Abstract

Steven Spielberg's film Munich (2005) presents a narrative that departs from the tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics and Mossad's retaliatory response against the group deemed responsible. The representation of violence in this film has sparked widespread debate in the realm of literary and political criticism, particularly regarding the ethics of revenge, state legitimacy, and the impact of individual and collective trauma. This study aims to analyze how violence and revenge are represented through the storyline, characterization, and cinematic symbolism, while also examining the ethical dimensions debated in public and academic discourse. The research method used is a qualitative study based on a literature review with an interdisciplinary approach, namely literary narrative theory, the ethics of violence representation, and cultural political analysis. Data was obtained from academic journals, film reviews, and literature related to the representation of violence in cinema. The results of the study show that Spielberg refuses to give absolute legitimacy to state violence or individual revenge, but rather opens up a space of moral ambiguity that challenges the audience to reflect. The narrative of revenge in Munich is depicted as an endless cycle that traps perpetrators, victims, and nations in repeated trauma. Finally, Munich serves as a reminder that revenge, no matter how strong the political or emotional motivations behind it, is never free from ethical consequences.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of keroncong music as an auditory narrative element that shapes cinematic meaning in Indonesian contemporary film. Music in film functions not merely as an emotional backdrop but also as a bearer of meaning, symbolism, and cultural identity. The focus of this analysis is a scene from “Losmen Bu Broto: The Series” (Episode 3, minute 27:15), which features keroncong music both diegetically and non-diegetically. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study examines how the musical structure of keroncong, its rhythm, harmony, timbre, and nostalgic nuance interacts with the film’s visual and narrative elements. The findings show that keroncong serves as a temporal and emotional marker that strengthens characterization and conveys cultural depth within Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of lexical hedges in the main character’s utterances in the film Eighth Grade (2018). This is shown by the frequent uses of lexical hedges by the main character, who has social anxiety and an introverted personality. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types and functions of lexical hedges used by the main character in the film. This study applies Namsaraev’s (2010) theory to analyze the types of lexical hedges and Coates’ (2013) theory to identify their functions. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that there are 42 data that can be categorized into four types of lexical hedges, which are modal auxiliary verbs, lexical verbs, adverbs, and fillers. Among these, fillers are the most frequently used type by the main character. In addition, the main character uses hedges to express uncertainty and to search for the right words. Based on the analysis, the most dominant function of hedges is to search for the right words. This study concludes that the use of lexical hedges can be influenced by an individual’s social identity.

Abstract

Bae Bae is a song by Big Bang in the Rap and Beat genre which was released on May 1, 2015. The music video raises the theme of sensuality and explores the relationship between love, desire, and vulnerability. The delivery of the concept in the music video is carried out with a detailed approach related to the visual and narrative elements, namely the mise en scene approach. Bordwell stated that mise en scene consists of four components, namely the setting, costume and make-up, lighting, and staging. Mise en scene not only functions to build the aesthetics of the film, but also plays a crucial role in shaping the gender narrative shown in an audiovisual work. One of the gender narratives is the male gaze theory by Laura Mulvey. Mulvey states that the male gaze is a sexual imbalance, in the form of a perspective in the media divided into the view of men as active and women as passive. The phenomenon of the male gaze is the condition of women being depicted with erotic influence so that they conform to what men want. The phenomenon of men as active parties and exploiting women as passive parties to satisfy sexual fantasies seen in the music video Bae Bae by Big Bang will be the focus of this research. In this analysis, the researcher will highlight how the male gaze is displayed explicitly and implicitly in the music video by using the mise en scène approach as a tool to understand and explore the existing visual elements.

Abstract

Adaptation is a common phenomenon in the world of cinematography, and one of the most frequently used sources for adaptation is historical novels. As one of the classic Chinese novels, Romance of the Three Kingdoms has been adapted into various media, such as theater performances, films, and television series. Across these adaptations, different portrayals can always be found—whether in terms of narrative, history, or culture. As a result, the reception of each adaptation varies. This study aims to examine how the novel is portrayed in its 1994 adaptation. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach is used, paired with the theory of ekranisasi (film adaptation theory), to identify the types of modifications that occur. The results show that although many modifications are present, these changes are made carefully without compromising the essence of the original novel.
