Abstract

The North Sumatra backarc basin has been an important hydrocarbon province for more than 100 yrs. High grade light oils and condensates have been produced from sandstone reservoirs in the deltaic Keutapang Formation and the shallow marine sandstones of the Baong Formation. The basin has a high geothermal gradient, which is in the order of 40-50 C/km (compared to 30/km in the North Sea or Gulf Coast areas) and is a result of its position close to the subducting margin of the Indian Ocean Plate.

Abstract

Preliminary studies of existing organic geochemical data from the North Sumatra Basin, indicate that anyme of several sedimentary formations may be responsible for the sourcing of indigenous hydrocarbon reserves.

Abstract

The assessment of undiscovered oil and gas potential is a crictical aspect of oil exploration, especially in the unexplored basins, although it is also important as a basis for appraising the national’s energy policies and assist long term economic planning.
TECTONIC MAPPING IN NIAS ISLAND USING LANDSAT MSS IMAGERY Muhamad Husen

Abstract

Nias Island, is one of the best examples of an exposed subduction complex in active are system. The aim of this study was to map the structural features of this tectonically complex area, using a combination of enhanced landsat MSS imagery and ground data.
K-Ar DATING OF SELECTED IGNEOUS SAMPLES FROM THE SIBOLGA BASIN, MEULABOH AND SIMEULUE ISLAND, WESTERN SUMATRA Helen J. Kallagher

Abstract

As part of a general study of the sedimentation, structure and tectonic evolution of the northern part of the Sumatranforearc basin samples of igneous rock were collected for K-Ar dating from the eastern margin of the Sibolga Basin, and from the outer arc island of Simeulue.

Abstract

Land gravity surveys on the islands of the North Sumatra Forearc have defined regions of high fields and strong gradients, the majority of which seem to be associated with the presence of mafic and ultramafic rocks. The onshore data, obtained in the course of joint LEMIGAS-University of London expeditions, complements marine data obtained by American oceanographic institutes and allows gravity maps to be completed of the whole forearc regine.

Abstract

Low to moderate yields of well preserved Palunomorphs were recovered from the Sawahlunto Formation, Ombilin Basin, West Sumatra. More than 50 spore-pollen species have been recognised of which many have been corroborated with previously described taxa. The palynological assemblages recovered indicate an Oligocene to lower Miocener rather than Eocene age for the deposition of the Sawahlunto Formation.

Abstract

Examination of recently acquired seismic data in conjunction with data from boreholes in Pertamina Unit I area, North Sumatra has revealed inconsistencies in stratigraphic nomenclature. Sequences presently called Middle Baong Sandstone are broadly time equivalent to, and contiguous with the lower paris of the Keutopang sequence in the south of the area.

Abstract

The geological evolution of North Sumatra has been controlled by strike slip tectonics troughout most of the Tertiary. The area experienced extensional and transtensional regimers during the Paleogene, rift basins opened up between major wrench faults, and rates of subsidence and sedimentation were rapid.
