Abstract

The development of contemporary architecture presents challenges to environmental sustainability and human psychological needs for connection with nature. The concept of biophilic design emerged as a response to these conditions, by integrating natural elements into the built environment to improve the well-being and comfort of users. This study aims to review and reformulate the concept of biophilic design in contemporary architecture through theoretical studies, emphasizing the importance of integrating the basic principles of biophilia that are in-depth, cross-disciplinary, and relevant to the modern urban context. The method used is a literature study through analysis of literature from various relevant sources, including journals, books, and architectural case studies. The results of the study show that the application of biophilic design principles, such as the use of natural light, vegetation, cross-ventilation, and natural forms, can improve the quality of space and have a positive impact on the psychology and productivity of occupants. By integrating biophilia principles into modern building design, biophilic design not only contributes to aesthetics, but also to the sustainability and health of the built environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the main issues faced by the Segamas Traditional Market in Purbalingga. This research focuses on visitor circulation and the layout of trading zones that do not meet the standards of a traditional market. Data were obtained through field observations, interviews, and documentation using a qualitative descriptive approach based on case studies. The research results show that narrow circulation paths, unorganized vendor zoning, and a lack of supporting facilities hinder economic activities and visitor comfort. The spatial design approach offered by the researchers includes dividing the market into three main categories: dry zone, semi-dry zone, and wet zone, based on the nature of the commodities. Additionally, technical recommendations are formulated by considering SNI standards and national regulations regarding traditional markets. The redesign of the market block is carried out to improve space efficiency, make the buildings more viable, and enhance the market's function as a sustainable local economic center. This research contributes to the discussion on the revitalization of traditional markets, relying on adaptive public policies and participatory spatial planning principles.

Abstract

This research examines the colonial architectural elements and historical values of the Landraad te Purbalingga building as one of the surviving colonial heritages in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to identify the colonial architectural characteristics applied in this building and to examine the related historical values, both in functional aspects and social symbiolism. The method applied is a descriptive literary approach by conducting field observations, conducting in-depth interviews with relevant sources, and analyzing existing documentation. The results indicate that the Landraad te Purbalingga building still retains a number of colonial architectural elements, such as high ceilings, large windows, teak doors, and minimalist-style columns, although some parts have undergone changes due to renovations and functional adjustments. Historically, the building served as a special court for natives during the colonial period, reflecting the practice of legal discrimination and social segregation. The preservation efforts undertaken to date emphasize the importance of maintaining collective memory and local identity through physical preservation as well as the historical value of the building. This research is expected to serve as a basis for efforts to preserve and utilize historic buildings in small towns in Indonesia.

Abstract

The conception of sacred and profane space, pioneered by Durkheim and Eliade, is a fundamental dichotomy where the sacred space is a separate, consecrated domain that serves as a locus for transcendent manifestation, while the profane space is the ordinary, mundane world. In Javanese mosque architecture, this dichotomy is manifested through a tiered spatial hierarchy comprising the sacred core space that requires the highest purity for ritual worship, the transitional/buffer space that mediates worldly activities supporting the worship, and the External Profane Space for purely socio-economic activities. Masjid Jami' PITI Muhammad Cheng Hoo Purbalingga replicates this functional hierarchy, yet it utilizes Chinese acculturation as a visual-cultural marker in its profane and transitional zones. Conversely, the sanctity of its core space is strictly maintained by universal Islamic theological markers (such as calligraphy and Qibla orientation), making it a model of inclusivity that expands the boundaries of profanity for both cultural and functional accommodation.

Abstract

The transformation of streets into spaces for social and economic activities reveals how residents of small towns continuously negotiate their spatial and everyday lives. Gang Mayong in Purbalingga offers a vivid example: a vehicle corridor that appears ordinary by day transforms into a lively culinary street filled with interaction and sensory experiences at night. This transformation reflects a form of spatial adaptation born from the community’s creativity and collective effort to make the most of limited urban space. Through field observation, interviews, and morphological analysis, it becomes clear how simple elements—tents, folding tables, and modest lighting—blend with an oriental-style gate to create a distinctive hybrid visual identity. Amid the vibrant night economy, this space also serves as a social meeting ground that strengthens community ties. Yet, such dynamism brings new challenges, particularly regarding cleanliness and order. Therefore, adaptive and participatory design strategies are essential to ensure that this night culinary corridor continues to function not only as an arena for informal economic activity but also as a productive public space that preserves its oriental–vernacular character as an expression of local cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the compliance level of pedestrian ways in front of Goeteng Regional General Hospital (RSUD Goeteng) in Purbalingga with architectural and urban spatial planning standards. The area has undergone significant land-use conversion, where pedestrian spaces have been transformed into informal economic zones occupied by street vendors with semi-permanent structures. This situation creates spatial conflicts between public circulation functions and commercial activities, reducing safety and comfort for users, particularly vulnerable groups such as patients, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using measurable observation, behavioral mapping, and comparative analysis between the existing conditions and relevant regulations, including Pedestrian Comfort Theory, Technical Standards for Sidewalks Ministerial Regulation of Public Works No. 03/PRT/M/2014, and the Principles of Spatial Utilization Control Law No. 26/2007. The results indicate that the conversion of pedestrian paths into vending areas has reduced the free pedestrian zone width by up to 70%, obstructed accessibility for persons with disabilities, and decreased the Level of Service (LOS) for pedestrians to category F. This reflects a violation of public space functions and ineffective spatial utilization control. The study recommends implementing a human-centered and inclusive design approach for pedestrian ways that integrates social and economic activities while maintaining safety, accessibility, and sustainability in urban environments.

Abstract

The Kotagede Mosque and Royal Tomb Complex represents Javanese–Islamic vernacular architecture, showcasing a synthesis of religious, social, and symbolic functions. This study examines the spatial configuration of gapura paduraksa, kelir, and pager as architecture element in forming the hierarchical sacred space of the complex. A qualitative-descriptive method was employed with morphological and phenomenological approaches through field observation, visual documentation, and interviews. The results indicate that these three elements function as boundaries and transitional spaces guiding users from profane to sacred zones, resulting in five spatial layers (mosque, bangsal dudha, bangsal pengapit, sendang seliran, and royal tomb) that philosophically represent the relationship between Habluminallah and Habluminannas. Architectural forms and ornaments reflect the cultural acculturation between Hindu–Buddhist and Islamic values typical of the Mataram era.
