Abstract

This research aims were to describe the types of presupposition used by the Parhata in Batak Toba wedding ceremony and to reveal the realization of presupposition in Parhata™s spoken words in Batak Toba wedding ceremony based on Yule™s framework (2000). In this study the researcher adapted textual analysis (Mc Kee, 2013) to analyze the data. The sources of the data were two videos of wedding ceremonies of Batak Toba. The data were taken from the script of Parhata™s spoken words during the wedding ceremonies. The current research findings showed that the existential presupposition was dominantly used in Parhata™s spoken words. As the mediator and informant in the wedding ceremony, Parhata tended to utter in positive statements. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata™s utterances was recognized according to the theme of presupposition in Yule™s framework. Moreover, the six types of presupposition found in the current research although the findings from wedding ceremony video one and wedding ceremony video two as following; 40 existential presuppositions, five factive presuppositions, two non-factive presuppositions, four lexical presuppositions, one structural presupposition and two counterfactual presuppositions. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata™s utterances was identified by the characteristics of each presupposition, such as mentioning an entity or stating contrary to the fact.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) To found out what types of verbal irony used in the novel, 2) To found out the literal meaning of the verbal irony, 3) To found out the realization of the verbal irony. The source of data was the novel, and the data were taken from the dialogue in the novel. The study conducted by using qualitative research. The data were analyzed by using Sperber and Wilson™s theory to classify the types of verbal irony. There were 13 data found and there were two types of verbal irony used in the novel spoken by the two main characters. The types were ironical understatement (92%) and ironical interjection (8%). The literal meaning and the realization of the verbal irony were known based on the context in the dialogue.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types of interactive meanings, the use of interactive meaning in illustration and phrases of two picture book biographies about Greta Thunberg and the compatibility between the interactive meaning in illustrations and phrases of two picture book biographies about Greta Thunberg, Greta and The Giants and Little People Big Dreams “ Greta Thunberg. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were taken from two picture books. The research instrument was the researcher herself by using a tool including laptop and books. The results of this research showed that in Greta and The Giants, there were thirteen types of interactive meaning with the total of 22 illustrations. As for the results in Little People Big Dreams “ Greta Thunberg, there were ten out of thirteen types of interactive meaning with the total of 13 illustrations. The total number of data were 35 illustrations and 130 phrases. Interactive meaning in Greta and The Giants and Little People Big Dreams “ Greta Thunberg were both compatible to giving information about climate change awareness.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out how film adaptation from l novel Alice Adventures in Wonderland I (1865) to the film Alice Adventures in Wonderland I 2010. In terms of addition, subtraction, and variation on its inherent elements, In the study of scientific social problems, a descriptive qualitative design is used. The researcher discovered that the film had some addition, reduction, and variation changes. These changes are also felt by the readers as a result of the film. The research findings show that there are sixteen findings for film adaptation, three findings for plot, four findings for setting, and eight findings for characters, each of which are divided into intrinsic elements of film and novel Adventures in Wonderland  I.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out the types of the taboo words expressed by characters in End of Watch Movie by identifying it and to explain the motives for taboo words expressed by the characters in the End of Watch Movie. This research utilized a theory from Jay (1992). This research utilized a design of a descriptive method which is a method for research that endeavors to depict and interpret the articles as per reality. The data of this research are in the linguistic features found in the movie. The data are quantities of English taboo words that contain transcripts in the movie. The data in this research were collected by using documentary techniques. In order to collect data, recorder technique is used as the instrument to collect the data. The technique of analyzing data will be examined by utilizing descriptive qualitative methods. The results of the research show that there are 113 data and for the taboo words type of scatology is the frequently used by the characters with the rate 23,89% and the most motive used is anger and frustration with the rate 30,09%.
