Abstract

Social media, particularly Instagram, has become a significant space for the formation and representation of the modern Muslim woman's lifestyle. This study aims to analyze the representation of the modern Muslim woman's lifestyle in the content of the @Riaricis Instagram account, belonging to a highly influential public figure in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative approach utilizing Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method. Data were gathered through the observation and documentation of photos, videos, Reels, Instagram Stories, and captions posted on the @Riaricis account. The analysis was conducted through two stages of signification—denotative and connotative—to uncover the myths constructed within this representation of the modern Muslim woman's lifestyle. The findings indicate that the @Riaricis account portrays the modern Muslim woman as religious, active, independent, and in tune with contemporary trends. This representation is conveyed through a blend of *syar’i* (modest) attire and modern fashion, dynamic daily activities, and visual narratives that highlight independence, happiness, and success. Furthermore, this representation reveals an ongoing negotiation between Islamic values and popular culture within the digital space.

Abstract

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is a strategic component of Nigeria’s criminal justice and national security architecture. Its transformation from the Nigerian Prisons Service to the Nigerian Correctional Service under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019 represents an important shift from a predominantly custodial orientation toward a broader philosophy of custody, reformation, rehabilitation, reintegration and non-custodial measures. Nevertheless, the public image of correctional institutions is strongly influenced by media representation, while correctional reforms may receive less public visibility than institutional crises. This study examines media representation and public perception of the Nigerian Correctional Service and assesses the implications for institutional image and correctional reforms. The study adopts a qualitative documentary research design and draws on legislation, scholarly literature, institutional publications, media studies and the author’s body of research on Nigerian correctional administration, prison reforms, national security, inmate education, drug abuse, community-based corrections, inmate classification and correctional security. Framing Theory and Agenda-Setting Theory provide the analytical foundations. Existing empirical evidence indicates inadequate media coverage of prison reforms and low public awareness of the reform agenda. The study further identifies overcrowding, awaiting-trial detention, security incidents, inmate welfare, human-rights concerns and institutional failures as recurring themes capable of shaping public perceptions. Conversely, rehabilitation, education, vocational development, community-based corrections, non-custodial measures and institutional reform may receive comparatively less attention. The paper argues that neither favourable publicity nor suppression of criticism can create sustainable institutional legitimacy. Rather, institutional image should emerge from demonstrable performance, transparent communication, accountability and evidence-based reform. The study recommends specialised correctional journalism, stronger NCoS–media relations, proactive disclosure of verified information, strategic communication, digital misinformation monitoring, public reporting of reform outcomes and greater media visibility for rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
