Abstract

This article employs the media narratives and semiotics analytical approach to examine how Edward Snowden was constructed in online publications of the Times and the Post as two major national newspapers in the United States. The analysis finds that both media successfully construct Snowden positively as a new kind of leaker and as a hero in the sense that he brings back the importance of freedom of speech as a living myth in the United States. He is still viewed as a hero despite his moving to Russia, the political enemy of the United States. The analysis also shows that both media perpetuate the myth of free speech. They construct Snowden’s action positively as a new method to give people courage to criticize the government.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to understand the status relation and the way the text and emoji interact in musicians’ twitter posts. This research focuses on the musicians’ twitter posts containing promotion, which also include emoji and text. This research is in a form of a descriptive qualitative which uses the multimodality theory through the generalized image-text relation of Radan Martinec and Andrew Salway. Findings shows that the musicians tend to position the emoji subordinately to text. In terms of logico-semantic relation, the extension relation occurs more than the exemplification relation and enhancement relation. The emoji mostly provides additional information, which cannot be transferred with the text, such as expression and feeling. It is also used to symbolize the event they promote in the post, such as guitar emoji () in a concert promotion. The religious musicians tend to use emoji to provide information about themselves, such as feeling and expression. While, the rock musicians use the emoji more to put information about the event, such as the place and how many days left until the event begins.

Abstract

This research examines the sexual desire of Paul Morel, a male main character in the D.H Lawrence’s novel Sons and Lovers. It is a descriptive qualitative library research with the main data are the narrative and dialogues taken from the respective novel. The study aims to describe how Paul Morel’s sexual desire in the novel Sons and Lovers is constructed. It uses Freudian psychoanalysis approach to reveal the pattern of intimate relationships between Paul Morel and three most- significant women in his life: Gertrude Morel, Miriam Leviers, and Clara Dawes. The result of the study shows that Paul sexual desire is constructed by his relationship with three women characters that posit different effects to him. Paul experiences Oedipus complex when he is a child. The mother acts as the restraining force that restricts Paul from fulfilling his sexual desire with other women. Paul and Miriam’s relationship is the manifestation of the id versus the superego. There’s an endless battle between Paul’s raw desire and Miriam’s religiosity. Meanwhile Paul and Clara’s relationship is the realization of the id. The intimacy between them is solely based on pleasure principle and satisfaction pursuit.  Keywords: id, ego, psychoanalysis, sexual desire, superego

Abstract

This research examines how the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” constructs the character of Queenie as mammy stereotype and the accounts of her presence in this adaptation. By applying the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes, this research analyzes mise-en-scene examination to find the mammy stereotype constructed in the character Queenie by looking at the history of slavery in America. Then, in order to find the account of Queenie’s presence, this research uses the adaptation theory of Linda Hutcheon. Thus, this research finds that the movie constructs mammy stereotype, that has been ingrained in the history of slavery in America, in the character Queenie through mise-en-scene, specifically in the figure behavior of Queenie. Moreover, the presence of Queenie in the movie challenges the stereotype by showing the significant role of mammy in a parent's abandonment of a white child. The presence of Queenie makes this movie as a process and a product based on Hutcheon’s adaptation theory. As her presence telling the story in variation and paying tribute to the short story, the movie represents Queenie to contest the short story point of view towards black, especially a black woman.
