Abstract

A home can be more than just a house or a place to live in. A home is a place where a person can express his feelings privately (personal) and socially (public). As in Chinese traditional houses, a home can give a concrete form of significant ethical relations between the horizontal hierarchy (within the family) and vertical hierarchy (with God). The shape of the traditional Chinese house has a unique arrangement of space. The house has a wall to protect them from intruders and bad conditions. The family’s ancestor altar in the main hall which is connected to the bedrooms reveal the relationship of the family, and the courtyard represents a space to show their relationship with God. The arrangement of the living spaces show how they were reterritorializing their private and public spaces. Due to the flocking of population in Singapore, lack of space and modernity, the Chinese Singaporeans are rapidly replacing one-story traditional homes to multi-leveled apartments. Old and big extended family patterns like in the traditional Chinese houses are no longer present. They are breaking up the family into separate living units and reterritorializing their private and public space. Reterritorializing means migrating their previous territory of space and making a new territory in the new place. The examples of this phenomenon of reterritorializing of space is: putting God’s worship outside their apartment’s door or the corridor and putting the service area (kitchen) that used to be in the private area to the public area of the house.

Abstract

The concept of participation design in the interior of a therapy room for autistic behavior in children truly considers the character of children with autism and methods of therapy used so that the criteria and the embodiment of space can meet the demands of autistic children. The physical environment that is suitable with the condition of the user can bring great influence to the therapy activities. The purpose of this research is to implement the design concept of participation as the basis in designing the interior of the therapy room for autistic children. The concept of participation design is implemented in the furniture arrangement, space-forming elements and the furniture.

Abstract

The Santa Maria De Fatima Catholic Church building in West Jakarta was originally the residence of a Chinese noble around the 1900s. Although this building is used as a Catholic Church today, Chinese cultural elements are still maintained physically on the building as well as in the customs of the people of the church. The presence of various Chinese cultures in a Catholic Church makes this building an interesting object for study. This research aims to analyze and describe all the various Chinese cultures still maintained in the interior of the Catholic Church of Santa Maria De Fatima. The research method used is qualitative which is descriptive in character. The results show that various Chinese cultures are still present in the structure and layout of the building; structural elements such as beams, columns, floors, walls and ceiling; transitional elements such as doors, windows and openings; furniture as well as in the decorative elements that are similar to traditional homes and buildings in China.

Abstract

In multi-function rooms, the acoustic system usually becomes a vital issue because speech and music truly depend on sound in delivering message. The accuracy of a message and its meaning delivered to the audience increases with the quality of the acoustic system of the room. Conversely, choosing and applying the right materials for the interior elements and furnitures is truly vital in creating a good acoustic system. Results of observation in the multi-function room of Salle France CCCL Surabaya reveal the poor reverberation time and sound insulation of the room. This study uses the quantitative research method in which field data are analyzed and verified to determine the reverberation time, acoustic response and sound insulation. This process was done by using manual calculation as well as computerized calculation using the Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010 software. The process of optimizing the acoustic design system was then performed while still considering the rules of conservation buildings to achieve the optimum design solution. The results of optimization revealed that addition of new elements in the interior of the Salle France multi-function room is required that are not permanent and could be returned to their original form so that they abide by the main rules of conservation buildings. Attempts to insulate sound were done by adding new elements such as glasswool, rubber, eva sponge, sealant and acourette mat in ceilings, cable holes, keyholes, slots, and jalousies on the door to prevent sound leaks from the room.

Abstract

This study investigates the Indies cultural influences on the interior of the Emmanuel West Indonesia Protestant Church (GPIB Imanuel) in Semarang using the descriptive qualitative method. The object of the research focused on aspects of the form in which the scope of the research include the typology of the buildings, organization of space, interior structural elements, transitional elements and the interior space contents. The results showed that the church has influences from the Indies culture, which consists of the combination and the adaptation of the colonial style with the local culture and climate in Java. The Indische Empire style, which was in trend between 1850-1900s and a form of adjustment of the Dutch colonial style to the climatic conditions on Indonesia, was truly prominent in the church building.
