Abstract

Digul was an internment camp built to exile those who were considered involved or sympathetic to the 1926-1927 rebellion. Those who became victims can be called homo sacer because they were arrested and exiled without going through a court process. The events in the exile to Digul were later immortalized into literary works in the form of prose, and in 2001, collected and edited by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into a book entitled Cerita dari Digul. This research aims to analyze how the Dutch East Indies government produced homo sacer in the book Cerita dari Digul. This research uses a qualitative method. The data collection technique is carried out using the literature study method, namely by careful and thorough reading of the material object. The data that has been collected will then be analyzed using Giorgio Agamben's Homo Sacer Theory. The conclusion of the research is: in Cerita from Digul, the Dutch East Indies Government produced homo sacer using a condition commonly referred to as state-of-exception. That is, a kind of state of emergency or critical situation, which in the name of this critical situation, the state in the name of safeguarding rights, then deprives rights. Those who were arrested, transported and exiled to Digul were not people who were considered dangerous, let alone had committed dangerous acts. They were arrested and exiled only because they had entered associations that were deemed dangerous to the public peace.

Abstract

"When We Were Orphans," a book by Kazuo Ishiguro, examines the complex relationship that develops between early memories and human needs. Through the use of a psychoanalytic framework, the research reveals how Banks' early life experience impacted his adult desires and worldview. Shanghai both before and during the war serves as the backdrop for the story, offering a rich context for analyzing the characters' reactions to loss and displacement. This study investigates how Banks's longings for identity, connection, and a sense of belonging are shaped by nostalgia. This article advances our knowledge of the complex interplay between memories, trauma, and the search for identity in Ishiguro's "When We Were Orphans" by highlighting the story's investigation of these topics.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of educational TikTok videos on Grade 11 students’ learning of grammar via a pretest-posttest experiment. While previous studies have been able to demonstrate the effectiveness of TikTok in increasing student engagement, there still exists little evidence indicating the effectiveness of TikTok on actual learner performance through formal graded assessments. This study is one of the first attempts to investigate the effects of TikTok as a learning tool on learner performance through a controlled experiment. Sixty-seven (67) Grade 11 students from St. Dominic College of Asia who are low-performing in English represent the population. A one-group pretest posttest experiment was used as the data collection method. In the experiment, the participants’ English subject teacher administered (via Google Meet) an online grammar test (via Google Forms) before and after exposing them to a selection of ten (10) educational TikTok videos by Filipino educational content creators. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative analysis (paired samples t-test) were used as data analysis methods. Overall, the evidence from this study indicates positive feedback as most of the students preferred this new method as compared to the traditional mind-map due to its novelty as well as the interesting features. Apart from that, the use of TikTok by familiar social media influencers demonstrates its effectiveness as a learning tool since the more students feel connected to someone, the more that they trust the person and adhere to the information given, so it signifies a better learning experience. Despite the small sample size and its exploratory nature, this study offers some insight into the possibility of integrating social media into language education. However, further work is needed to assess the application of this method with other language components such as reading, writing, pronunciation, and vocabulary enrichment.
