Abstract

In this study, I want to analyze two films called Moana and Brave by Disney Animation. In this film there is a difference in characteristics of a princess who is usually in the field of others, just quiet and waiting for others to help them. That is the reason why I wanted to focus on the main characters named Moana and Merida who have the other side of a princess usually. This thesis talks about the issue of how the characters of Moana and Merida reflect the characteristics of girl power. The thesis aims to show that Moana and Merida can reflect the characteristics of Girl power through their decisiveness, smartness and boldness. In this study, I used girl power theory that Rebecca Walker as pioneer of the third-wave pioneer. As a result, I have found that Moana and Merida reflected the characteristics of Girl power that made them show a new side of the characteristics of a princess that is usually displayed by Disney. Keywords: Disney, Girl Power, decisiveness, smartness, boldness

Abstract

This study compares the girl power characteristics such as bravery, independence, and intelligence in identifying Rapunzel as the earlier princess character and Moana as the recent princess character of the third generation of Disney Princesses in the two Disney Princess Animated Films titled Tangled and Moana. As a result of this study, I found that in terms of bravery, Moana as the recent princess, is more daring to make decisions and take risks when compared to Rapunzel as the earlier princess of the third generation. In terms of independence, it can also be seen that Rapunzel still seems to rely more on other people to help her find a way and protect herself, in contrast to Moana, who can find the destination by herself and work together with other people and make them become her partners. In terms of intelligence, both Rapunzel and Moana are good at managing their daily activities, but in terms of solving problems, Rapunzel still uses the power of magical stuff, unlike Moana, who uses all her mind and strength to solve the problems she faces. Keywords: girl power, bravery, independence, intelligence, characteristics

Abstract

The fear of death has long plagued people for its unknown implications and the burden of grief that comes with it; however, it is not something that people often acknowledge. This work intends to highlight that fear-related issues should not be understated as trivial negative emotions and need more awareness. Using the death anxiety and protection motivation theories, I discovered that there are hidden conflicts behind death anxiety that people need to address to minimize their symptoms and eventually undergo a successful coping process. The story follows the struggle of Sasha, who initially rejects her beloved Kaiser’s death by creating alternate universes to save him but then slowly realizes that her interferences are harmful. In the end, she finally accepts his death and moves on. Through that angle, this work aims to motivate people that while death happens inevitably, they can always handle their fear through a more positive mindset. Keywords: death anxiety, codependency, coping, science fiction, dark fantasy, alternate universes

Abstract

Digitalization has been an inevitable part of human lives, and education is not an exception. Digitalization is, however, only a part of the change. While digitalization is just using digital technologies and digitized data for an impact, digital transformation is broader adoption of digital technology and cultural change. It is more about the people, rather than the technology. One of the most prominent examples is the integration of the digital culture and the school culture, creating “digital school culture”. Concerns arise from the change, especially isolation from peers and decreased effectiveness on practical lessons . In this case, the creativity to integrate digital culture in online settings to accommodate these concerns is necessary. This research attempts to find the three high schools in Tabanan’s current state of digital school culture and plan of development for the future. The data is gained through semi-impromptu interviews with three high schools’ vice-principal of curriculum and vice-principal of student affairs in Tabanan. Their answers are then analyzed through digital culture and school culture theory. Their answers will also be compared with each other to figure out the similarities and differences in their implementation of digital school culture. Keywords: digital culture, school culture, digital school culture, digital transformation, digital native, digital immigrant, Tabanan high school

Abstract

Television occupies widespread popularity and is the best and most effective medium for commercials. With the rapid business growth, television commercial (TVC) has been more and more creatively made. TVC producers usually use semiotic resources to represent a certain character. Through this study, we aim to discover the way the man/husband and woman/wife characters are represented in Royco’s The Best Gift is Homemade TVC and Kecap ABC’s Kecap ABC Bantu Suami Sejati Hargai Istri TVC using visual, gestural, and linguistic modes, and whether the representations challenge or support the traditional roles of man/husband and woman/wife and the reason using traditional gender role theory. Our findings show that, in both TVCs, the man/husband and woman/wife are represented modern roles of man/husband and woman/wife. By doing so, the TVCs persuade the target audience, regardless of their roles as man/husband or woman/wife, to cook with Royco and Kecap ABC.Keywords: Multimodality, Representations, Television Commercial (TVC)

Abstract

The mask or persona will be discussed in the first subchapter. Gintoki and Hijikata both have a mask that they wear to show to other people or society. Gintoki's persona is lazy, childish, and cowardly since his motivation is to live a carefree life, free of obligations, and to project an image that others will not hold high expectations of him. Behind every façade is their genuine personality, which they prefer not to project. The shadow will be discussed in the second subchapter. Their repressed feelings and flaws are contained in the shadow. I will also go through how each character's shadow works. Gintoki's shadow is his guilt about killing his own teacher as a result of being forced to make some difficult decisions. Whereas Hijikata’s shadow is regret of being unable to save his brother. The findings are that a human psyche is complex, and each has his different causes and outcomes. Keywords: samurai, persona, shadow, anima, animus, personality

Abstract

This study aims to find out the women’s and men’s language features used by Jeffree Star in his monologue entitled Full Face of Brands That Hate Me. The theoretical framework was based on Lakoff (2004) and Coates (2004) theories of language features. This study employed a qualitative approach. I found that Jeffree Star used color terms, adjectives, hedges, intonations, grammar, politeness, swear words, commands and directives, and questions. Jeffree Star also used two language features at the same time namely color terms and hedges, grammar and questions, swear words and hedges, and swear words and politeness. The use of language features by Jeffree Star was influenced by the topic of the talk and the gender identity. Further studies involving more subjects, objects, or other socio variables are needed to achieve a better understanding of the use of women’s and men’s language features. Keywords: language features, monologue, beauty vlogger

Abstract

This thesis discusses how Jesus is portrayed as a New Messiah in the film Son of God. In the Son of God, Jesus is completely a different Messiah compared to the most popular concept about Messiah in the first century. Jewish people believed that a Messiah would come with similar characteristics like King David who was strong, gathering a strong army to beat the enemy and set the people free from oppression. By using the theory of Messiah, I would like to analyze how Jesus is portrayed as a new Messiah. Jesus came as a humble man in a poor family. During his ministry, he gathered low-profile disciples because his intention was not to build an earthly kingdom but the divine one. He served the people by performing miracles by his own authority to show that he had divine nature. Jesus also experienced suffering and death in order to save the people from eternal death. The last, Jesus resurrected from death proving that all of his Messianic claims were true and he had divine nature. Keywords: Messiah, the Davidic Messiah, Jesus
