Abstract

In the history of Indonesia, two important events considered to be the turning points of National Awakening were the founding of Budi Utomo ‘Noble Endeavor’ in 1908 and that of Sumpah Pemuda ‘Youth Pledge’ in 1928. The role of young men, external factors and education are considered to be determining factors in the growth of Indonesian nationalism. However, the existence of mass media and colonial sphere also played important roles to swiftly widespread and inculcate new ideas leading to the national awareness as a mass ideology. The role of mass media in accelerating the growth of Indonesian identity from simply an idea into a reality is often underestimated. In fact, one of the many important components on the process of resuscitating national consciousness was vernacular. On the other hand, language was also a component which always imbedded in mass media. Behind the press industry during that era, there must be actors of this activity. Therefore, capital owners also indirectly took part in the growth of Indonesian nationalism.

Abstract

This paper reports the research result on the order of clauses in subordinative compound sentences in Indonesian from the syntactic and discourse perspectives. There are two types of clause orders in the subordinative compound sentences, namely, (i) lower clauses on the right side of the main clauses, and (ii) lower clauses on the left side of the main clauses. From the syntactic view, lower clauses on the right side of the main clauses may occupy the syntactic functions of O, Complement, S, and Adverbial, while the lower clauses on the left of the main clauses only occupy the function of Adverbials. From the discourse level, lower clauses on the right side of the main clauses only contain information related to the information of the main clauses and not directly connected to the information of the preceding sentence. On the other hand, lower clauses on the left side of the main clauses contain textual presupposition, i.e containing repeated information from the preceding sentence Thus, lower clauses on the left side of the main clause contain old information. The result of the study also proves the truth of Ramsey hyphotesis (1987:385) stating that lower clauses preceding the main clauses have a broader scope as compared to the preceding uterance while those following the main clauses have a more localized scope, i.e, merely related to the main clause.

The inventarisation to understand the number and status of languages dialects in East Nusa Tenggara should be conducted using the right theory and methodology. The inventarisation should be done by implementing quantitavie and qualitative approaches so that satisfactory results can be achieved in the process of inventarisation in the future. Despite the fact that there may be some weaknesses in the use of the quantitative approach to determine family language using kexicostatistics technique, the result may provide clear and reliable descriptions of the NTT family language

Abstract

It seems that cultural science has been marginalized in Indonesian development. This marginalization might be the result of the continuity of the history of science. The cultural science is considered worthless; meanwhile the natural science with its divisions are regarded as the proper science as they may be used to face the problems encountered in Indonesia. The cultural science should possess the central roles in giving the touch of humanity to every aspect of life in this nation.
