Abstract

This study is about the use of rhetorical devices in podcasts, entitled, How They Keep You POOR! (Watch This To Become A MILLIONAIRE In 2023) | Alex Hormozi. The purpose of this study is to analyze types of rhetorical devices and find the differences and similarities used by Lewis and Alex. The present study employs 15 rhetorical devices by McGuigan (2007) to identify the rhetorical devices used in the podcast. Podcast’s transcripts were examined using a qualitative approach to find the rhetorical devices. The result of the findings is Lewis uses 4 rhetorical devices: hyperbole, hypophora, allusion, exemplum, where Alex uses 9 rhetorical devices: hyperbole, hypophora, rhetorical question, distinctio, imagery/simile, metaphor, allusion, sententia, exemplum. Understatement, litotes, procatalepsis, analogy, and eponym are not used in the podcast. In the difference, Lewis did not use rhetorical question, distinctio, imagery/simile, metaphor, and sentenia. However, in the similarity both Lewis and Alex used hyperbole, hypophora, allusion, and exemplum. In conclusion, hyperbole and exemplum can be used as the tools for the speaker’s to inspire the audience because it is exaggerating statements and gives the related matter in the real-life context which can grab the audience’s attention.

Abstract

This study explores how heels dancers challenge social norms around the female bodyand examines audience reactions along with the dancers' responses. Using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model, the analysis highlights how these dancers employ subversive strategies, framed by Foucault’s counter-conduct, Butler’s gender performativity, and Dolezal’s body shame. Data includes Instagram posts and audience comments from @jessynirmalaa, @heelsnation.id, and @curvescollective.id from August 2021 to July 2024. The findings reveal that the dancers defy norms with brazen costumes, sensual movements, and subversive narratives, eliciting mixed audience reactions ranging from support to resistance. This dynamic interplay reveals the dancers’ bodies as an arena of struggle, challenging and redefining dominant social meanings.

Abstract

What happens when a character exemplifies the essence of nurturing, protection, and unconditional love? In the webtoon Cewekku Galak, Yoo Ah-rin emerges as a mother-like figure whose defining traits such as nurturing, protecting, and unconditionally loving profoundly shape the lives of people around her. This study will be using Carl Jung’s mother archetype theory, John Bowlby’s attachment theory, and Melanie Klein’s object relations theory to explore how these qualities foster emotional security, stability, safety, trust, and a sense of acceptance in other characters. At the same time, it reveals the unintended consequences of her care, such as emotional dependency and obsession. By analyzing the dual impact of her role, this research highlights the complexity of maternal figures in fiction and the enduring significance of unconditional love in storytelling.

Abstract

This study explores the evolution of Indonesian horror film narratives by comparing Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (1994) and its 2019 remake. The 1994 version employs a lighter, entertainment-focused approach, emphasizing traditional supernatural elements with a straightforward storyline. In contrast, the 2019 film presents a complex narrative, incorporating social and psychological themes with nuanced characters. This transformation mirrors shifting audience preferences toward more emotional and realistic storytelling. The study also examines the impact of social, cultural, and technological factors on these narratives. The 1994 film reflects local traditions and beliefs, while the 2019 version integrates advanced CGI and contemporary social issues, influenced by global trends. Technological advancements in the remake enhance its visual and emotional depth, creating a more immersive horror experience. Ultimately, the study highlights how Indonesian horror films evolve in response to technological progress, cultural shifts, and the changing tastes of audiences over time.
