Abstract

Probolinggo was one of the important administrative trade cities in Java. Long before the Dutch reign, Chinese diasporas had settled along the Banger river in the east of the city bringing along with them their traditions and religion. As Probolinggo gained significance as a trading centre, most of the Chinese played important roles in the city’s trade as mediators between the Dutch and the local people. The interaction between the different races and cultures and their trading activites had fomed unique characterisitics in the homes of the Chinese. Using the qualitative method of research which is descriptive in character, this research aims to observe and describe the building pattern of Chinese homes during the Dutch colonial period in Probolinggo city as a result of trading activities and describe the influences of the different cultures in the these homes. Results revealed that trading activites and distance from the trading channel influenced the architectural form and room organization of the dwellings. The interior and decorative elements have undergone acculturation and development. Though the Colonial Dutch culture dominates other cultures in influencing the pattern of dwellings, the Chinese culture is still maintained as an identity.

Abstract

A shop-house is a simple and practical alternative residential space that can accommodate various activities from small economic scale to the combination of living and working functions. This triggers the uncontrolled development of shop-house construction so as to meet the increasing demands of users. The demand of short-time construction has caused the shop-houses to be constructed poorly with low considerations to safety, adding to misuse. This has caused fire cases in the shop-houses sacrificing many lives who were unable to evacuate from the building. Using the qualitative and descriptive method of research, this research aims to provide solutions and alternative emergency staircase designs appropriate for shop-houses in Surabaya to increase the safety of the users

Abstract

A sitting facility is an important element contributing to the effectiveness of teaching activities in a classroom. Using the quantitative and descriptive method of approach, this research takes the classroom in Petra Christian University as the research location. Main data, verbal data from informant, written dan visual documentations such as videos and photos are used as data sources. The factors to be researched from the four types of classroom chairs include aspects of dimension, material form and colour and their relevance to the user. This research aims to describe to what extent has ergonomic principles been applied to the classroom chairs in order to maintain the user’s comfort. The results of the evaluation of the four types of chair show that 77% of the Siwangi chairs could be used with comfort because they are in line with the user’s anthropometry. However, the other types of chair particularly the metal wood and Chettos chairs could only be used by 30% of the user population because the dimensions where not in line with the average user’s anthropometry.
