Abstract

This study examines Tafsir At-Tanwir, the official Qur'anic commentary of Muhammadiyah, as a form of interpretation grounded in the contemporary social realities of Indonesia. Using a descriptive-critical approach with thematic categorization, the research reveals that its anti-corruption discourse is constructed through three main perspectives: as a deviation from the principle of tawhid (divine unity), as a failure to integrate worship with social ethics, and as a consequence of neglecting Islamic values in leadership and wealth management. The analysis demonstrates that rather than adopting a neutral stance, the commentary explicitly positions itself as part of Muhammadiyah's ideological da'wah strategy to realize an ideal Islamic society. Thus, Tafsir At-Tanwir is not merely an explanatory text of sacred verses but also a powerful tool for social transformation.

Abstract

This study discusses a reconsideration of the type of Sufi interpretation undertaken by the Sheikh of philosophical Sufism, Hamza al-Fansuri, of Aceh Darussalam (1496-1903 CE). He is considered one of the most prominent figures in philosophical Sufism in Southeast Asia who has authored numerous works on Sufi teachings. The researcher uses an inductive approach through a content analysis of Hamza al-Fansuri's three main books: Asrār al-'Arifin, Syarāb al-'Aṣyiqīn, and al-Muntahī. The researcher finds that Hamza al-Fansuri cited several Quranic verses as evidence; forty-five verses in Asrār al-'Arifin, some of which are repeated in his other two books. Thus, the total number of Quranic verses in the three books is fifty-six. The researcher concludes that Hamza al-Fansuri, despite his fame for philosophical Sufism, his approach to interpreting Quranic verses tends toward both allusions (isyari) Sufi interpretation and theoretical (nadhari) Sufi interpretation. He always combines Sharia and truth, and recognizes the apparent (zahir) meaning alongside the hidden (batin) meaning.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness or the absence of fathers in children's lives is increasing due to social and cultural changes, having a significant impact on children's moral, psychological and social development. In this context, Surah Luqman verses 12-19, as interpreted by Ahmad Mustafa Al-Maraghi, provides moral and spiritual guidance that can help children face this challenge. This study aims to analyze how the moral values in Surah Luqman can be applied to overcome the impact of fatherlessness on children. Using the literature review method and descriptive-analytical analysis, this research explores the meaning of the verses and relates them to the problem of fatherlessness faced by children in modern life. The results show that the values in Surah Luqman verses 12-19 are very relevant in shaping the personality of children who grow up without a father figure. These values include gratitude to Allah (Verse 12), strengthening monotheism (Verse 13), respecting mothers (Verse 14), prioritizing parents (Verse 15), awareness of the consequences of actions (Verse 16), discipline in prayer (Verse 17), and humility and patience (Verses 18-19). These values can help children deal with the psychological, social, and emotional challenges of fatherlessness, while building a strong moral foundation in their lives. This research recommends the development of a Qur'anic values-based education module to be implemented in families, schools and communities, as well as an empirical study to test its effectiveness in the lives of children who experience fatherlessness.

Abstract

This article examines the Quranic foundations of Maqasid Shariah and their relevance to the design of Islamic-compliant hotel services in Malaysia. In response to the growing demand for Shariah-compliant hospitality among Muslim travelers, there is an urgent need for service models that integrate religious principles with customer expectations. The study employs a qualitative thematic analysis of selected Quranic verses that represent the five essential objectives of Maqasid Shariah: the preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. These objectives are explored in relation to their operational implications within hotel services such as cleanliness, privacy, ethical marketing, worship facilities, and food preparation. The findings demonstrate that Quranic guidance provides a holistic ethical framework capable of shaping spiritually meaningful and sustainable hotel management models. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers, hoteliers, and Shariah scholars seeking to harmonize spiritual authenticity with contemporary hospitality practices in Malaysia.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the thoughts of contemporary Muslim scholars who offer a contextual approach to understanding the Qur'anic text and the theoretical relationship of each of these figures' thoughts and their application in Q.S. al-Maidah: 38. Some of the statistics discussed in this study include: Fazlur Rahman, Abdullah Saeed, Khaled Aboe El-Fadl, and M. Amin Abdullah. The selection of these four figures was based on the strength of their thinking in understanding the contextual nature of the Qur'an and their influence on other contemporary Muslim scholars, both in Indonesian Islamic universities and in different countries. By formulating the thoughts of these four figures, a moderate contemporary interpretation of Islamic law will be formed, and laws that are relevant to the realities of the times will be formulated. This research uses a literature approach by reviewing literature journals and contemporary tafsir books. The primary data of this research are books and journals that are the thoughts of the four figures, especially those that discuss the hermeneutics of the Qur'an in the renewal of Islamic studies. This research concludes that the contemporary interpretations of the four figures have similarities in seeing the social realities that occur and their theories are interconnected with each other. Fazlur Rahman's double movement theory plays a role in seeing Khaled Aboe El-Fadl's theory's relationship between author, text, and reader. Abdullah Saeed's hierarchy of values theory plays a role in mapping the text. The three-element theory (text, reality, insight) of M. Amin Abdullah serves as a measure of a reader's insight in analyzing the text and connecting it with the reality that occurs. According to them, the punishment for cutting hands contained in Q.S. al-Maidah: 38 can be replaced with imprisonment or a heavy fine. This is because the punishment of cutting hands is no longer by the current social reality, considered inhumane, and contrary to humanity. This research remains theoretical in nature. Future studies may apply the proposed contextual framework to other Qur'anic themes, such as socio-legal or ethical issues, to test its broader applicability.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the value of mutual assistance (ta'awun) in the Qur'an and explore its relevance to the Sakai Sambayan tradition of the Lampung community. Employing a qualitative approach through library research, the study draws upon Qur'anic verses, both classical and contemporary exegeses, and anthropological literature on Lampung culture. The findings reveal a significant convergence between the universal Islamic principle of ta'awun and Sakai Sambayan as a form of local wisdom. Both emphasize solidarity, compassion, and communal togetherness, although they differ in origin: ta'awun is derived from divine revelation, while Sakai Sambayan is rooted in cultural tradition. The integration of these values offers substantial implications for strengthening social cohesion, developing character education grounded in spiritual and cultural values, and fostering religious moderation in the face of modern challenges such as globalization and individualism. Therefore, this study highlights that the synergy between Qur'anic teachings and local traditions can serve as strategic socio-religious capital for building a harmonious, caring, and empowered society within the broader framework of Indonesia's socio-religious development.

