Abstract

Background: Many efforts have been made to overcome Iodine Deficiency Disease but its prevalence in Indonesia is still high. Total Goiter Rate (TGR) of elementary school children is rising from 9.8% in 1998 to 10.3% in 2003. In Gunungkidul District TGR is as high as 12.2% in 2002. The most possible cause is low iodine consumption which is 73.08% in 2003. Other possible causes are low iodine intake, goitrogenic consumption, low social economic life, knowledge, attitude and inappropriate eating behavior, etc. Objectives: To know the relationship between social economic factors, knowledge, attitude and iodine consumption behavior with iodine intake of pregnant mothers. Methods: The study was a cross sectional type which was done from October — December 2004 at 6 sub districts of IDD endemic area, Gunungkidul District. Samples consisted of 258 pregnant mothers. Iodine intake data as dependent variable were collected using Food Frequency Questionnaires. There were 7 independent variables: mothers' education, income, and food expenditure, n umber of dependants, knowledge, and attitude and iodine consumption behavior which were collected using scored questionnaires. Pearson Correlation and Odd Ratio were used for bivariate analysis whereas Multiple Regression was used for multivariate analysis. Results: Average level of education was 2.65% (elementary school graduate, junior high school drop out). Average family income was Rp772.712,00 (>regional minimum wage). Average food expenditure was Rp339.380,00 (52.9% of total expenditure and 43.9% of total family income). Average number of dependants was 5 persons. Average iodine intake was 139.4 pg/day. Average knowledge, attitude and behavior score was 71.0, 109.7 and 73.5 subsequently. Correlation analysis with odd ratio showed: there was relationship between income and iodine intake (r2 = 0.252; OR=5.7); there was relationship between attitude and iodine intake (r2 = 0.13; OR =2.1); there was relationship between behavior and iodine intake (r2= 0.95; OR =11.2). Linear regression analysis showed that behavior variable had the greatest contribution to iodine intake. Conclusion: There was relationship between knowledge and iodine intake. There was relationship between food expenditure and iodine intake. There was relationship between number of dependants and iodine intake. There was relationship between attitude and iodine intake and there was relationship between behavior and iodine intake. There was relationship between knowledge and iodine intake. Keywords: education, income, food expenditure, dependants, knowledge, attitude and behavior, iodine intake, pregnant mothers

Three in-depth interviews with junior high school teachers were done to triangulate the results from student. Result: The youth in this study has negative perception on drugs. The boys knew the harm and bad consequences of using drug. They were aware that drug abuse is forbidden by religion and it is a sin to do so, and this was stressed upon particularly by urban youth. Abstract

Background: Sabang is one of endemic malaria areas in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) Province. The first in-vitro resistance case to chloroquine was reported in 1983 and the in-vivo resistance case in the level of RII was also observed in 1983. Chloroquine is still used as the first line drug in the malaria control programmed at Sabang. The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of treatment failure of chloroquine to falciparum malaria and to analyze the risk factors associated to affect its failure in Sabang. Method: This study was an in-vivo test for 28 days using the protocol from WHO 2003. The protocol is used to assess the efficacy of chloroquine in uncomplicated falciparum malaria treatment, based on clinical and parasitological examination. The study was implemented in the General Hospital of Sabang and Puskesmas Paya Seunara region, during January – July 2004. The subjects are patient of malaria with mono infection of P. falciparum and include in inclusion criteria. In order to investigate the risk factors of the treatment failure, observational case control design was used. Result and conclusion: The result shows that: 62,14% adequate clinical and parasitological response (ACPR), 10,68% early treatment failure (ETF), 14,56% late clinical failure (LCF), and 12,62% late parasitological failure (LPF). on 14th day evaluation. Evaluation on 28th day shows that: 52,43% ACPR, 10,68% ETF, 20,39% LCF and 16,5% LPF. The risk factors that have significant relationship with treatment failure are splenomegaly (OR=6,06; 95%C1=1,86)

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TBC), a direct infectious disease, was affected by multifactorial such as malnutrition. Malnutrition often increases the risk of tuberculosis diseases and vice versa. The research was did to know the changes of body mass index (BMI) on tuberculosis patients with positive Acid-Fast Bacilli after treatment with antituberculosis drugs category 1 in intensive phase. The research used one group with pre- and post-test design. Method and Result: The research subjects were the tuberculosis patients with positive AFB who treat in puskesmas rujukan mikroskopis dan puskesmas pelaksana mandiri in district Banjar 2004. Data were collected by measuring the height and body-weight's patients before and after treatment. Nutritional status was state based on BMI. The results showed nutritional status before treatment was underweight (82.8%), normal (16.1%) and overweight (1.1%). After treatment, nutritional status changes to underweight (66.7%), to normal (31.1%) and to overweight (2.2%). Conclusion: The mean of body-weight before treatment was 39.49 kgs and after treatment changes to 41.97 kgs. The mean of BMI's patients before and after treatment were 16.39 and 17.44, respectively. Based on statistic test, it showed the bodyweight, BM! and nutritional status's patients before and after treatment were difference significantly
