Abstract

Images of Japanese troops which drawn by Pramoedya in his works indeed related with his own experiences. Pramoedya through his characters portrays his view on humanities. Pramoedya depicted the brutality of Japanese troops in their occupation in Indonesia. All Japanese propaganda delivered false messages and caused disasters for Indonesian people. Japanese culture retardation and their brutality made the author suffer and down. Even though his novels associate with anti Japanese occupation and patriotism among the youth, humanities issues in fact appear as a strong theme in all his works.

Abstract

Abstract

What is meant by contemporary literature? The first thing that comes up in mind is that the terminology of contemporary literature points out to "literature that is new" or "literature that is very recent", and constitutes a new trend lastly in touch with public. With this, contemporarity might possibly be seen or measured on the basis of time frame. In China, contemporary literature is not measured merely by the most recent time and the changing literary trend in a certain period of time, it is apparently not free from the political influence of the goverment in power. Political guidance issued by the goverment in a certain period, will define the change in the literary trend in China. Uniquely, the literary trend in a certain period not merely brings out certain themes, but also followed by a great deal of literary works representing the emerging literary trend. In China, by reading a literary work, one will easily be able to detect when that kind of literary works approximately emerged, and who were the authors producing that works.

Abstract

Don Juan is a myth about a seducer, a man with many love adventures, a women's heat conqueror, and many other predicates. Don Juan as a myth is well-known world wide over, appearing in about 50 writings such as novels, plays, operas. But a French writer Eric-Emannuel Schmitt proposes a new figure of Don Juan in his play La Nuit de Valognes (Night in Valognes): the seducer is judged by five victims and convicted to marry one of his victims in order to stop his adventures. Surprisingly, Don Juan accepts this verdict without conditions. This sudden change becomes the theme of the play: the demythification of Don Juan. A flash back scene shows the beginning of this change and the interpretations that might arise from here. One possible interpretation is proposed and discussed in this paper: Don Juan found the way to a purer love, which is the union with God, and decides to begin his journey. This play can thus be categorised as a sufi text.
