Abstract

Anime serves as a powerful medium that can depict natural phenomena in a visually engaging manner. This study explores the depiction of meteorological processes in the anime Naruto Shippuden, particularly through the technique Kirin used by Sasuke Uchiha. The analysis focuses on how the anime portrays storm cloud formation, condensation, cyclonic winds, and lightning, comparing these representations with real-world atmospheric and meteorological principles. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research draws from visual scenes and scientific literature to evaluate the accuracy of the weather-related processes depicted. The findings reveal that while the anime takes creative liberties for dramatic effect, the underlying concepts reflect a basic understanding of weather modification and storm formation. This study aims to bridge scientific literacy and popular culture by showing how fiction can inspire interest in meteorological science.

Abstract

This study explores audience experiences in interpreting the film Petualangan Sherina 2 through a phenomenological approach. The research is motivated by the return of Petualangan Sherina after 23 years since its original release in 2000, which marked a pivotal moment in the resurgence of the Indonesian film industry. The study focuses on a group of viewers who had watched the first film during their childhood and have now watched its sequel as adults, particularly those aged between 32 and 38 years. Through in-depth interviews with 10 participants who met these criteria, the study finds that Petualangan Sherina 2 not only evokes nostalgia and childhood memories but also serves as a medium for self-reflection and the reinterpretation of life experiences. Viewers experience strong episodic and associative memories, as elements of the film—such as characters, music, and narrative—trigger recollections and emotions associated with their past. Furthermore, the film functions as an intergenerational bridge, as many first-generation viewers brought their children to watch the film, creating a new shared cultural experience. Employing a phenomenological approach, this study highlights how popular art can act as a catalyst for self-reflection, identity continuity, and the strengthening of emotional ties between individuals and their past experiences. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the fields of film studies, psychology, and cultural communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

As forests are considered the earth’s lungs and are a source of habitat and life for various biodiversity, deforestation by humans which threatens the survival of forests has become an urgent worldwide environmental issue. Hence, the United Nations designed SDG 15: Life on Land where countries were urged to collaborate to protect and restore forests, encourage the use of land ecosystems through sustainable forest management, fight desertification, stop and reverse land degradation, and stop the loss of biodiversity. One form of implementation is through social criticism with films. Hayao Miyazaki, a founder of the Ghibli animation studio, is famous for making films that highlight environmental themes and the importance of maintaining balance between humans and nature. Thus, the characters in Ghibli's films are known to be pro-nature and try to protect it from destruction, like San from 'Princess Mononoke' and Nausicaa from 'Nausicaa: The Valley of The Wind'. San and Nausicaa each fight to save the ecosystem around them from humans' destructiveness. However, they show different attitudes when achieving their goals. Using qualitative methods of literary psychology, it was found that San preferred to fight alone with violence because she was raised with minimal understanding of empathy and acceptance. Meanwhile, Nausicaa, who grew up full of compassion and peace, was more open to the help of others and fought diplomatically. Both ways of fighting are not wrong, have their pros and cons, and are embedded in the personality and life journey of each character.

Abstract

The film, in addition to containing elements of entertainment, also encompasses aspects such as education for the audience. Films often portray stories that reflect real-life societal experiences. They also include both verbal and non-verbal communication elements related to body shaming. Films are typically enjoyed not only as entertainment but also as sources of life lessons. Through this, viewers can understand the communication that occurs within those two aspects. In the film True Beauty, the method used in this study is qualitative. This research applies a descriptive approach to explain the events presented. The author explores incidents related to body shaming depicted in True Beauty, along with the potential mental health risks it causes, such as: developing insecurity, social withdrawal, hindrance to self-development, engaging in extreme measures to alter one’s physical appearance, and even committing self-harm or suicide. Society often equates beauty with physical appearance; however, this drama presents a contrast between outer beauty and inner beauty. Recognizing and being grateful for both the strengths and weaknesses of oneself and others is one of the most valuable lessons that can be learned from this film.
