Abstract

Local architectural styles are constantly evolving due to the influence of Western architectural styles and changing social lifestyles. This study aims to identify the impact of changes in Iraqi courtyard houses on their role in improving indoor environmental quality by comparing traditional and contemporary courtyard houses. This study adopted a quantitative methodology based on field measurements. Measurements were taken for four key indicators: temperature, humidity, wind speed, and daylight intensity. The study was conducted on nine case studies in five Iraqi governorates: Baghdad, Babel, Mosul, Basra, and Al-Anbar. Two of these cases were traditional, and seven were contemporary. The results indicated that traditional central courtyards contribute to improving indoor environmental quality, with a difference of 10–12 °C between indoor and outdoor temperatures, improved humidity levels, adequate lighting and ventilation, and reduced dust and dirt. In contrast, contemporary courtyards (Al Manwar) do not have a significant impact on indoor environmental quality, as the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures in most houses does not exceed 5 °C. Furthermore, modern courtyards did not improve the humidity levels. Conversely, they provided a good amount of light and ventilation and kept the air clean from dust and dirt. This study recommends that contemporary Iraqi houses adopt the true philosophy of the courtyard and carefully consider the specifications and location of the inner courtyard to achieve the best environmental outcomes.
