Abstract

This research deals with multimodality or multimodal discourse analysis in analyzing the notion of beauty in a Youtube video. It aims at finding how an advertisement uses the multiple modes in constructing the meaning, which is the notion of beauty. For this research, the object of the analysis is Dove’s video advertisement entitled “Dove Real Beauty Sketches”, which was uploaded to the YouTube channel of Dove in 2013. The issue that Dove is trying to convey through the advertisement is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One’s perception of beauty can differ from another. If one person describe himself/herself as unattractive, other people may think that the person is actually attractive. Through this research, I want to find how that issue is constructed through the analysis of the multiple modes used in the advertisement. The multiple modes consist of the verbal and non-verbal expressions displayed by the female participants, Olivia, Melinda, Kela, and Florence. Keywords: advertisement, beauty, notion, multimodal discourse analysis

Abstract

In Indonesia, mental illnesses, or more specifically, depression, is still seen as a moral failure, a failure to conform in society due to a faulty moral upbringing. However, little spotlight is given towards the immediate family of a sufferer, how a sufferer places burdens on their family in terms of economy, psychology, and social life, in addition to the burden of sympathy as the result of having to put the needs of someone else above onself. To depict such suffering and help make it more visible, I created a story, written from the perspective of someone close to a sufferer, to show how the immediate family also suffers from the negative stigma attached to a sufferer. Keywords: sufferer, burden of sympathy, depression.

Abstract

Jasapindah.id is a relocation service under PT 3 Permata Logistics management. They provide relocation, packing, and warehouse services. However, the main problem that Jasapindah.id faced was the ineffective use of the social media of Instagram. The current Instagram contents were not good because the information needed was not complete, the quality of the picture was low, and the content was not updated regularly. Hence, the solution was managing its Instagram account by giving comprehensive information, improving the quality of the pictures, and making the content schedules. I improved the Instagram contents and pictures based on the theories from Walter and Gioglio (2014) and Simone (2013). After I managed the account, the brand awareness has increased, as proved by the increasing number of followers and accounts who contacted Jasapindah.id through direct messages and comments. Hopefully, the revised Instagram contents can increase the brand awareness of Jasapindah.id and led to better sales. Keyword: brand awareness, social media, Instagram

Abstract

This study attempts to show the forms of power exercised by a government and the resistance by the powerless in Isle of Dogs. In this study, I focus on power relations between the government led by Mayor Kobayashi and the powerless party which are the people and dogs. I address two problems which are the way the government exercises power and the way the powerless resists it.  I use Foucauldian power relations and the concept of propaganda by Michel Sproule to help me analyze the problems.  From the analysis, I find that power is exercised by the subjects who are able to manipulate others from their strategic position. I also found that power is fluid, and it transforms as it faces struggle and resistance. Finally, I find that in the field of power relations in a democratic society, people have a big role in determining the form and strength of the power that circulates in that society. Keywords: Power, Resistance, Strategy, Democracy, Obedience.

Abstract

This thesis discusses the process of maturity of Pi in Life of Pi. I am curious to find out how Pi is mature from his childhood, teenager, and adulthood. Therefore, I use Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development to find out the influence of the society that Pi lives in. In each stage of Pi’s development, I study his character traits and I see the outcome. In addition, I am using psychological development to find out what is inside Pi’s mind and what is his way of thinking. Throughout the process, Pi faces some obstacles or psychosocial crisis from his surroundings especially from his father and friends in his childhood and early teenager years. However, because of the obstacles from his surroundings, Pi becomes mature in taking his actions and decisions. In addition, Pi faces a big situation that is surviving in the sea with Richard Parker. I can see from this experience, Pi finds his identities that are self-acceptance, compassion, patience, honesty, gratitude, self-control, accountability, open-mindedness, and humility. Despite the hardship from his childhood and teenage years, Pi manages to be emotionally mature. As a result, Pi is indeed mature in his life and it can be seen in his adulthood. Pi has an intimate relationship with his wife and children. Keywords: Maturity Process, Identity, Role Confusion, Adulthood, Life of Pi

Abstract

This study analyzed Ingenius video advertisement. Ingenius is a video advertisement produced by Samsung. However, Samsung only shows its competitor’s product (Apple IPhone X) from the beginning until the end of the video. The video is divided into seven segments and was analyzed by using both Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis three-dimension framework by Fairclough. This study is expected to find how the Apple IPhone X is represented by Samsung in their Ingenius video advertisement, to find the Ingenius messages according to Samsung’s website, to see the reaction of its consumers, and to find how the brand positioning of Samsung and Apple in the society. Multimodal Discourse Analysis is used to analyze the inner dimension of the framework by using Ingenius video advertisement as the text or discourse. The second dimension is analyzed by using the official Samsung explanation from its website about the video to see the meaning of each segment from the producer to consumers and using the YouTube comments to see how the consumers of the video (viewers) react after watching the video. The outer dimension sees the brand positioning from online newspapers, websites, and blogs to see how the society perceives Apple and Samsung as smartphone brands. Keywords: Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Advertisements, Discourse.

Abstract

This thesis deals with the understanding of justice in the novel. I use theory of retributive justice and two supporting theories about morality and code of conducts of private investigators. In this analysis, I analyze two characters who have strong reasons in helping me understand the justice. I analyze Hercule Poirot because he is the main character and also symbolizes justice due to his moral choice in the story. Next, I analyze Linda Arden because she is the mastermind and has the strong emotional scar to bring out her point of view of justice. The conclusion that can be found in this analysis is that justice in retribution includes an action that precedes the legal procedure. It can justify some action outside the legal written law. Key words: Justice, morality, code, legality, procedure, criminal

Abstract

The screenplay Don’t Speak, Maharani is the story of Maharani as a rape survivor who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. Using drama as the genre of the story, the screenplay shows multiple struggles of Maharani who lives her life with unsupportive family which is worsening her psychological state. Since the screenplay focuses on the act of victim blaming which is worsening rape survivor’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the story focuses on Maharani reaction towards the action given to her. As the plot advances, it shows how Maharani’s PTSD is worsened by victim blaming given to her. In the end, Maharani tries to heal by taking drugs but she gets overdose. In order to create this screenplay, I use two concepts which are rape and PTSD and rape and victim blaming. The issues regarding victim blaming and PTSD are rarely brought up in a form of a screenplay. However, I believe victim blaming is an act of killing and needs to be stoped. Keyword: Rape, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Victim Blaming.
