Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The main treatment modality for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck is by surgical wide excision. Post-excision reconstructive surgery is essential for restoring aesthetics and function. Fasciocutaneous free-flap is an acceptable method for reconstructing a wide lession of the face since the technique does not cause significant morbidity.CASE REPORT: A 41 year-old female was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (T3N0M0) of the inferior lip after achieving tumor-free margin radical excision. Reconstruction of the defect was made with radial forearm freelap followed by a three-phase refinement flap. The patient was left with a aesthetically acceptable lip without other facial morbidity.DISCUSSION: Reconstructive surgery following a widely excised tumor of the lips requires special attention because of its important physical and aesthetical role. Radial forearm freeflap causes minimal facial morbidity since the technique does not require donor tissue from the face. Other benefits include adequate tissue thickness, minimal contracture and unaltering skin color. Further refinement flaps is needed to complete the reconstruction process.CONCLUSION: Radial forearm free flap is a good choice for reconstruction a wide lession following a wide excision of lip tumor.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa worldwide need to be continuously monitored to prevent its transmission. This study reviewed multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Southeast Asia.METHODS: Pubmed database was searched (January 2013-March 2018) for relevant articles using specific names of all eleven Southeast Asian countries. The articles retrieved were screened and analyzed to meet the inclusion criteria.RESULTS: A total of 17 articles met the inclusion criteria. Vietnam had the most published data included in this study, East Timor, Cambodia, and Laos had none. There are variations among Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance in Southeast Asia. Thailand had complete data on antibiotic resistance and had the highest resistance rate of almost all antibiotics. Colistin had the lowest resistance rate among all antibiotics.CONCLUSIONS: Colistin had the lowest resistance rate among all antibiotics. Another study with more extensive data should be done to validate this study. Future research should be explicitly providing detail data results for antimicrobial resistance analyses.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: ROS is the most common cause of male infertility. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a compound which produces ROS and decreases FSH and LH levels. Continuous Multistage Countercurrent Extraction (CMCE) propolis extract as an antioxidant is evidently capable of reducing ROS concentration.OBJECTIVE: this research aims at evaluating the effect of CMCE propolis extract administration on Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of MSG-induced male wistar rats.METHODS: employing the Post Test Only Control Group Design, 18 rats were divided into 3 groups: control group, treated only with MSG (MS-G), and treatment groups, respectively treated with CMCE propolis extract at doses 8.3mg/day (CM8-G) and 10.8mg/day (CM10-G). CMCE propolis extract was given orally for 21 days. At the end of treatment, sperm and testis were taken to evaluate the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality. The sperm obtained from epididymis was analyzed using the WHO standards, while Leydig cells and Sertoli cells were counted from preparation using the HE stain method.RESULTS: the Post Hoc analysis result shows that the Leydig and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of CM8-G and CM10-G are significantly higher than those of MS-G, p<0.05. The Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of CM10-G are significantly higher than those of CM8-G, p><0.05. CONCLUSION: CMCE propolis extract administration evidently increases the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality from the perspective of the count, motility and morphology of spermatozoa of MSG-induced male wistar rats.><0.05CONCLUSION: CMCE propolis extract administration evidently increases the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality from the perspective of the count, motility and morphology of spermatozoa of MSG-induced male wistar rats.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Ocimum sanctum have been proven effective in decreasing Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH) levels, and sperm number, and also increase male testosterone levels. However, so far no evidence has been found on the effect of Ocimum sanctum leaves on the levels of estrogen, FSH, LH, and the size of ovarian anthral follicles. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of Ocimum sanctum leaves on estrogen, FSH, LH and the size of antral follicle of female Balb/C mice.METHODS: In the post test only control group design, 12 female Balb/C mice were assigned into 2 groups. The treatment group (OS-G) was given 0.08 gram of ocimum sanctum leaves, three times a day for 30 days and the control group (C-G) received no ocimum sanctum. Estrogen, FSH anduLH levels wereumeasured on the 30th day, the mice were sacrificed and taken up by their ovaries. HE preparationsuwere then madeuand HE was performed, and the size of the antral follicle of the ovary was measured .RESULTS: Mann Whitney analysisuindicateduthat estrogen and FSH levels in OS-G group were significantly higher compared to that of C-G group, p<0.05. Based on independent t-test, the level of LH in OS-G was significantly higher than that of C-Gugroup, p><0.05. On the contrary, uthe size of ovarianuanthralufollicle in OS-Guwas smaller than that of C-Gugroup, p><0.05. CONCLUSION: Ocimum sanctum increased the levels of estrogen, FSH, LH and decreased the size of ovarian antral follicle in female of Balb/C mice.>

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: UV-B exposure to the skin may produce ROS, decreasing collagen density and increasing MMP-1 expression. Longan leaf extract cream contains antioxidant and is expected to prevent decrease in collagen density and MMP-1 expression increase.OBJECTIVE: The research aims at administering longan leaf extract cream to increase collagen density and decrease MMP-1 expression in BALB/c mice exposed to UV-B rays.METHODS: This experimental research employed a Post Test Only Controlled Group Design. The subjects were 24 BALB/c mice, which were randomly divided into 4 groups. The Control Group (Ctr-G)was only administered with basic cream and exposed to UV-B rays, while Groups DLS-3, DLS-6, and DLS-13were respectively administered with longan leaf extract cream at doses 3.25%, 6.5% and 13% and exposed to UV-B rays for 4 weeks at a dose of 1 MED. On day 29, a tissue excision biopsy was performed to determine the collagen density and MMP-1 expression. The collagen density preparations were made using Masson’s Trichome staining and MMP-1 preparations were made using immunohistochemical staining.RESULTS: Kruskalwallis analysis showedstatistically no significant differences in collagen density and MMP-1 expression between groups(p value> 0.05).CONCLUSION: Administration of longan leaf extract cream at doses of 3.25%, 6.5% and 13% had proven unable to increase collagen densitynor decrease the MMP-1 expression significantly after UVB exposure.
