Abstract

This was a qualitative study of word formation processes of Indonesian slang words in the Cosmo Girl!. To reveal the type of word formation and the most frequent type of word formation processes, the writer used two theories of word formation processes, namely word formation processes by Yule (2006) supported by Indonesian word formation processes by Chaedar (1994). The findings revealed four types of word formation processes, namely Clipping (3.22%), Blending (3.22%), Borrowing (19.35%) and Multiple Processes (74.19%). Although the Multiple Processes took a crucial part in forming Indonesian slang words, the process of borrowing dominantly occurred in the Multiple Processes. Especially English was often used in the borrowing process. Besides, the findings revealed processes that are not stated in both of the theories, namely Addition, Substitution and Deletion. These three processes were needed to adjust to Indonesian spelling system.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the consequences that Josey Aimes and Erin Brockovich face in disobeying the patriarchal values in North Country and Erin Brockovich. Patriarchal society where Aimes and Brockovich live, demands that the roles of women are as domestic creatures. If they cannot accept their roles, as the consequences, they will be punished by the people who guard the patriarchal values. It can be seen that Aimes and Brockovich are still bound by the patriarchal values which inhibit their position to express themselves. Their effort to get equality shows how the patriarchal values are deeply rooted in their society because both men and women guard those values.

Abstract

Psychological issue is the main issue discussed in David Koepp’s Secret Window through its main character, Mort Rainey. Rainey’s psychological struggle will be the main theme in this research. This thesis examines Rainey’s split personality. Furthermore, in this study, we want to analyze the process of how Mort Rainey’s personality splits into two different personalities. To meet the answer of this study, we will use the theory of Dissociative Identity Disorder with a support from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory about the three psyche agents. In this study, we discover that the process of Mort Rainey’s split personality begins with a traumatic experience, then continues with the repression and compartmentalization to create John Shooter. Finally, the split personality that Mort Rainey experiences is useful as a great defense for Mort Rainey to cope with his trauma.

Abstract

This article explores the causes and effects of inferiority complex in a character of a manga created by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist. Commonly seen as a child’s play and underestimated by the society of literature, comic book or manga actually has the same quality as those considered as literary arts and stands equally with them. It embraces issues freely without the restriction of social rules and individual or group and uncontaminated by social, personal, or political influences. One of the issues most people think will not be in a comic book is psychology. Started from comparing himself to humans, the main antagonist, Homunculus, suffers from an inferiority complex caused by several factors such as parental attitude, physical defects, and envy. Furthermore, as the effect of suffering inferiority complex, Homunculus develops psychological defenses to ease his inferiorities: compensation and superiority complex. He tries to compensate his inferior feelings by excelling in another area and covers up the inferiorities by striving for superiority and omnipotence.

Abstract

This research aims to help people understand about turn-taking irregularities, overlap and interruption and why it occurs. The classification of interruption is based on the definition of the interruption from Wardhaugh (1985). The writer believes that interruption and overlap are caused by certain reasons. The writer is interested in observing interruption and overlap in “Indonesia Lawyers Club” because she wanted to know which parties in this show produced more number of interruptions and overlaps, especially in an interactive dialog. There are two parties in this dialog, namely host and guests/panelist. This study was a qualitative study; the writer got the data from the transcript, which she did it manually. The writer analyzed all interruptions and overlaps from the host an guests/panelists which occurred in this show and classified the reason. The writer wanted to find out what the common reason of interruption and overlap are in this study. To decide the reason of interruption and overlap the writer looked at the context of the discussion between the host and the guest/panelists. The writer found that interruptions occurred more than overlaps. The common reason was seeking of clarification, and the other reason was confirming, completing, breaking up, and showing agreement. From all of this reason the writer conclude that interruptions and overlaps in this talk-show were not violation.

Abstract

There are negative assumptions on fantasy that it is unrealistic and considered as immature and unacceptable. However, there are times when fantasy is the only way to cope the problems in the real life. In this study, I am going to analyze Alice in Wonderland (2010) movie in order to find out why Alice creates a fantasy of Wonderland. Using the theory of Freudian Psychology, I find that the causes of Alice creating Wonderland are three anxieties which are anxiety on tradition, love, and loss. These anxieties lead Alice to use two defense mechanisms, which are blocking her desire and creating Wonderland. Here, Alice’s Wonderland serves to solve her problem in the real life and satisfy her desires or ‘id’. In conclusion, fantasy is not always negative, but it can be positive.Alice’s Anxieties and Defense Mechanismsin Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

Abstract

Among video games, The Xenosaga Trilogy is widely recognized due to its complex storyline. The psychological struggle of the main character, Shion Uzuki, is one of the aspects that drives the story from the beginning up to its conclusion. Despite her seemingly bright personality, Shion has an absence of love and hopes, as she lives her life monotonously without any set goal. It later leads her to develop a strong attachment to KOS-MOS, an android. As such, in this study, we want to analyze the reasons Shion has the absence of love and hopes in the first place and the ways she struggles to recover from that absence. In order to answer these questions, we use 3 psychological theories, namely Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Transference, and Countertransference. We find out that Shion’s absence of love and hopes is apparently caused by her traumatic past and her PTSD. As a unconscious response to this, Shion tries to recover by using transference. This attempt fails, but Shion is finally healed thanks to KOS-MOS’ countertransference. In conclusion, Shion fully recovers from her traumatic past and PTSD because of KOS-MOS’ countertransference instead of her own transference.
