Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels. Globally, the average age of people with diabetes is 40 years. In Indonesia, diabetes is a gap with the highest incidence in the 20-44 year age group. Southeast Sulawesi recorded an increase in diabetes cases from 2022 to 2023, and the Lepo-Lepo Health Center reported 266 cases in 2022 and 360 cases in 2023. Meanwhile, in 2024 from January to July, the 20-44 year age group had 95 cases, where hereditary factors and obesity usually cause a high incidence of diabetes. This study aimed to identify risk factors for diabetes in the productive age in the Lepo-Lepo Health Center work area in 2024. The design of this study was a case-control study with the matching method, and the number of people with diabetes was 95. Sampling was performed using the purposive method, and then the calculation was carried out to obtain 41 pairs of case and control samples. The statistical test used was McNemar. The results showed that the obesity variable had an OR of 4,250 and a hereditary history 11,000. So it can be concluded that obesity and hereditary history were risk factors for Diabetes Mellitus in the productive age (20-44 years) in the Lepo-Lepo Health Center work area in 2024. Community-based preventive efforts targeting individuals with obesity and a family history of diabetes are strongly recommended to reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus in the productive age group

Abstract

The incidence of metabolic disorders in women of childbearing age in Indonesia, especially those related to blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and uric acid levels, continues to increase. Therefore, it is necessary to identify several causal factors. This study aimed to determine the variables related to blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid levels. The types of research were observational, analytic, and cross-sectional. The study population consisted of female Tulungagung employees in the Health Office, with purposive sampling obtained 41 respondents. Inclusion criteria: aged 19-49 years, participating in Posbindu activities held at the Health Office in November 2024. This study was conducted at the Tulungagung Regency Health Office in November 2024. Data was collected by measuring height, weight, waist circumference, blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol levels, using a microtoise, weight scales, metline, and Easy Touch GCU. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression testsThe result this study, age had been shown to have an effect on blood sugar levels, and both body mass index (BMI) and excess body weight have been shown to increase uric acid levels. The BMI and weight are both within the normal range, and leading a healthy lifestyle can help prevent difficulties that are caused by metabolic disorders.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative instrument in epidemiology, markedly enhancing the capacity of health professionals to predict, monitor, and manage the dissemination of diseases. A comprehensive review indicates that AI has achieved notable success in forecasting disease outbreaks, identifying transmission patterns, and optimizing the allocation of healthcare resources. AI-driven surveillance systems, such as BlueDot and HealthMap, have demonstrated their efficacy in providing early warnings of disease outbreaks, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the deployment of AI in epidemiology encounters challenges, including data privacy concerns, resource limitations in low-income countries, and the necessity for explicit ethical guidelines. This report examines the diverse applications of AI in epidemiology, its advantages over traditional methodologies, and the challenges and future directions for advancing this technology to bolster global disease control and prevention efforts.

Abstract

Indonesia has serious smoking problems, and all elements of society must engage in the process of smoking cessation. The smoking rate in the Riau Islands was relatively high among those aged > 15 years, and consumption patterns in Tanjungpinang show a 9.15% monthly per capita expenditure on tobacco products. This study aimed to analyze policy implementation regarding Smoke-Free Areas in Tanjungpinang using eight WHO indicators: Acceptability, Adoption, Appropriateness, Feasibility, Fidelity, Implementation Cost, Coverage, and Sustainability. This study was a policy implementation analysis. Key informants were four individuals from relevant agencies related to Smoke-free Area regulation, selected through purposive sampling. Qualitative data from eight WHO indicators were analyzed through content analysis. Implementing the smoking-free area (SFA) policy in the field was not yet optimal, especially in terms of supervision and the imposition of sanctions. Therefore, efforts to increase socialization and supervision are required to implement SFA policies more effectively.

Abstract

Hypertension is a prevalent non-communicable disease in older adults that significantly affects functional abilities and quality of life. Half of the older adults had hypertension in nursing homes in West Sumatera. Caregiver support plays a crucial role as an external factor that can strengthen the motivation and ability of older adults to manage their health conditions independently. Most studies have focused on home-based care or informal caregivers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the relationship between caregivers’ social support and self-care behavior in older adults with hypertension in nursing homes. This cross-sectional study, conducted from April to August 2025 at Sabai Nan Aluih Sicincin Nursing Home in West Sumatera, included 86 older adults with hypertension (aged ≥60 years) using total sampling. Data were collected via the 20-item Caregiver Social Support Questionnaire and the 25-item Hypertension Blood Pressure Self-Care Profile (HBP-SCP), both culturally adapted and reliable. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and chi-square tests. Result: Participants (mean age 72.4 years) were mostly female (61.6%) and widowed (74.4%). High caregiver support was perceived by 53.5% of the participants. Good self-care was demonstrated by 43.0% of participants, with the highest adherence in medication use and the lowest in blood pressure monitoring and physical activity. A significant association was found between caregiver support and self-care behavior (p=0.005). Conclusion: This study confirmed a significant positive association between caregiver support and self-care in older adults with hypertension in West Sumatra nursing homes. This underscores the critical role of formal caregivers in institutional settings. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive caregiver training in technical skills, communication, and motivational strategies. Future longitudinal research is recommended to explore causality and develop targeted interventions. Fostering robust caregiver support is essential for promoting independence and improving the quality of life of these individuals.

Abstract

Baby blues syndrome, while often considered mild and self-limiting, may increase the risk of postpartum depression if left unrecognized. This study aimed to examine the association between baby blues and the incidence of depression in postpartum women. This cross- sectional study was conducted at Mutiara Bunda Hospital, Padang City, from June to November 2024. A total of 178 postpartum women were selected using simple random sampling. The inclusion criteria were women 4–6 weeks postpartum. Women with a history of psychiatric illness, current use of psychotropic medication, major obstetric complications, or neonatal death were excluded. Baby blues syndrome and postpartum depression were assessed using the Kennerley–Gath Maternity Blues Questionnaire (KBQ) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Of 178 participants, 95 (53.4%) experienced baby blues and 49 (27.5%) were identified as having postpartum depression. Among those with baby blues, 38.9% developed postpartum depression, compared to 14.5% among those without baby blues. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant association between baby blues and postpartum depression (p < .001). The findings indicate that baby blues syndrome is significantly associated with an increased risk of postpartum depression. Early identification and monitoring of baby blues are critical in preventing the progression to more severe maternal mental health disorders. Integrating baby blues screening into routine postpartum care may improve mental health outcomes in maternal health services.

Abstract

Spiritual care is a vital aspect of holistic nursing, especially in critical care environments such as high care units (HCUs). While nurses' knowledge and attitudes are thought to influence the delivery of spiritual care, there is limited evidence in HCU settings. This study aimed to explore the relationship between nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and their implementation of spiritual care in HCUs. A cross-sectional correlational design was employed, involving 30 nurses working in hospitals in Padang City. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and spiritual care practices. The Nurse Spiritual Care Therapeutics Scale (NSCTS) was utilized to measure the frequency of spiritual care practices. Descriptive statistics and chi-squared tests were applied for data analysis, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results showed that 53.3% of nurses had good knowledge, 70.0% had positive attitudes, and 60.0% reported providing good spiritual care practices. Chi-square analysis revealed significant associations between knowledge and spiritual care practice (p = 0.031) and attitude and spiritual care practice (p = 0.012). These findings emphasize the importance of enhancing nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward spiritual care through targeted training, supportive policies, and the integration of spiritual care competencies into nursing curricula.
