Abstract

This study explores the implementation of classical guidance to improve the learning motivation of young students at Pondok Pesantren Kyai Syarifuddin Dalem Timur, Lumajang. Unlike most Islamic boarding schools that accept adolescents aged 13 and above, this pesantren accommodates elementary-aged students, which presents unique pedagogical challenges. A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted, involving observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The results reveal that systematic classical guidance, which includes scheduled motivational sessions, reward systems, and intensive supervision, significantly enhanced students’ motivation, discipline, and participation in learning. Indicators such as punctual attendance, task completion, and classroom engagement improved markedly after the intervention. However, the implementation faced several challenges, including limited teaching creativity, difficult student behavior, and ineffective communication with parents. These were addressed through interactive learning strategies, media integration, and empathetic communication training for staff. The study concludes that classical guidance, when delivered in a structured and participatory manner, is a practical and effective approach to fostering learning motivation among young students in pesantren.

Abstract

This article explores the role of Pesantren Tahfidzul Qur’an Ar-Rahmah in nurturing a generation of Muslims who not only memorise the Qur’an but also comprehend and embody its teachings in daily life. While producing students who can memorise the Qur’an is relatively straightforward, cultivating high-quality memorizers through effective methods is significantly more critical. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach with participatory observation as its primary data collection method. The findings indicate that the communication patterns employed by the pesantren are based on the Y and Star communication models, which facilitate two-way interactions among caretakers, teachers, and students. Interpersonal communication emerges as a central element in the intensive mentoring process led by the asatidz and musyrif, who serve not only as educators but also as spiritual guides and motivational figures. The study also identifies several internal inhibiting factors that impact the effectiveness of the Qur’anic memorisation programme, such as lack of motivation, laziness, and tendencies among students to skip memorisation sessions. It concludes that the success of the Tahfidzul Qur’an programme is closely tied to the effectiveness of communication strategies and the emotional closeness cultivated through consistent and structured interpersonal engagement.

Abstract

Pesantren Kyai Syarifuddin faces a significant challenge in cultivating reading interest among its students (santri), particularly those who previously showed little enthusiasm for reading. As a response, the institution has implemented group counseling services that provide a dynamic space for discussion and experience-sharing among santri. This study aims to analyze the implementation of group counseling in enhancing students' reading interest and to identify both the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The findings reveal that group counseling is effective in fostering reading interest among santri. Key supporting factors include student discipline, encouragement from counselors, and the students’ intrinsic motivation to learn. However, several inhibiting factors were also identified, such as limited participation from musyrifin (dorm supervisors), an unsupportive environmental context, and negative peer influence. The study concludes that group counseling plays a pivotal role in establishing a literacy tradition within Pesantren Kyai Syarifuddin and contributes significantly to enhancing students’ reading engagement. Nevertheless, to achieve optimal outcomes, it is essential to strengthen the active involvement of musyrifin and improve environmental conditions that support literacy development.

Abstract

Pesantren play a strategic role in shaping students' character, particularly in fostering discipline among tahfidz (Qur’an memorization) students. One of the prominent caregiving approaches applied in the pesantren environment is the authoritative style, which combines firmness with warmth. This approach is considered effective in building discipline because it provides room for dialogue and responsible freedom for students. This article presents findings from a qualitative research study conducted at Pesantren Kyai Syarifuddin, Lumajang. The results reveal that the application of the authoritative technique by teachers positively contributes to improving the discipline of tahfidz students. Supporting factors include students’ internal motivation, effective communication between teachers and students, and parental support. The impacts of this approach are reflected in students’ increased active participation in learning activities, enhanced discipline, and the growth of stronger learning motivation. The study concludes that the authoritative approach is proven effective in fostering discipline and consistency among tahfidz students in the Qur’an memorization process, while also strengthening independent and responsible character development.

Abstract

This article investigates the strategic role of pesantren in shaping students’ character and academic capabilities in Indonesia. The study aims to analyze the influence of family support and pesantren climate on academic resilience, with self-esteem acting as a mediating variable. Employing a quantitative approach, the research utilized descriptive and inferential analysis techniques. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using path regression analysis. The results indicate that family support has a significant direct effect on self-esteem (β = 0.275; p < 0.001), and pesantren climate also has a significant direct effect on self-esteem (β = 0.289; p < 0.001). Furthermore, self-esteem significantly influences academic resilience (β = 0.256; p = 0.003). Both family support (β = 0.233; p = 0.004) and pesantren climate (β = 0.232; p = 0.004) exhibit direct effects on academic resilience. Additionally, indirect effects are identified, where family support (β = 0.070; p = 0.009) and pesantren climate (β = 0.073; p = 0.001) influence academic resilience through self-esteem. The study concludes that family support and pesantren climate are critical predictors of students’ academic resilience, operating both directly and indirectly via the enhancement of self-esteem.

Abstract

Pondok pesantren serve as comprehensive educational environments where caregivers, nyai (female religious leaders), administrators, and instructors collaborate to foster the development of students, particularly in cultivating the independence of new students. One of the approaches employed to support this goal is the application of humanistic counseling techniques. This study aims to: (1) examine the implementation efforts of humanistic counseling; and (2) evaluate the outcomes of this counseling approach in promoting student autonomy. A qualitative research method was employed, with data validity ensured through technique and source triangulation. The findings reveal that the implementation of humanistic counseling was conducted over three structured sessions. The first session focused on developing students’ self-awareness. The second session emphasized understanding personal freedom in learning activities. The third session aimed to foster a sense of responsibility for one's own learning process. As a result, students (counselees) demonstrated improved self-awareness and greater independence in managing their academic tasks.
