Abstract

This research investigates Mochtar Lubis' social commentary through the editorial position of Harian Indonesia Raya, focusing on the Rene Coenrad case from October 1970 to January 1971. The death of Rene Coenrad during a soccer match between students and police cadets at ITB highlighted the underlying tensions between students and the government at the outset of the New Order period, following their joint attempt to overthrow the Guided Democracy regime in 1966. This study employs historical and content analysis techniques, analysing primary sources including headlines and articles from the Indonesia Raya newspaper. The initial section examines the socio-cultural background of the Rene Coenrad case and subsequently delves into students' reactions to it. The following section examines the early New Order government and Mochtar Lubis' role at the Indonesia Raya newspaper. The central theme of this article centres on Mochtar Lubis' social commentary in connection with the Rene Coenrad case, a crucial example of escalating student-government conflicts at the beginning of the New Order period. Exploring the complex relationship between students and the government throughout Indonesia's history is deeply captivating; students have consistently played a crucial role in moulding the nation's historical context. To fully understand the social commentary in Mochtar Lubis' editorial on René Coenrad, it is crucial to understand the portrayal of contemporary events and their underlying importance.

Abstract

Local languages are an essential part of cultural identity, but are increasingly endangered due to modernization and globalization. This study aims to develop a mathematical model based on a dynamic system to describe the revitalization of local languages in East Kalimantan. The model divides the population into four compartments: individuals who cannot speak the local language , participants in local language education , language promoters , and technology users in local language learning . The model assumes a closed population with key parameters, including the education transmission rate , transition to promotion , and the technology utilization rate . The analysis involves determining the equilibrium points, calculating the basic reproduction number  using the Next Generation Matrix method, and assessing the local stability of the system. The results show that indicates the potential sustainability of local languages, while  suggests a tendency toward extinction. Simulations reveal that increasing language promotion and technology utilization can significantly raise  making their combination an effective strategy to maintain the vitality of local languages.

Abstract

This study evaluates public perception regarding the impact of vehicle emissions on urban air quality in Indonesia, focusing on the interplay between traffic density, vehicle types, and public awareness levels. It aims to bridge the research gap concerning how specific knowledge of pollution sources and health risk perceptions mediate support for emission control policies in major metropolitan areas. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating quantitative surveys (n=500) and in-depth qualitative interviews (n=50) across high-density urban regions. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) for hypothesis testing and NVivo thematic analysis to explore the subjective experiences of respondents. Findings reveal a highly significant positive correlation (β = 0.68) between traffic density and negative air quality perception, where chronic congestion fosters a heightened "sensory sensitivity" that exceeds objective monitoring data. Despite high general awareness, a substantial "knowledge gap" persists regarding heavy-duty and freight vehicle emissions. Nevertheless, respiratory health concerns serve as a primary catalyst, increasing public support for stringent environmental regulations by 40%. The study underscores that the effectiveness of air quality management in Indonesia depends on health-centered advocacy, stringent regulations on logistics fleets, and transparent policy evaluation to enhance governmental legitimacy and public participation.

Abstract

Large capture-fisheries and aquaculture potential in Papua Province has yet to meet the reality of regional development based on fisheries, due to infrastructure gaps, limited value-added processing, weak institutions, and continuous external risks. This study assesses the regional-based fisheries potential development strategy in Papua Province to increase coastal community welfare without compromising resource sustainability. Secondary data from the period of 2003–2024 are combined with stakeholder inputs from surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions and analyzed by using a SWOT framework supported by IFAS–EFAS weighting to identify strategic priorities. The mean IFAS score revealed that internal strengths (3.27) outweighed weaknesses (1.53), largely attributed to abundant fish resources, emerging fishing/processing technologies, government support, market potential, and local wisdom of coastal areas. Results from EFAS revealed that the mean opportunities (3.16) outweigh threats (1.81), particularly export demand, progress in technology, government programs, and digital marketing prospects, although illegal fishing, overfishing pressures, climate variability, and conflict over fishing grounds remained the key concerns. The position here is in the first quadrant, denoting an area where the fishery can grow well and indicates the need to focus more on Strength-Opportunity (SO) plans involving the optimization of export-directed manufacturing, the enhancement of fish processing facilities to increase value addition to fish, and the use of e-commerce and online marketing, as well as the use of local economic institutions to improve fish distribution, and the development of networks based on local culture to ensure superior processed fish products.

Abstract

Self-medication is a practice of self-treatment that is increasingly common among the public as a response to limited access to health services, high medical costs, and the ease of obtaining medicines without a doctor's prescription. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence self-medication behavior, including knowledge, medical costs, drug advertisements, previous medical experiences, and advice from others. The research approach uses a quantitative method with a survey design. Data were collected through questionnaires from 219 respondents who had purchased drugs without a doctor's prescription, using purposive sampling techniques. Data analysis was performed using binary logistic regression. The results showed that all independent variables simultaneously had a significant effect on self-medication behavior. Partially, knowledge, medical costs, drug advertisements, previous medical experiences, and advice from others were proven to have a positive and significant effect on an individual's tendency to self-medicate. The research model has excellent predictive ability with an accuracy value of 91.8% and a Nagelkerke R Square value of 78.6%. These findings indicate that self-medication behavior is influenced by a combination of personal, economic, informational, and social factors. Therefore, continuous educational efforts and strengthening of regulations related to the use and promotion of drugs are needed to encourage safer and more responsible self-medication practices.
