Abstract

This project analyses a novel by Amy Chua entitled Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. The aims of the project are to make a summary of the novel by exposing the difference between Chinese and American parenting system and revealing the implicit opinions of the society in the novel about the Chinese and American parenting system. The method that underlies this project is cultural heritage method by Helaine Ruggles, D Fairchild The methods used in this study are library research and. The analysis shows that in this novel the writer represents the Chinese parents with Chinese parenting system and compares with the American parenting systemthat later creates society’s opinion.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of the chronic mental disorders. Patients of schizophrenia cannotcommunicate with others properly. Also, they cannot produce good utterances syntactically andsemantically. This is caused by their language dysfunction. In this research, I am interested inanalyzing language dysfunction in schizophrenia. I choose Toni Blank‟s utterances in “ToniBlank Show Session One” as the object of my research. I focus on how schizophrenic‟s languagedysfunctions are classified and how these dysfunctions are being analyzed using linguisticframework. To analyze the data, I used Thought, Language, and Communication (TLC) scaleand cohesion coherence frameworks. The purpose of this study is to give linguistic analysisabout phenomena of language dysfunctions uttered by Toni Blank in “Toni Blank Show SessionOne”. The data used in this research are utterances which contain language dysfunctions fromthree episodes in “Toni Blank Show Session One”, entitled “Valentine Day”, “Teroris”, and“Sehat Ala Mas Toni”. I used purposive sampling to collect the data. In analyzing the data, I usedPadan and Agih methods by Sudaryanto (1993). To interpret the data, I used cohesion andcoherence framework. In 26 utterances which contain schizophrenic‟s language dysfunctions in“Toni Blank Show Session One”, I find that the language dysfunctions which are uttered by Toniare poverty of content, tangentiality, loss of goal, circumstantiality, illogicality, incoherence(word salad), neologism, clanging, echolalia, and self-reference. Poverty of speech, pressure ofspeech, distractibility, derailment, stilted speech, perseveration, and blocking are not found in thedata.

Abstract

This book review is written to find the strength and the weakness in Angela’s Ashes which iswritten by Frank Mc Court. “The Book Review of Angela’s Ashes” is focusing on the content ofthe novel finding the strength and the weakness. The strengths are theme, character setting, and moral value, the weakness is the end of the story. The plot conveys how the author describes allsituations in this novel clearly and the main character shares readers about how to face the worldand he shares lot of values in his life as poor boy. The weakness is the end of the story. Mc Courtdoes not give explanation about how is the novel continuity. This novel conveys about how to bea person that always keeping strong for this life and there are so many moral values in this novel.

Abstract

“Til It Happens To You” is a song by Lady Gaga. The lyrics and the musicvideo tell about the story of women who have been raped in their college life.The purpose of this study is to analyze the elements of the poetry in the lyricsand to show the readers the psychological contents as portrayed in the musicvideo. The study is limited on two aspects, which are textual and contextualaspects. Figurative devices and dictions are used to analyze the textual aspects;meanwhile the contextual aspects use psychoanalysis theory. Library researchis done to compile the data. The finding of this study is psychological impactstoward the rape victims, which are reflected in the lyrics and in the music videoof “Til It Happens To You”.

Abstract

Twitter is one of the media used by people to share their thoughts, to communicate, and torespond to others. Since Twitter users tend to communicate using spoken language, we canfind some new words created in order to make the communication more comfortable.Thepurpose of this study is to identify the word formation processes on twitter statuses ofIndonesian dangdut singers. This study uses Non-Participant Observation Method to collectthe data along with Reflective Introspective Identity and Translational Method to analyze thedata. The finding of this research shows 35 words from 11 twitter accounts that were analyzedin terms of the process of word formation. The processes that occurred are Derivation,Blending, Borrowing, Clipping and Acronym. Of these processes, borrowing is the mostcommon process of word formation found in the twitter statuses of dangdut singers becausethe singers tend to follow trend from Western since the borrowing words are mostly fromEnglish.

Abstract

Nightcrawleris a crime-thriller movie directed by Dan Gilroy. The movie is about an ambitious videographer who sells violent footage of accidents and brutal crimes to the local news TV. The focus of this study is to analyze the motivation of Louis Bloom, the main character in the movie, using Abraham Maslow’s theory of needs. This theory is illustrated in a shape of five layered pyramid which represents every need that must be fulfilled by human. Those needs are physiological needs, safety needs, love or belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. The result of the discussion shows the five phases of theory of needs reflected in Lou’s life.

Looking for Alaska tells about changes and experiences which encountered by the protagonist while seeking his Great Perhaps. The novel also conveys what it means to love and to lose someone. After reading this review, the readers could understand this novel clearly and thoroughly.

Abstract

This research shows that there are word formation processes on Kaskusfor communications. The background of the research is that there are a lot of people who are confused when they visit Kaskusfor the first timebecause of the new words formed by the kaskusers. The purpose of this research is to describe the word formation processes that happen on Kaskus, so that the non-kaskusers­who visit Kaskus will have knowledge about the words the kaskusers talk about. Thetheoretical framework used in this research concerns word formation process as is proposed by some experts like O’Grady (1996), Katamba (1993), and Hatch and Brown (1995). This research is descriptive research and it uses qualitative approach. The data in this research are posts in 2015 and taken directly from Kaskus using documentation, observation and interview method. The writer also uses note-taking and SimakBebasLibatCakap(SBLC) technique to support the methods used in the research. The result of the research shows that there are some word formation processes used on Kaskus by kaskusers, such as reduplication,back formation, clipping, blending, compounding, derivation, borrowing, coinage, initialization, and conversion, and initialization process is quite productive among other processes found on Kaskus.
