Abstract

Although centered on its female audiences, soap operas have long served to legitimize the practice of traditional gender roles. In Joy (2015), soap opera is depicted as one of the medias that construct traditional gender roles while also offering different responses from the characters. This study aims to examine how audience reception influences the meanings constructed by media. By utilizing Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding theory, it analyzes two reading positions represented by the characters Joy and Terry. Terry embodies the dominant reading position by accepting the traditional values, whereas Joy embodies the oppositional reading by rejecting traditional gender roles. The findings suggest that media is not an entirely hegemonic force, as oppositional readers—such as the one presented by Joy—do exist. Ultimately, audiences possess the power to interpret media messages.

Abstract

This study scientifically explores the elements of visual and auditory framing through the theoretical perspectives of David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. The objective of this research is to uncover the processes involved in the formation of symbols and meanings in the art of film. To achieve this, a qualitative research approach is employed, utilizing a literature study model. Data is gathered from scholarly journal articles and books that discuss the ideas of Bordwell, Thompson, and Barthes, as well as topics related to visual and auditory framing in film art and semiotic analysis in cinema. All collected data is analyzed and structured through the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes, serving as a methodological framework for understanding the formation of symbols and meanings within a film work. The study finds that through visual and auditory framing—such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, sound effects, and film scoring—a text is constructed and presented to the audience. Through semiotic analysis, this text is deconstructed using the theories of connotation, denotation, myth, signifier, and signified, resulting in the emergence of symbolic forms. These symbols are then interpreted by viewers based on their individual life experiences, leading to the creation of meaning. This process fosters a new awareness that can serve as a foundational reference or guideline for both film studies and film production.
Artistic Design as a Sign System: A Semiotic Study of Roland Barthes in the Film “Sinners (2025)”

Abstract

This study analyzes the artistic design in the film Sinners (2025) using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to uncover the meanings behind its visual elements. The primary focus is directed toward props and symbols such as the guitar, cutting wounds, and the cross, which function not merely as aesthetic complements but also as sign systems conveying profound messages related to identity, trauma, and ideology. Through the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth analysis, this study finds that the artistic design in the film represents complex social and cultural narratives, such as inherited sin, collective suffering, and the characters’ existential struggles. These symbols construct discourses on morality, religiosity, and internal conflict, positioning the artistic design as a medium of ideological expression that reinforces the film’s overall narrative meaning.
An Analysis of Consumerism and Populism in the Film Air (2023)

Abstract

The film Air (2023), directed by Ben Affleck, depicts the negotiations between Nike and basketball star Michael Jordan in creating the Air Jordan shoe line. This study analyzes how the film represents and reproduces capitalist ideologies through narrative and symbolic visualization of products. Employing a qualitative approach and media text analysis, the research utilizes Karl Marx's theory of commodity fetishism and John Storey's theory of popular culture to dissect the relationship between products, consumerism, and identity. The analysis reveals that Air not only documents the historical process of creating a cultural icon but also asserts the media's role in creating symbolic meanings of products as forms of lifestyle and social status. Through product personification, celebrity cultism, and the alignment of individual values with commodities, the film serves as a concrete example of how capitalism operates through cultural representation.

Abstract

The animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), directed by Wes Anderson, tells the story of a heist carried out by Mr. Fox and his friend Kylie. The main focus of this study is the unfulfilled hierarchy of needs experienced by a character in Fantastic Mr. Fox. In the film, Ash feels humiliated because of his behavior, talent, and appearance. This study aims to identify how the character Ash fulfills his need for love and belonging. The research applies intrinsic elements such as character and characterization, plot, setting, and conflict, as well as the extrinsic element of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This is a qualitative study using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings show that Ash’s problems are caused by his family, his surrounding environment, and feelings of jealousy. As a result, Ash attempts to overcome these issues by showing his talents and changing his bad habits.
