Abstract

This study examines the student’s perceptions of applying a learning management system (LMS) in learning writing at the university level. This research aimed to examine the students’ perceptions about the usefulness of Canvas LMS in learning writing at the university level and to discover the students’ perceptions of applying Canvas LMS on their motivation in learning writing. The population of this research was the 32 students of English department Galuh University. The present study implemented a qualitative design in which a survey study and the data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. In analyzing the questionnaire the researcher used google form by displaying it into the figure and data interpretation based on the answer from a close-ended questionnaire, while the data from the interview was analyzed by displaying data interpretation from the interviewees. The result of the research showed the students had negative perceptions, in particular he troubles faced by the students. Some students felt not interested in applying Canvas LMS because it often had low motivation, trouble such as time, internet signal, system error, and so on. Keywords: Students’ perceptions, Canvas, LMS, Learning writing

Abstract

This research explores teaching media “Powtoon” to assist students’ writing narrative text. This research aims to investigate strategies used by the teacher in using media “Powtoon” to assist students’ writing narrative text and to know how the students perceive about the use of media “Powtoon”. It was argued that the use of media “Powtoon” would provide students with powerful tool to use in the classroom. Bowman (2013) arguess that “Powtoon offers teachers more creativity and flexibility in students instruction to help introduce, develop, and reinforce key education concept”. So, this strategy is appropriate for the teacher to invite students’ motivation and participation in learning English especially in assessing writing skill. A qualitative descriptive research was used in this research, and thisresearch was conducted at the tenth grade of Vocational School in Karawang, and took an English teacher who teaches writing class and 18 students as samples which were chosen purposively as the sample of the study. The data were collected by using classroom observation, and interview. The result from this study showed a positive perception through strategies which were used by the teacher and help the students in improving their self confidence in practicing writing. Beside that, the students’ spelling, grammar, content andvocabulary improved because the students feel free in conveying and expressing their idea and some sentences in writing the script of the story helped them in arranging the sentences to make a good sentences. Therefore, the researcher analyzed the students’ interview. Thedata were displayed in four questions.The dominant answer of the students’ interview indicates that they enjoyed and motivated in following teacher’s instruction in every stages of learning process.Keywords: Writing, Narrative Text, Powtoon

Abstract

This paper reports on the role of peer group discussion activity towards students' speaking anxiety. This research aimed to discover find out factors affecting students’ speaking anxiety, the students’ ways to overcome their speaking anxiety, and the students’ perceptions of the role of peer group discussion activity toward students’ speaking anxiety. This research employed qualitative design in which a case study and the data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The participant of this research was the 31 junior students of English Department Galuh University. The researcher used a close-ended questionnaire and it consists of ten statements. The data from the questionnaire analyzed by using close items on the questionnaire and the percentage computation, while the researcher used a semi-structured interview to obtain the data of the research. Furthermore, the researcher conducted a telephone interview and the data from the interview was analyzed by displaying data interpretation from the interviewees. The researcher found that students have two factors that influence their speaking anxiety, namely linguistic factors, and non-linguistic factors. Furthermore, students have two strategies to overcome their speaking anxiety namely preparation and getting help from their friends. Then, students perceive that peer group discussion activity was very helpful to overcome their speaking anxiety and improve their speaking skills because students can be more confident and comfortable talking about with their friends. They can help each other to share opinions, make conversations, and motivate them to be more confident. Students also perceive that peer group discussions can help them to improve their speaking skills because they can talk more confidently and they can help one another, correct when making mistakes, and share information about what is not understood.Keywords: peer group, group discussion, speaking, anxiety.

