Abstract

Mental health has been overlooked in Indonesia for too long. Labels like ‘nuts’ and ‘insane’ are often associated with the matter, creating a stigma that undermines its significance. Therefore, this creative work intends to bring forth the urgency of mental health awareness, especially on women who are more prone to mental illness than men. The chosen topic is schizophrenia, which can result in fatal impacts, including suicide, if left untreated. The story follows Sandra, an Indonesian female police detective who unknowingly is battling schizophrenia while trying to catch a skilled mysterious criminal. After a series of regressions, she grows more miserable, reaches peak devastation when struck by grief, and tries to end her life. However, she manages to overcome the pain and, with the help of proper treatment, puts the illness under control. Conclusively, this work aims to highlight the importance of early treatment and awareness of mental illnesses.

Abstract

One of the many reasons why atheists are shunned is the common belief that lack of faith leads to a lack of moral foundation. However, analyses on the moral behaviors of atheists and religious people show that atheists behave similarly to any other group and that they possess their own methods of discovering a moral foundation. This thesis explores the discrimination atheists face within Indonesian society, and how atheists are able to develop and possess their own moral foundation. This thesis uses Turiel’s psychological Social Domain Theory, which is used to explain the moral panic around atheism as well as how morality develops outside of religious teaching. The creative work comes in the form of a magical realist novella about a young woman who slowly reconstructs her view on morality while on a journey to find God for an old corpse, guided by a mysterious archivist.

Abstract

This qualitative study was conducted to determine how speakers of different genders employed conversational strategies. In addition, the writer intended to find the similarities and differences in the use of conversational strategies by male and female speakers. Therefore, the writer chose to analyze the guest stars of SB30's podcast that represented both genders. The guest stars were Gilang Widya Permana (male) and Shandy Purnamasari (female). To analyze the data, the writer referred to Gender and Conversational Strategies theory by Coates (2013). Coates (2013) classifies conversational strategies into seven strategies. This study showed that Gilang used six out of seven strategies, while Shandy used all seven. The writer concludes that conversational strategies can be used by men and women, depending on one's emerging condition. Therefore, the chances of using conversational strategies for both genders are equal.

Abstract

This descriptive-quantitative study is aimed at finding out the types of impoliteness super-strategies used by Sylvie toward her employee, Emily, in Emily in Paris season one, as well as the most and least frequently used types. The main theory used is Culpeper's (1996, 2005) impoliteness strategy. The findings reveal that Sylvie has implemented all five types of impoliteness super-strategies. The most common is negative impoliteness which most likely occurs because Sylvie always opposes Emily on purposes despite knowing how much Emily wants to be professionally acknowledged at Savoir. The least frequently used is withhold politeness, which might happen because although Sylvie is a generally nice person, she uses clearer impolite strategies to Emily on purpose. The writers conclude that Sylvie purposefully uses impoliteness strategies and adds impolite gestures, to bring Emily down and to emphasize her power to get rid of Emily from Savoir. Keywords: impoliteness, impoliteness strategy, status, utterance

Abstract

CV. Petra Kharisma Abadi, now PeKA, is a company that makes and sells food-boxes in Magelang and Kedu areas. The customers are mainly from Magelang, 60% females 40% males, aged between 25 - 55 years. The main problem that I have found from the customer survey is lack of brand awareness, because the target customers cannot recognize the name of the company and its’ product. From the customer survey, I found that the solutions are making a new brand name, logo, and slogan. Besides, the company must highlight the USPs (durability, beauty, and low price). I used theories that focus on my main subjects, which are brand awareness, brand name, logo, and slogan. There are three benefits from the solution: target customers can be more familiar with the company, can boost sales by having the target market’s trust, and can later have a correct method of promotions after good branding.

Abstract

This study examines the expressions considered as offensive language produced by all characters in their workplaces in Billions and the subtitle translation strategies used to translate them. The writer applied two theories: Battistella’s (2005) theory of offensive language and Pedersen’s (2011) theory of subtitle translation strategy. This study was done using a qualitative approach. The expressions produced fall into all four categories: Vulgarity, Epithets, Profanity, and Obscenity. In addition, four out of six subtitle translation strategies are used to translate the offensive language: Substitution, Omission, Generalization, and Direct Translation. Both Retention and Specification are not used. Some expressions that are linguistically considered offensive language may not carry the offense when applied in a certain context of the conversation. Substituting the offensive language with another local expression ensures the message is delivered and maintains the unpleasant impression whereas euphemizing or eliminating it may significantly alter the original nuance.

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring child neglect cases and to raise awareness about it. Child neglect is the failure to provide for the shelter, safety, supervision, and nutritional needs of the child. Child neglect is an underrated topic because it can be difficult to determine whether a parent is neglecting his/her child due to its unintentional nature. This paper explores what child neglect is, the possible effect of it such as disorganized attachment disorder, and ways to recover from said disorder. This paper uses the Attachment Theory by John Bowlby and the finding of the research is in the form of a screenplay. The screenplay uses tragicomedy as its genre, telling a story about a boy, Benny, who was neglected by his father as a child and now suffers from disorganized attachment disorder. Throughout his journey, he tries to recover from it by building trustful relationships and face his father about his neglected past. Keywords: child neglect, disorganized attachment disorder, screenplay, tragicomedy
