassion (raḥmah), and egalitarianism (musāwah). These spirits are in line with social interpretation based on a critical hermeneutical framework that connects the text, context, and social reality. The findings reveal that social exegesis not only interprets the text normatively but also presents it as a tool for social criticism against entrenched structures of injustice. This exegesis promotes the formation of transformative ethics that favour marginalised groups. This research opens up a space for dialogue between religious texts and the practice of social justice in the context of contemporary Muslim society, and expands the horizon of exegesis as a tool for social change.

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic concept of iṭ‘ām al-ṭa‘ām as a normative and operational ethic for social policy, analyzing its relevance to Indonesia’s national Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program launched in 2025. Responding to persistent challenges in child nutrition and food security, exemplified by 21.5% stunting prevalence in SSGI 2023, the study addresses structural inequalities in access to nutrition highlighted by the Global Nutrition Report 2024. Employing a thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī), the research integrates lexical–semantic analyses of feeding-related verses, Makkiyah–Madaniyah contextualization, and classical and modern exegetical insights, operationalized via maqāṣid al-sharīʿah and the Capability Approach. Findings reveal that Qur’anic discourses on iṭ‘ām al-ṭa‘ām articulate not only distributive justice and protection of vulnerable populations but also the mechanisms through which institutional design, governance, and community practices shape the realization of human capabilities. This framework allows a critical assessment of MBG’s transformative impact beyond logistical delivery, providing evidence-based guidance for ethically coherent and socially effective nutrition policies. The study contributes methodologically by advancing an Applied Social Exegesis model that bridges Qur’anic ethics with contemporary policy evaluation.

Abstract

This study examines the reception and praxis of Qur’anic eco-theological values within the cultural life of the Muslim community of Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, through a living Qur’an approach combined with Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory. It investigates how Qur’anic concepts such as tawḥīd, khilāfah, amānah, and ecological balance are received, interpreted, and internalized through local wisdom, including the philosophy of Maja Labo Dahu, the ethical principle Ngaha Aina Ngoho, and cultural practices such as Rimpu and Peta Kapanca. Using qualitative methods comprising literature review, cultural observation, and contextual tafsīr analysis, the study finds that these traditions function as concrete modes of cultural reception that translate Qur’anic eco-theological values into everyday ethical practices, particularly in fostering environmental responsibility and social restraint. However, the analysis also reveals interpretive limits and contextual constraints, where specific ecological meanings are selectively emphasized while others remain implicit or symbolic. Theoretically, this study contributes to living Qur’an scholarship by demonstrating how reception theory can be employed to map the horizon of expectation through which Qur’anic meanings are culturally negotiated. Empirically, it highlights local wisdom as both a medium and a boundary for the internalization of Islamic ecological ethics in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

Abstract

Within the context of Islamic education, Surah al-Fātiḥah holds potential as a foundation for holistic pedagogy that integrates spiritual, moral, and intellectual dimensions. Nevertheless, empirical research systematically examining the application of Qur’anic Edu-Theology principles in modern educational practices remains limited, creating a gap between normative Qur’anic frameworks and contemporary pedagogical implementation. This study employs a qualitative approach by combining taḥlīlī exegesis for key-term analysis with mawḍū‘ī exegesis for thematic understanding of Surah al-Fātiḥah, integrated with modern educational theories such as compassion-based pedagogy, character education, and behaviorism. The study highlights six core principles of Qur’anic Edu-Theology: (1) divine compassion, (2) inclusivity, (3) justice and moral accountability, (4) loyalty and exemplary conduct, (5) consistency and perseverance, and (6) learning from exemplary models while avoiding misguidance, which can serve as practical guidelines in modern education. The findings indicate that these principles can form a pedagogical framework that is humanistic, transformative, and value-oriented, while simultaneously necessitating adaptive strategies to address normative challenges, including technology integration, student-centered approaches, and project-based learning. The primary contribution of this study is the introduction of the Qur’anic Edu-Theology concept as a paradigm for holistic education relevant to the modern context, while also providing a conceptual foundation for further research to explore other surahs and empirically test their effectiveness in educational practice

Abstract

This study examines Muḥammad Saʿīd al-ʿAshmāwī’s conceptual approach to interpreting Qur’anic verses concerning homosexuality, emphasizing the distinction between al-fikr al-ṣāfī (pure ideas) and al-fikr al-dīnī (religious thought). Al-ʿAshmāwī asserts that pure ideas are transcendent and objective, whereas religious thought constitutes human interpretation influenced by social, historical, and cultural contexts. The study aims to explore how this framework enables exegesis that preserves normative principles while remaining responsive to contemporary social, ethical, and legal dynamics. Employing a qualitative methodology through literature review, the analysis is both thematic-categorical and epistemological, examining relevant Qur’anic verses and al-ʿAshmāwī’s works. Findings indicate that his approach foregrounds the moral, ethical, and social essence of revelation, treating legal prescriptions as contextually constructed by humans. By integrating classical and modern hermeneutics with local and global perspectives, this method ensures interpretations remain relevant to issues of justice, human dignity, and contemporary social dynamics. The study contributes to the development of a transformative exegetical framework that bridges transcendent principles and human interpretive needs in a humanistic, critical, and practical manner, offering a methodological foundation for contemporary Qur’anic studies.
