Abstract

This research examines the representations of African-American stereotype and the struggle of Black American girl in National Spelling Bee contest in Hollywood movie entitled Akeelah and the Bee (2006). The use of African-American English (AAVE) is one of the stereotype often depicted in Hollywood movie. Race theories are used to examine the relationship between race, racism and power. Meanwhile, Roland Barthes’s theory and semiotic film theory are used to examine the meaning portrayed in the movie. Findings show that the representation of Akeelah as a successful participant in the spelling bee competition challenges the stereotype of African American as academic underclass, and as associated with crime, failure and frustration. Akeelah is represented as a successful African American girl as she assimilates (adopts) American values of change/mobility, time and its importance, action and work orientation. The assimilation is achieved through a mentoring process and support from African American community.

Abstract

Power is one of the most wanted things in this world. Many people compete with each other for power. Sometimes, some of them use their cunning to accomplish their desire for power. When they succeed to get it, they will do everything to maintain their positions. This research explores those kinds of issues portrayed in George Orwell’s novel entitled Animal Farm (1945). Furthermore, the research focuses on the process of how hegemony takes place in Animal Farm. Antonio Gramsci’s theory about hegemony is used to analyze the data. The research finds out that from the beginning to the end of the story, Orwell’s Animal Farm shows the system of hegemony created and developed by the pigs’ group. Old Major’s speech made the animals realized their real condition and triggered the animals to rebel against their master, Mr. Jones. Even though their rebellion succeeded to expel Mr. Jones and his men from the farm, it emerged the new supremacy of the pigs. Snowball only used consent to rule the animals. On the other hand, Napoleon used the combination of consent and coercion to rule the animals.

Abstract

George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling are British authors who are different in viewing imperialism. The essays “Shooting an Elephant” and “A Hanging” by George Orwell and a novel “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling, represent imperialism as the main point. This research finds out the intention of George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling for describing the concept of imperialism. It also purposes to find out the way the authors express their thoughts in literary work as the response towards imperialism. This research applies sociology of literature approach in analyzing data and employs Alan Swingewood’s theory in digging how George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling develop their thoughts about imperialism into work. This research reveals that George Orwell and Rudyard Kipling’s works are expression of their idea that concerns not on the difference in the type of works, but on the values in each work to treat other people as human being. Through his works, Orwell shows people to do not violating others’ right. Meanwhile, Kipling introduces to children for imparting imperialism since childhood. These contradicting way describing imperialism encourage both of the authors to show their intention in supporting anti-imperialism and pro-imperialism concept.

Abstract

This research examines the construction of the enemy in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) as postmodern enemy through the portrayal of the Nazi. Applying Derrida's deconstruction theory to see how Hollywood cinematic convention is being deconstructed, the analysis shows that the Nazi are being deconstructed through the following construction: 1) wearing distinctive outfit, 2) being dehumanized as evil, 3) having different purpose from the hero, 4) being on the losing side, and 5) being racially different. The Nazi shows some qualities of not being stereotypical enemy: they are depicted to show patriotism, loyalty, and compassion. The blurry characteristics between hero and enemy shows postmodernity.

Abstract

This research focuses on the translation analysis of taboo expressions in “Deadpool 2” movie. This study aims to find out (i) the type of taboo in the movie and (ii) the techniques employed by two different translators from different platforms to translate taboo expressions. This is a descriptive-qualitative research. The sources of data in this research are the dialogue in movie titled “Deadpool 2” and its Indonesian subtitles produced by 2 different translators, also respondents to assess the translation acceptability whichh in this research called as familiarity. The data in this research are 167 data of taboo expressions found in the said movie and its translations and information from respondents concerning familiarity of the translations. The results of the analysis of the category of taboo expression shows that from 167 data there are eight categories of taboo that are identified in “Deadpool 2”. The categories are sexual references (41%), profane or blasphemous (11%), scatological referents and disgusting object (10%), some animal names (2%), ethnic-racial-gender slurs (1%), insulting references to perceived psychological, physical, or social deviations (7%), ancestral allusions (2%), and offensive slang (25%). The analysis of translation techniques employed by the two translators shows that in total there are eleven translation techniques, namely maintaining with the same lexical items, maintaining with different lexical items, mitigating with the same lexical items, mitigating with different lexical items, generalization, deletion, translating to proper interjection, euphemism, reformulation, substitution and literal translation.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the type of address terms found in an English novel entitled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The lightning thief, to identify translation techniques used by the Indonesian translator to translate the address terms, and to describe translation quality of address terms in the novel entitled Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The lightning thief. It is a qualitative study of which data are words and phrases accommodating address terms in English as source text and it’s translation as target text. The data were collected through content analysis and focus group discussion. The collected data were then analyzed based on data analysis model which is proposed by Spradley. There are 15 types of address term found in the novel. The translator uses established equivalent to translate type of address terms in the novel, such as title, generic first name, mockery name, etc. She also uses pure borrowing to translate first name, diminutive name, last name, etc. The accuracy and the acceptability of the translation of the address terms are quite high. It is a result of the application of established equivalent technique and pure borrowing.

Abstract

It is true that film as medium can represent a lot significant values in society, one of them is tolerance. It is crucial to discuss tolerance because societies have become more diverse. Therefore, exploring tolerance on films can be fascinating and useful. By using American superhero films (Fantastic 4 (2005), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and Black Panther (2018) to depict how tolerance is represented, this study offers to enhance the understanding of tolerance which has always been one of important values to have. By applying Hall’s theory of representation, this study exposes two essential points: tolerance must be conceptualized by incorporating mutualism, understanding, and peace; and tolerance shown on American superhero movies should incorporate the portrayal of race and gender.