Abstract

While the Hajj pilgrimage has significant economic dimensions, these are often underexamined from a theological perspective. This study aims to delineate the economic benefits of the Hajj as an integral component of its divine design. Adopting a qualitative, library-based methodology, this research performs a thematic analysis of the exegesis (tafsīr) of key Quranic passages, primarily from Surah Āli 'Imrān, Surah Al-Baqarah, and Surah Al-Hajj, to construct a holistic economic framework. The findings reveal a consistent Quranic theme that integrates economic activity into the pilgrimage. This is presented in a three-phase model: (1) Pre-Hajj economic mobilization, divinely catalyzed by the principle of financial capability (istiṭā'ah); (2) During-Hajj commerce, explicitly sanctioned as seeking "bounty" and witnessing "benefits" (manāfi'); and (3) a Post-Hajj sustained global economic cycle, rooted in the Quranic vision of a worldwide gathering. The central argument is that these economic facets are not incidental but are foundational to the Hajj's divinely ordained purpose. This study contributes a robust theological framework that moves beyond the spiritual-versus-material debate, establishing the Hajj as an integrated spiritual-economic institution that requires a holistic understanding.

Abstract

In general, Karl Marx's discussion is framed in socio-political aspects. However, Buya Hamka chose Karl Marx as an influential figure in the modern century and mentioned him in the Al-Azhar interpretation. This article was written to analyze Karl Marx's position in Buya Hamka's Al-Azhar interpretation. This research is framed qualitatively with a descriptive-analytical approach to realize primary data and reveal Hamka's argumentative description related to Karl Marx. This research is based on two primary sources, the Al-Azhar interpretation and research relevant to the discussion. To reveal the representation of Karl Marx in Surah Al-Baqarah verses 177 and 272, this study theoretically adopts Stuart Hall's theory of representation to comprehensively reveal the role and position of Karl Marx. Preliminary results show that at the reflective representation level, Marxism is often portrayed in mainstream media as a dangerous ideology. Also, at the intentional representation level, the political bias of the old order, which tended to be anti-communist, colored Hamka's interpretation and positioned Marx as its figurehead. And at the constructional representation level, Hamka compared Marxist teachings with the Islamic justice system. In this case, Hamka's interpretation shows the results of social and cultural construction in the anti-communist era. Ultimately, this study bridges the understanding of Karl Marx's socialism and Islamic social teachings with nuances of interpretation, as well as offering a critical study of non-Muslim figures who have made significant contributions to Islamic discourse.

Abstract

This research departs from the urgency of understanding poverty not only as an economic issue, but also as a multidimensional phenomenon that is full of social and spiritual meaning in an Islamic perspective. This study aims to reinterpret the term "miskīn" in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 184 using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach. The research aims to explore the textual and contextual meaning of the verse through Ricoeur's three stages of hermeneutics: semantic understanding, reflection, and existential appropriation, to produce meanings that are more relevant to contemporary social conditions, especially in the context of poverty in Indonesia. The method used is qualitative with literature studies as a data collection technique, and analysis is carried out descriptive-analytically based on a hermeneutic theoretical framework. The results of the study show that the term "miskīn" in the verse does not only refer to material conditions, but also reflects the structural vulnerability, helplessness, and social responsibility of Muslims towards vulnerable groups. This verse contains an ethical dimension that demands the internalization of the values of care, empathy, and social justice through worship such as fidyah. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the understanding of the text of the Qur'an needs to be contextualized with social realities through a hermeneutic approach, so that the divine message can be a transformative inspiration in overcoming poverty as a fundamental humanitarian problem.

Abstract

This research delves into the idea of physiognomy as a means of interpreting human nonverbal cues within the context of the Qur'an and Fakhruddin al-Razi's commentary in Mafātihul Ghaib. Traditionally considered a pseudo-science, physiognomy is reimagined here as a link between the physical and spiritual aspects of human expression. The study addresses a gap in prior research, which often confines nonverbal analysis in the Qur'an to linguistic or semiotic aspects, neglecting psychological and spiritual dimensions. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study investigates nine Qur'anic verses that depict facial expressions, gestures, and bodily signals through al-Razi's hermeneutical perspective. The results indicate that al-Razi consistently views the human body as a communicative entity that expresses internal states-such as faith, arrogance, sorrow, and joy-through nonverbal cues that resonate with divine communication. By integrating al-Razi's interpretations with contemporary nonverbal communication theories, the study highlights an epistemological continuity between classical tafsir and cognitive science. This study aims to analyze how al-Razi interprets nonverbal human signals in the Qur'an and to connect his interpretation with modern cognitive science.
