Abstract

The development of a city can affect acculturation and agglomeration. A city that has characteristics as its own identity related to the city's image. According to Kevin Lynch's Theory, there are five elements that form a city's image, including landmarks, paths, districts, nodes, and edges. Based on the Tegal City Regional Regulation in the Regional Spatial Plan and the Tegal Mayor's Regulation in the Detailed Spatial Plan, it is stated that there are historical buildings, one of which is the cultural heritage area of West Tegal District with quite massive urban activities. However, the West Tegal cultural heritage area is starting to lose its identity, as seen from the destroyed buildings that are not in harmony with their original structure and form. So the purpose of this study is to examine the elements of city image to carry out branding of the Tegal City Cultural Heritage Area in supporting sustainable development. The preparation of the article uses a qualitative descriptive method by relying on information from literature and observation. The results of the study show that there are three components that influence the image of the area, including identity as a potential for tourism development; the existence of a spatial structure; and meaning as a perceived potential. Recommendations in conservation conservation areas are to improve public facility systems such as drainage and green open spaces, encourage community participation to become part of local conservation, and make cultural heritage areas part of city life through culture-based tourism.

Abstract

This study explores the architectural acculturation between Colonial and traditional Chinese styles as manifested in the Roti Mruyung building in Banyumas, a historic structure that reflects the intersection of two distinct cultural identities. This architectural fusion represents the socio-cultural dynamics of the colonial era and the interaction between the Chinese ethnic community and the local population. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to identify and analyze the architectural elements that demonstrate this stylistic blend. Data were collected through direct observation of the building's physical features, interviews with the building's owners and local cultural figures, and a literature review of relevant sources on colonial and Chinese architecture. The findings reveal that Roti Mruyung incorporates colonial architectural elements such as symmetrical layouts, large openings, and brick construction, which are harmoniously combined with traditional Chinese features, including ornaments, and other interior elements. This research highlights that architectural acculturation in the Roti Mruyung building is not only aesthetic but also rich in historical significance and cultural identity, underscoring the importance of its preservation.

Abstract

This article aims to uncover the background and dynamics of transportation infrastructure development in the Regentschap Pemalang during the Dutch colonial period. Transportation infrastructure is a vital element supporting community mobility. However, it has often been overlooked in Indonesian historiography, particularly in the context of hinterland regions such as the Regentschap Pemalang. This research employed historical research methods. The findings indicate that transportation infrastructure played a significant role in the social and economic dynamics of the Regentschap Pemalang. Transportation connected Pemalang with other regions, integrating it into the broader transportation network of Java Island. This strategic role underpinned the development and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, particularly land transportation. Roads and railway lines were types of infrastructure that frequently received attention from the colonial government. Nevertheless, such efforts did not always proceed smoothly due to financial constraints and economic disruptions caused by unstable economic conditions.
