Abstract

This aim of this article is to find out the types of flouting maxims employed by the characters in the television show Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 5, the way the speakers flout the maxims, and to explain the reasons of the characters in the show flout the maxims using pragmatics approach.This research was a descriptive qualitative research and used a total sampling technique. The data analyzed by the researcher are all the dialogues containing flouting maxims that were uttered by the main characters in the show.By applying Grice’s cooperative principles and his theory of flouting maxims, the researcher found 27 data in total of 22 episodes of the entire season. The result shows that the way the characters flout the maxims varies, but the maxim of quality is flouted the most to create humor.

Abstract

AbstractThis research studied the onomatopoeic verb in Emma Donoghue’s novel entitled ROOM. The aims of this research were to find the translation strategies applied in translating onomatopoeic verbs that are used by the translator in the ROOM novel and to assess their quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research applied descriptive qualitative method where the data was analyzed through Baker’s theory and those called raters who have competencies in assessing translation quality. The approaches used to collect and analyze the data of onomatopoeic verbs were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. As a result, the researchers found that there are five translation strategies that are applied in translating onomatopoeic verbs. The researchers concluded that the majority of the translation strategies used in the ROOM novel involve the use of non-onomatopoeic words with similar meaning and form. The translation quality of onomatopoeic verbs is rated as less accurate and less acceptable, because of various factors that may be read in depth in this article.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the impact of the translation techniques used by the translator in The White Lady’s subtitles of Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror Game. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were obtained through document analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The theory of translation techniques used for analysing the technique in this study was proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). This research also assessed the translation quality by using the model of Translation Quality Assessment proposed by Nababan, et al (2012). The translation quality and the assessment were done through FGD with three raters. The result showed that there were 18 techniques applied in the subtitle. This study found that established equivalent affected the translation quality in positive way. Meanwhile, deletion technique gave the bad impact on all aspects of translation quality. This study also discovered the technique namely variant borrowing that was found by Dyah (2019). The average score of accuracy, acceptability, and readability respectively was 2,94, 2,96, and 2,97. Therefore, the score of the translation quality was high with 2.95 of 3.

Abstract

 This research studies about deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content. There are two objectives of this research. The first objective is to identify the types of deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content and the second objective is to analyze the referents meaning of the deixis used by McDonald’s webpage content. The research method is descriptive qualitative method with data analysis technique, that is content analysis design. The result of the research shows that there were 94 deixis used by McDonald’s web page content. The data of deixis types are classified into five types. They are person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. In this research, person deixis became the most dominant type of deixis used by McDonald’s. person deixis in addressing McDonald’s teams and McDonald’s customers. The usage of social deixis to address McDonald’s partners and the relation, discourse deixis for explaining the discourse in upcoming and prior portion about the McDonald’s content in the McDonald’s webpage. Next, place deixis is used to mention the location and the time deixis is used for referring the specific time.

Abstract

This research targets a holistic investigation of the types of politeness strategies performed by the characters in Joker movie along with their social contexts. It further aims to find the influences of movie stages (orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution) and social factors (power, social distance) to the use of politeness strategies by the characters of the movie. This study utilized a socio-pragmatics approach to investigate the social contexts and a theoretical framework proposed by Brown and Levinson (1978) to identify politeness strategies in the movie. This research was upheld using descriptive qualitative research which is underpinned by four major stages of analysis by Santosa’s (2021) model, in combination with Spreadly (1980), and Miles and Huberman (1996) ranging from domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The data of this research are taken from the dialogues that contained politeness strategies performed by the characters. The data sources come from the stages of Joker movie ranging from the orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution.