Abstract

This research discusses about using Hypnoteaching technique to empower students’ courage in speaking skill. This research gives enlightenment to help empowering students speaking skill through Hypnoteaching technique. The objective of this study was aimed to figure out how Hypnoteaching technique empower students’ courage in speaking skill, and what are the students and teacher’s perceptions towards Hypnoteaching technique. The present study used qualitative Case study design. Twenty-eight students from eleventh grade and an English teacher were participated in this study. The data were obtained through observation to observe how teacher implemented Hypnoteaching as a technique in teaching speaking, questionnaire and interview to collect data about students and teacher’s perceptions towards Hypnoteaching technique. To analyze the observation data and interview, the researcher first transcribed and then made interpretation from it. The questionnaire data was analyzed using Likert Scale measurement. The findings revealed that the teacher implement Hypnoteaching in teaching speaking, and she also uses constructivism learning model in teaching activity. In addition, Hypnoteaching technique can make them more motivated and courageous in speaking English. Based on the findings, the researcher suggested in any case of their subject, teachers should implement an effective, easy and enjoyable technique especially Hypnoteaching in their teaching activity, not only to motivate the students but also to empower their courage and knowledge particulary in speaking class.Keywords: Hypnoteaching, Technique, Speaking.

Abstract

AbstractThis article is reported on the teacher uses steller as an instructional media in teaching writing narrative text. It also investigated the teacher’s perception towards steller application in teaching writing narrative text and the students’ perceptions toward steller application in writing narrative text. Steller is a free storytelling apps which lets the users to create story with combining text, images or video. In conducting this research the researchers used qualitative research in which case study was employed to collect the data from participants. The participants in this research were an English teacher and thirty six of tenth grade students at SMAN 1 Pangandaran. This research used triangulation data techniques such as observation, interview and questionnaire. The result of study shows there are several steps in teaching writing narrative text by using steller in the class. Moreover, the teacher and students gave positive perceptions toward steller application in teaching and writing narrative text. Finally, the researchers are recommended the future researcher to conduct the research with similar topic but using another kind of instructional media.Keywords: Instructional Media, Teaching Media, Digital Story, Steller, Narrative text

Abstract

The present study is aimed at finding out whether or not teacher’s feedback through Instagram improve on the students’ writing recount text and to investigate the students’ perceptions on teacher’s feedback through Instagram in teaching writing recount text. The present study implemented a mixed-method with the type of true-experimental pre-test post-test control group design for the quantitative data and descriptive analysis for the qualitative data. The sample of the present study involved 24 students as the experimental and control group. Students’ document tests were used to obtain the data. Based on the statistical result, after teacher’s feedback through Instagram was implemented on students’ writing recount text especially personal recount text, the t-observed value was higher than t-table value; thereby, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (H1) was accepted. Thus, teacher’s feedback through Instagram is seen to be the whole activities of writing personal recount text are well improved. In addition, from the analysis content of students’ document test indicated significant progress in writing recount text. The students’ perception on teacher’s feedback through Instagram in teaching writing of recount text that the students think they always pay attention to the errors identified by the teacher on their writing and try to fix all of them.  Based on the findings, it is recommended for English teachers to apply technology such Instagram and teacher’s feedback trough Instagram, especially in teaching writing so that the students' writing can be improved.Keywords: Teacher writing feedback, Instagram, Vocational HighSchool, writing, and recount text.

Abstract

This study is about Meaning negotiation that aims at investigating the type and strategies of meaning negotiation from Lectures and Seniors in English Online Classes during pandemic covid-19. Meaning negotiation show the students how to get the interaction with communication in conversation and the lectures strategies to have a good interaction with students. The aims of this research is to find out the type and strategies of meaning negotiation from lectures and students in Galuh University and reason the writer have this research is the writer want to students more confident and brave to speak up, ask and have an interaction and the lecture have a strategies to make a good interaction with the students. A qualitative design in which case study was employed in this study. The participants is the seniors and lectures from English Education Departmen Program and the data were collected by interviews use Google form and audio as the instruments. The results of the data is The Seniors of English Education Department Program use three from five categories signal of meaning negotiation focused by the writer, it is clarification check, confirmation check and repetition and the strategies of a humors related to the material with give the students example of English function and English expression before them speak up is the strategy of Lecture to have a meaning negotiation in English Online classes. This reseach concludes that meaning negitiation is important for the academic people to have a good communication.Keyword : Meaning negotiation
