Abstract

This study aims to analyze the utilization status of squid (Loligo sp.) resources and formulate sustainable management strategies in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The study was conducted in May 2025 in the waters of North Sulawesi Province, which are part of the Indonesian Fisheries Management Area (IFMA) 715. A quantitative descriptive method was employed, using secondary data obtained from reports published by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, capture fisheries statistics, and relevant scientific literature. The data analyzed include squid (Loligo sp.) catch production, the number of squid (Loligo sp.) fishing gears, and the estimated Allowable Catch (TAC) for the years 2020–2024. The research results indicate that squid (Loligo sp.) production has experienced fluctuations, with the highest production in 2024 at 1,933.21 tons, still below the TAC value of 2,712 tons; however, the utilization rate has approached the optimal limit. The relationship between the number of fishing gear and production shows a negative pattern influenced by environmental factors, seasons, and resource stock conditions. The recommended management strategies include the implementation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM), control of fishing effort, limitation of fishing gear, and the use of environmentally friendly fishing technology to ensure the sustainability of squid (Loligo sp.) resources in the water of North Sulawesi Province.

Abstract

The tuna fishery is one of the capture fisheries subsectors with high economic value and plays a vital role in supporting the economy of coastal communities in North Maluku Province. IFMA 715, which encompasses the Maluku Sea, the Halmahera Sea, Tomini Bay, and the Seram Sea, is one of Indonesia’s potential tuna-producing regions. This study aims to analyze the production dynamics and economic value of tuna fisheries in North Maluku Province, IFMA 715, as a basis for supporting sustainable fisheries management. This study employs a quantitative approach using descriptive methods based on secondary data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, scientific publications, and relevant literature. The results showed that tuna production in North Maluku Province fluctuated during 2020–2024, with the highest production recorded in 2021 (54,637.76 tons) and the lowest in 2022 (18,940.87 tons). 2021 at 54,637.76 tons, and the lowest in 2022 at 18,940.87 tons. The economic value of tuna production reached its highest level in 2021 at Rp 1,213,290 million. The dominant tuna species caught were yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) Fluctuations in tuna production and economic value are influenced by oceanographic conditions, fishing seasons, fishing effort, fishing gear, the size of the fishing fleet, market demand, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUU Fishing) activities. The required management strategies include controlling fishing effort, spatially based management of fishing areas, monitoring minimum catch sizes, and strengthening surveillance of illegal fishing to ensure the sustainability of tuna resources in IFMA 715.

Abstract

This study discusses the management of tuna (Thunnus spp.) fisheries in the Indonesia Fisheries Management Area (IFMA) 714, with a focus on the waters of Maluku Province during the 2020–2024 period. The study aimed to analyze the management of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus sp.) fisheries in the waters of Maluku Province within IFMA714. A quantitative descriptive method was employed using secondary data obtained from the Statistics Data Portal of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF). The analyzed data included tuna production, the number of fishing vessels, and dominant fishing gear types. The results showed that tuna production fluctuated throughout the observation period, increasing in 2021, declining in 2022 and 2023, and then increasing significantly again in 2024. These fluctuations were influenced by oceanographic conditions, climate change, weather conditions, fishing intensity, operational costs, and market demand for tuna commodities. The number of fishing vessels also changed from year to year, reflecting the level of tuna resource utilization in the Maluku region. In addition, the dominant fishing gear shifted from trolling lines to handlines in 2024, indicating a transition toward more selective and environmentally friendly fishing practices. The findings suggest that sustainable tuna fisheries management through the control of fishing intensity, the use of environmentally friendly fishing gear, strengthened monitoring, and data-based management is essential to maintain tuna resource sustainability while supporting the long-term economic viability of fishing communities in Maluku Province.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of mud crab resources and formulate sustainable management strategies in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. The research was conducted from April to May 2025 using a descriptive quantitative approach based on secondary data obtained from fisheries statistics, scientific publications, and relevant literature. Data analyzed included mud crab production, fishing gear utilization, and environmental conditions supporting mud crab habitats. The results showed that mud crab production in Bangka Belitung increased from 1,813.66 tons in 2020 to 3,854.27 tons in 2024, despite fluctuations in the number of trap nets (bubu) used by fishermen. Regression analysis indicated a moderate relationship between the number of trap nets and mud crab production, suggesting that production is influenced not only by fishing effort but also by environmental conditions, bait quality, and fishing techniques. Sustainable management strategies should focus on mangrove habitat conservation, regulation of minimum catch size, prohibition of harvesting berried female crabs, environmentally friendly fishing practices, development of mud crab aquaculture, and strengthening community participation. These strategies are expected to support the sustainability of mud crab resources and improve the welfare of coastal communities in IFMA 711.

Abstract

Shrimp (Penaeus sp.) is one of the most economically important fishery commodities in Indonesia, contributing significantly to the capture fisheries sector and coastal community livelihoods. Monitoring shrimp production trends is essential to support sustainable fisheries management, particularly in the Indonesia Fisheries Management Area (IFMA) 712. This study aimed to analyze shrimp production trends, production value, and estimate the utilization potential of shrimp resources landed at Jambean Fishing Port, Pekalongan, during the 2020–2024 period. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed using secondary data obtained from the Statistical Data Portal of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia. The data consisted of annual shrimp production volume and production value, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics, tables, graphical trend analysis, and average production calculations. The results showed that shrimp production fluctuated throughout the study period, with the lowest production recorded in 2022 (42.19 tons) and the highest production in 2024 (74.37 tons). Similarly, shrimp production value exhibited a fluctuating trend, reaching its highest value of IDR 3,346,695 thousand in 2024. The average shrimp production during the five-year observation period was 55.44 tons. These findings indicate that shrimp resources in the study area continue to provide considerable economic potential. However, increasing fishing activities should be accompanied by sustainable fisheries management through continuous production monitoring and appropriate resource utilization strategies to maintain shrimp stock sustainability in IFMA 712.
