Abstract

The relationship between history and literature in Indonesia is strong and complementary, with history serving as a crucial source of inspiration for literary works. Indonesian historians and writers have demonstrated the close relationship between history and literature in Indonesian culture, where literary works often take the form of "stories" that can contain both verbal and fictional elements that lend deeper meaning to historical events. This study aims to examine how history is transformed in contemporary Indonesian literature and the aesthetic, political, and cultural purposes of these historical representations. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing the theory of New Historicism, to examine the relationship between literary texts and their historical contexts. Indonesian literature has a rich history, spanning from the Balai Pustaka era to the New Order and Reformation eras. Initially, literature was influenced by the socio-political context and presented normatively to support official narratives. However, during the Reformation and contemporary eras, history has been treated more critically and is open to various interpretations.

Abstract

During the colonial period, Indonesian society was divided into rigid social classes: aristocrats, priyayi, and commoners. The aristocrats and priyayi often collaborated with the colonial government, while the commoners, particularly farmers and laborers, lived in poverty due to exploitative policies such as the forced cultivation system. This study explores the role of literature in preserving and revitalizing a nation's cultural identity amidst colonial hegemony, aiming to illustrate its contribution as a medium for preserving values and traditions. This study uses a qualitative approach with literary text analysis as its primary method, focusing on the meaning and structure of literary works from the Dutch colonial period. Data collection was conducted using library research techniques and secondary sources such as books, scientific articles, and related documents. The study concludes that literature during the colonial period functioned as a tool of resistance and social criticism, recording the nation's history of suffering and struggle, while simultaneously building national identity and awareness. Literature created narratives that provided moral strength to the people in the face of colonial oppression and helped maintain local culture and values as the foundation of the nation.

Abstract

Literature is a multifaceted and multidimensional concept in Indonesian society. Literature is not merely an aesthetic work but also a social and political document that records the life of society during a particular period or era. This study explores the role of literature in Indonesian socio-political documentation, highlighting its significance as a cultural archive for understanding the nation's historical journey and its role in recording socio-political dynamics. This study uses qualitative research methods with a descriptive, analytical, and objective sociology of literature approach to analyze literary works as socio-political documentation. This research focuses on the structure of literary works, such as plot, characters, and setting, as representations of society's social and political realities. The results show that literature in Indonesia functions dually as both an aesthetic work and an important socio-political document. Literature records social realities such as poverty, injustice, class inequality, and social conflict, and reflects cultural changes and political dynamics from the colonial period to the contemporary era. Literary works serve as alternative accounts that give voice to marginalized groups, critical tools that raise collective consciousness, and rich sources of cultural history.
