Abstract

This creative thesis aims to show depressive symptoms in men, the stigma associated with depression, and the way stigma impacts depressed individuals by means of a screenplay. Using drama as the genre and psychological drama as the sub-genre, I exploit the emotional strain of the main character to show the struggles of male depression as well as the brutal consequences of stigma. The screenplay, titled Coda, follows Arya, a boy who struggles with depression and stigma associated with depression. As the story progresses, Arya’s mental health condition increasingly declines. Arya exhibits depressive symptoms although they are not typically recognized as depression. These include frequent irritability and inappropriate anger, escapists behavior, physical symptoms, problems with drug use, and risky behavior. In addition to that, Arya also experiences personal stigma from his family, which gradually affects their relationship and ultimately leads him to impulsively commit suicide. Keywords: Male depression, stigma, impact

Abstract

Fierce competition in increasing market share growth prompts companies to strive to create a memorable brand identity. One common method adopted by some companies is using a video advertisement, which contains the message they want to convey about their product or brand. This message is intended to persuade people who see the advertisement to buy their product. In doing so, companies usually use the visual, linguistic, spatial and other semiotic resources, often referred to as a semiotic mode. Through the case study of Innisfree’s video advertisement “Brand History,” we analyze how Innisfree uses linguistic, spatial, and visual mode for creating a message that enables consumers to remember and to persuade them buy its product. Our findings show that the message in the video advertisement is that Innisfree is a beauty product that upholds nature as its ingredients, has high quality, and preserves the environment where it takes its ingredients. Key Words: Advertisement, Persuasion, Modes, Verbal and Non-verbal expressions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the impacts of conversion therapy and the self-transformation of the main characters in Boy Erased and The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which are two films published post-legalisation of same-sex marriage in America. Both main characters showed signs of self-loathing, decreased authenticity, and feeling anger and disappointment due to conversion therapy. The two characters are first portrayed as victims and survivor of conversion therapy at the end of the film. Jared was shown as a silent victim turned outspoken survivor. Cameron was shown as a rebellious victim and survivor. Both films showed the growth from victims into survivors, which gave a strong, capable and hopeful image of homosexuals and is a contrast from some representation of homosexuals of the past. Despite the similarity in ending up as survivors, the two characters picked different fights. Keywords: Homosexual, Film, Victim, Survivor, Conversion therapy.
