Abstract

The Islamic political thought has long served as a foundational discourse for governance in Muslim-majority societies, continuously adapting to evolving historical, theological, and socio-political conditions. This narrative review investigates the development and transformation of Islamic political ideologies, from classical treatises to contemporary reformist and feminist interpretations. Utilizing a structured literature search through academic databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar, the review selected peer-reviewed sources focused on themes of Islamic governance, religious authority, gender justice, and regional variations. The findings reveal that classical texts such as the Siyasatnama and the Muqaddimah continue to inform present-day governance through concepts like justice and social solidarity. Shi'a political frameworks emphasize divine sovereignty through clerical authority, contrasting with more decentralized Sunni models. Reformist thinkers like Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Fazlur Rahman advocate for contextual reinterpretation and democratic engagement. The influence of systemic factors—including colonial legacies, economic crises, and cultural diplomacy—demonstrates both the resilience and the adaptability of Islamic political thought. Feminist contributions and grassroots activism further enrich the discourse, emphasizing inclusivity and civic engagement. The review concludes that overcoming governance challenges and ideological rigidity requires educational reform, inclusive policy-making, and expanded theological dialogue. These steps are essential for ensuring that Islamic political thought remains relevant and impactful in contemporary governance. The study highlights the need for future research on digital political engagement and comparative models across global Muslim societies.

Abstract

The intersection of Islam and human rights has become an increasingly contested and vital area of academic inquiry. This narrative review aims to critically examine how Islamic jurisprudence interacts with international human rights principles, particularly in Muslim-majority societies. Using a multidisciplinary methodology, literature was collected from major academic databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, JSTOR, PubMed, and Web of Science. Keywords such as "Islam and human rights," "Sharia law," and "Islamic justice" guided the search, with inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed sources published between 2000 and 2024. Findings indicate that social determinants, economic disparities, and institutional frameworks significantly influence how human rights are interpreted and applied in Islamic contexts. Gender inequality, religious minority marginalization, and political resistance are prevalent challenges linked to traditionalist readings of Islamic law. Conversely, reformist movements advocating reinterpretation through concepts like Wasatiyyah and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah illustrate a viable pathway to harmonize Islamic teachings with human rights norms. Case studies from Morocco and Afghanistan exemplify the critical role of political will and governance in shaping rights outcomes. The review highlights systemic and structural barriers in both Muslim-majority and non-Muslim-majority contexts and offers comparative insights into potential policy responses. Legal harmonization, community engagement, education, and interfaith dialogue are emphasized as key strategies. The study concludes by calling for more empirical research and pluralistic, interdisciplinary approaches to enhance the discourse on Islam and human rights globally.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive narrative review of contemporary developments, challenges, and prospects in Islamic finance and banking, particularly within developing economies. The research aims to evaluate the sector's effectiveness in promoting financial inclusion, ethical investment, and sustainable development. Using a structured search methodology across Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ, relevant literature was selected based on thematic keywords and inclusion criteria focusing on empirical studies and policy-oriented analysis. Key findings indicate that Islamic financial literacy strongly influences investment behavior among Muslim investors by reducing perceived risk and aligning investment choices with ethical values. Shariah governance, particularly the role of Supervisory Boards, is pivotal but faces implementation disparities across countries. Product innovation in markets like Malaysia and Indonesia exemplifies the sector's responsiveness to financial modernization while adhering to Shariah principles. Moreover, Islamic finance aligns with sustainable development goals through instruments such as green sukuk and zakat, offering ethical alternatives for environmental and social financing. Systemic challenges persist, including inconsistent regulatory environments, limited public understanding, and fragmented interpretations of Shariah law. To address these, the study recommends enhancing regulatory alignment, promoting public education, and strengthening institutional collaboration. These findings underscore the transformative potential of Islamic finance in achieving inclusive and sustainable economic outcomes.

Abstract

This study presents a narrative review on Islamic feminism, examining how gender justice is conceptualized and practiced in Muslim-majority societies and diaspora communities. The review aims to identify key themes, challenges, and transformative strategies that define the Islamic feminist discourse. Methodologically, the study employed a systematic literature search across databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and JSTOR, using targeted keywords and inclusion criteria to identify peer-reviewed articles relevant to feminist hermeneutics, activism, legal reform, and gender dynamics in Islam. The analysis revealed five central themes: feminist reinterpretation of religious texts, women's socio-political activism, intersections between national identity and feminism, cultural-religious negotiations, and internal tensions within Islamic feminist movements. Empirical data from various contexts demonstrated that systemic barriers—including patriarchal state structures, conservative religious narratives, cultural norms, and legal discrimination—significantly hinder the progress of gender equality. Comparative findings across Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, and South Africa highlighted the contextual specificity and universality of these challenges. The discussion underscored the need for legal reform, inclusive education, and community-based advocacy to dismantle patriarchal systems. It also emphasized gaps in the literature, including limited attention to LGBTQ+ voices, digital activism, and ecofeminism. The study concludes that Islamic feminism requires an integrated strategy rooted in education, cultural engagement, and inclusive theology to create equitable societies.

Abstract

This narrative review examines recent methodological developments in Islamic Studies, focusing on how traditional epistemologies intersect with contemporary research practices. The study aims to analyze key innovations and contextual influences shaping the evolution of methodology in education, finance, exegesis, and environmental ethics. Literature was collected from multiple academic databases including Scopus, SpringerLink, Google Scholar, and Web of Science using targeted keywords such as "Methodology in Islamic Studies" and "Interdisciplinary Islamic Research." Selection criteria emphasized peer-reviewed works published in the last 15 years with methodological transparency and relevance to Islamic epistemology. Findings indicate a growing trend toward methodological pluralism, with themes including multicultural integration in Islamic pedagogy, expanded interpretive authority in Qur'anic studies, empirical approaches in Islamic finance, and ethical models addressing global crises. These developments reflect a significant departure from rigid traditionalism and a move toward inclusive, data-informed, and socially engaged Islamic scholarship. The study discusses how socio-cultural contexts and institutional policies influence methodological choices, revealing gaps in digital integration and participatory research. It recommends broader adoption of interdisciplinary, technology-enhanced, and community-rooted approaches. The review concludes that sustainable progress in Islamic Studies will depend on strategic reforms in educational policy, cross-sector collaboration, and an ongoing commitment to methodological innovation.
