Abstract

Abstract

Breast Milk provides all the nutrients babies need. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months. Previous studies suggested that exclusive breastfeeding may inhibit the occurrence of ovulation/lactational amenorrhea, thus explains its use as a natural contraceptive within the first 6 months. However, factors associated with lactation amenorrhea are not fully evaluated. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and lactational amenorrhea. A cross sectional study was performed at Posyandu in palmerah, West Jakarta in September 2017. Samples of 110 mothers were selected by consecutive method. Data obtained by questionnaires were examined using univariate and bivariate analysis. Out of the studied subjects, 60,9% mothers exclusively breastfed their babies, whereas 73,64% had lactational amenorrhea. The study found that there was a significant relationship between lactational amenorrhea and exclusive breastfeeding (p= 0,000; OR= 53,85; 95% CI= 14,078-205,982. Significant relationships were also found between lactational amenorrhea and maternal age (p=0,014; OR= 5,62; 95% CI= 1,41-22,43), and with maternal education (p=0,149; OR=2,76; 95% CI= 0,696-10,95). However, there is no significant relationship between lactational amenorrhea and maternal working status and parity. The study concludes that exclusive breastfeeding (>6 months) may be used as a natural method of effective family planning to space to the next pregnancy. This study recommends extending breastfeeding until 12 months. Therefore, breast feeding should be encouraged continuously. Keywords: exclusive breastfeeding, lactational, amenorrhea

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of the main causes of patients to visit health facilities. The incidence and prevalence of ARI in Indonesia in 2013 is 1.8 and 4.5%, respectively. ARI is still among the top ranks of eleven major causes of morbidity and mortality in children under five in 2013. One of the factors that makes a person get exposed to respiratory diseases is the nutritional status. This study aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of ARI in infants at Puskesmas Kecamatan Kebon Jeruk on August 2016. Research subjects were toddlers who sought treatment at MTBS (Manajemen Terpadu Balita Sakit) health center in Puskesmas Kecamatan Kebon Jeruk. Eighty-four subjects participated in this study were selected by a consecutive sampling technique. Nutritional status was categorized based on anthropometric standards by measuring body weight age ratio. Among the subjects, 9 infants (64,3%) had bad nutrition and ISPA, whereas 49 infants (70,0%) had good nutrition and ISPA. Statistical analysis using Fisher test obtained a significance value, with a p-value of 0.754 (p> 0.05). The study concludes that there was no association between nutritional status and the incidence of ARI in infants in Puskesmas Kecamatan Kebon Jeruk in August 2016.Keywords: respiratory infections, nutritional status, toddler, Puskesmas Kecamatan Kebon Jeruk

Abstract

Obesity in adulthood is important to be considered due to its association with various diseases such as coronary heart disease. This study aimed to determine the incidence of obesity in adults and its affecting factors such as age, gender, education level, occupation, frequency of eating per day, total calories consumption per day, level of physical activity and parental obesity status. This was a cross sectional study with analytic observational approach. The study was carried out in 2016 among adults aged above 40 years old residing in Kelurahan Tanjung Duren, Jakarta. Primary data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires. Weight and height measurements were taken to assess the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the respondents. The study found that 44 (41,12%) of the respondents were obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). Chi-square analysis between obesity and independent variables showed that the incidence of obesity was negatively related to gender (p = 0.351), age (p = 0,520), education level (p = 0.352), occupation (p = 0.141), physical activity (p = 0,220), and parental obesity status (p = 0,109). Two variables were observed to have a positive relationship with the incidence of obesity, i.e. meal frequency per day (p = 0.029) and total calories consumption per day (p = 0,000). This study recommends obese adults to have healthy diet and run appropriate physical activities to reduce the incidence of obesity and avoid obese-related diseases. Keywords: Obesity, Body Mass Index (BMI), Adults

Abstract

Nasal polyps are mucosal lesions of the nasal or paranasal sinuses that can be resulted from a response to inflammatory or infections stimuli. Although the exact etiology of this polyp remains unknown,it can coexist with asthma, aspirin intolerance, ,fungal rhinosinusitis, allergy, cystic fibrosis and ciliary dyskinesia. The main symptoms are nasal obstruction and nasal discharge. Endoscopy has enhanced the diagnosis and management of nasal polyps. The initial approach is medical management. Surgical removal is performed for nonresponders to medical management. Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is nowadays a common and excellent method for the treatment of nasal polyposis. Recurrance rates are higher in patients with asthma, but precise recurrence remain elusiveKeywords : nasal polyposis, FESS

Abstract

Grave’s ophthalmopathy (GO) happens in 40% of patients who suffer from Grave’s hyperthyroidism. The underlying cause of GO is an immunology response that effects not only the thyroid but also the eyesl. Without proper management, GO may cause loss of vision. The risk of GO in Grave’s disease increases with the presence of several risk factors such as older age and smoking history. Anatomical and histological changes to the soft tissues of the orbit cause the eye to protrude (exophtalmus) which is clinically a significant sign to this disease. Proper examination and follow ups of these patients are critical to decide the management to be taken. The management would depend on the phase (active and inactive) and the severity of this disease which was chategorized from mild to sight threatening. Keywords : pathophysiology, classification, management, grave’s ophthalmopathy

Abstract

Leprosy is one of serious health problems in the world, particularly in Indonesia, which reportedly is the third highest number of leprosy cases in the world. This disease is a contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium lepra. The symptoms and clinical signs resemble to other skin diseases, so often that it is referred as the great imitator. The diagnosis of leprosy is generally established by anamnesis and physical examination. However, in certain cases with vague clinical sign and symptoms, i.e. in early cases of leprosy, laboratory examination such as microscopic, histopathologic, serologic and molecular examinations, is needed to establish the diagnosis. Keywords : leprosy diagnostic, Microscopic examination, Histopathologic examination, Serologic examination and Molecular examination.

Abstract

Cresylic acid is a common disinfectant used in hospitals. This study reported several cases where cresylic acid was used topically for the treatment of skin hyperkeratosis. Skin hyperkeratosis and plantar pedis caused by clavus were healed after application of cresylic acid for two weeks to two months. The patients did not require surgical removal of the lesion. The disease did not recur at the same location for a long period of time (one year). This may be due to antimicrobial activities of active agents in the cresylic acids such as phenol compounds or their derivates and benzalkonium chloride. However, application of cresylic acid for two weeks on a non-hyperplastic pigmentous nevus did not change the appearance of the lesion. The reported cases indicated that cresylic acid can be explored as an alternative for the treatment of skin hyperkeratosis. Keywords: Cresylic acid, active skin lesions
