Abstract

The researcher intends to find out how the culture of the husband, which is a Chinese Indonesian can affect or change his wife’s cultural identity as a Javanese amidst the oppression from the Suharto’s government. Cultural theories related to cultural identity will be used to analyse the findings from the respondent. The research will be conducted in semi-structured interview to gain the data from the respondent. The findings suggest that the respondent’s cultural identity as a Javanese develops and shifts. Even though she still has some Javanese culture aspects, the husband indeed influenced the respondent’s identity by his actions and made the respondent embrace some Chinese values like hardworking and discipline. Keywords: intercultural marriage; cultural identity; Chinese Indonesian; Javanese; culture

Abstract

This study was done to investigate how narratives on issues or topics of serious concern focusing on COVID-19 pandemic, dated back from April to December 2020, were constructed in the selected Instagram feeds and the existing patterns of regularities could be identified in the narratives. To answer these two research questions, the writer uses theories from Labov (1967, as cited in De Fina & Johnstone, 2015) about narrative construction as the theory. The subjects of this study were the Instagram feeds of three influencers, namely: dr. Tirta, dr. Reisa and dr. Sonia. The findings showed that in general, all of the three doctors’ narratives have five narrative elements: abstract, orientation, complicating action, resolution, and coda. However, two of dr. Sonia's narratives have four narrative elements: abstract, orientation, complicating action and coda. This is due to dr. Sonia's narratives that have less lines than dr. Reisa's narratives.Keyword: Narrative, Instagram, Instagram feeds, COVID-19, Pandemic.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the ways Maudy Ayunda, as the talk show's host, performs requests and responds to Ayu's and Nadiem's requests which have different genders. Also, the analysis was leveled up to the relation of politeness and gender. The main theory used was Watts (2003), focusing on the first-order politeness connected to Indonesian (Javanese) culture. Other supporting theories and studies from Suseno (2003), Kuntjara (2009), and Mills (2003) were used. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach using utterance/s as the unit of analysis. The findings revealed that Maudy mostly used indirect patterns in conveying the requests and accepted the guests' requests as her response. Several direct patterns were found but could be considered appropriate if analyzed based on the context. Concerning gender, Maudy used more direct patterns to answer Nadiem's requests than Ayu's.Keywords: politeness, first-order politeness, requests, utterance

Abstract

The world has never been more connected than it is today and one key contributor to that fact is the growth of social networking sites. With the sum of about 4.2 billion active users, more than half of the human population, social networking sites have become a highway for information. From holding private conversations to appreciating others’ posts, social media users leave crumbs of information – one of which is a “Like”. ‘Like’ carries a plethora of information, and decoding it offers invaluable insight. This research aims to study the motives behind the act of ‘Liking’ an Instagram post. Following the data collection, an analysis using Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory will be carried out. With it, the researcher concluded that the motives behind ‘Liking’ an Instagram posts are to manage relationship, form an identity, state affinity, provide support, and prompt similar behavior. Keywords: Social media, Instagram, Instagram Like, Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), Motives

Therefore in this study, the researcher intends to find out the communication problems related to language and culture between a Chinese-Indonesian wife and a Taiwanese husband, and how they manage the problems using the communication competence they develop over cultural differences. Abstract

Several studies have compared translation strategies to analyze subtitles and dubbing in movies, but few have compared the differences between the two mediums. This study compared the translation strategies used in movie subtitles and dubbing. Baker's (2018) translation strategies are used to analyze the Disney+ subtitle and dubbing of The Greatest Showman. Baker (2018) identifies 12 translation strategies used in the subtitle and dubbing: general word, more neutral/less expressive word, cultural substitution, loan word and explanation, paraphrase using related words, paraphrase using unrelated words, omission, idiom of similar meaning and form, idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, paraphrase, omission of a play on idiom, omission of entire idiom. One strategy, borrowing the source language idiom, employed by the dubbing is not found in the subtitle and one strategy, illustration, is not used in both. The fact that using the same strategy does not produce the same translation result shows that there are infinite interpretations. Keywords: translation strategies, subtitle, dubbing

Abstract

Stereotypes has been ingrained in the society for a very long time. According to Daniel Katz and Kenneth Braly (1933), stereotyping guides to racial discrimination just after people respond to a particular group and assign the characteristic of the group emotionally. Cultural expectations have dominated societies around the world, and become an obstacle to women, including in career. However, they start to break down the barriers to show how traditional gender roles belong in the past. Therefore, in college majors, they started to enter the male-dominated majors. This research aims to find out what cultural values do the female students believe related to gender roles and its relationship with their chosen major and career. The theory that will be used is gender roles. A qualitative approach will be used by interviewing and collecting all the data from the students who are majoring in Informatics Engineering and Business Information System (SIB) in Petra Christian University. Keywords: gender roles, non-traditional career, male-dominated majors, education, career choice
