Abstract

The era of the 1920s, or often referred to as 'The Roaring Twenties' can be regarded as one of the golden era of the United States after World War I. The result of the golden age was a lifestyle of the women known as 'flapper'. Flapper can be identified by the way they dress and carry themselves, two of which are bob haircut and slim black dresses. Flapper lifestyle is one of the subcultures of the United States is still remembered until today.The writing of the thesis is aimed to identify and analyze flapper’s culture in The Great Gatsby movie produced in 2013. To obtain the desired result, the writer usestextual method with library research as data collecting method. The writer will use definitions and characteristics found in a book titled Flappers: a guide to an American subculture written by Kelly Boyer Sagert. Through analyses in this thesis, the writer concludes that as a long faded American subculture, the culture of flapper still can be seen in The Great Gatsby movie.

Abstract

This thesis will discuss patriotism acts reflected by the characters of the movie ARGO. The movie tells about Tony Mendez a CIA agent who tries to save the staff of U.S. Embassy hostage in Iran by making a fake movie entitled ARGO. The objectives of this thesis are to describe the intrinsic aspect which covers the narrative elements and cinematic elements on the movie ARGO and explain the extrinsic aspect which covers the patriotism acts performed by the characters of the movie, especially Tony Mendez, John Chamber and Leister Siegel based on Patriotism theory by Igor Primoratz. The writer uses library research in collecting the data and uses sociology of literature approach. The result of this thesis find John Chamber, Leister Siegel and especially Tony Mendez showed modern patriotism by saving the six staff of U.S. Embassy in Iran from Iran militants. Meanwhile Iran militants represent group of people who have extreme patriotism.

Abstract

It is often done as a result of, for examples, despair, depression, mental disorders, bipolar disorder, alcohol dependence or drug abuse. The factors that also causes suicide include financial difficulties or problems in interpersonal relationship. Efforts to prevent suicide among other things are by limiting access to firearms, caring for mental illness and drug abuse, as well as improving economic conditions.

Abstract

“Girl with a Pearl Earring” adalah novel karya Tracy Chevalier yang mengangkatkisah tentang seorang pembantu rumah tangga yang melawan majikannya untukmempertahankan kebenaran dan kehormatannya. Hal yang menjadi fokus utamapengkajian novel ini adalah identifikasi stereotype dan peran sosial pekerja kelasbawah (dalam hal ini pembantu) dan simbol perbedaan status yang dilawan olehtokoh utama dalam novel sehingga menimbulkan konflik antara pembantu danmajikan. Untuk menganalisis pokok masalah tersebut penulis menggunakanmetode kontekstual dengan pendekatan sosiologi berdasarkan teori StereotypeSimbol dan Status. Teori Status yang akan diterapkan dalam proses pengkajiannovel adalah teori Max Weber. Tujuan dari pemilihan topik ini adalah untukmengidentifikasi perbedaan status antara kelas atas dan kelas bawah serta konflikstatus yang dapat ditimbulkan. Dari hasil analisis pengkajian konflik statustersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa tatanan stereotype suatu kelas sosial yangberlaku dalam masyarakat berhubungan dengan perbedaan status dari anggotakelas sosial tersebut. Hubungan sosial ini tidak selalu dapat berjalan dengan baikkarena akan ada saatnya terjadi konflik ketika salah satu kelas sosial melakukanpenyimpangan stereotype dan peran sosial yang menjadi pembeda status seseorangdengan yang lain.

Abstract

Construction area is a place where many kinds of people meet and work as their profession. As a multilingual country, Indonesia not only has many tribesbut also languages. Mostly, Indonesian people use their first language in daily communication. However, in certain moment, they switch or mix their utterances. This study is conducted in contruction area of Paltrow City in Tembalang. The author uses Sadap method in which recorded the speech uttered by the peopleusing a note taking technique. Then, it also uses Padan method to analyze the collected data.In this research, the author finds the phenomena of code switching and code mixing that happen in construction area. Factors that influnce code switching are participant, situation, topic, and the function. Code mixing in this research often happens when they have difficulty in finding appropriate word in Indonesian.

Abstract

this journal analyzes Marxist feminism, domination, alienation, class struggle, and revolution that exist in novel Mockingjay, especially in regards to Katniss Everdeen as the main character. This character is so interesting to be analyzed because the character represents the idea of Marxist feminism. The main purpose of this journal is to understand more about Marxist feminism in Mockingjay. This journal uses sociological approach. The theory used in this study is Marxist feminism. The result of this study is the analysis of intrinsic elements and extrinsic elements of prose. There are some intrinsic elements discussed in this thesis, such as character, setting, conflict and allegory. Moreover, the extrinsic element is the analysis of Katniss Everdeen as the main character in novel Mockingjay who represents the effort of Marxist feminism. It provides a description of domination, alienation, class struggle, and Marxist feminism. In conclusion, this thesis provides a discussion about Marxist feminism and its process, especially in regards to Katniss Everdeen as the main character.

Abstract

Novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of sequential story. Kaleidoscope is a novel for adults that talks about the journey of life. This novel is written by a famous novelist Danielle Steel. In this novel we can see a lot of tragedy and drama, the characters are a little bit over the top but the overall story of this novel always makes us curious about the ending of the story.

Abstract

This thesis analyzes David Baldacci’s novel entitled The Winner. The purposes of this thesis are to explain about the cause of psychopathic disorder, the characteristics of a psychopath, and the effect of psychopathic disorder. The methods that are used in this thesis are library research and psychological approach. This analysis shows the cause of psychopathic disorder of the antagonist, those are childhood harassment and bullying. He has the characteristics of a psychopath: glibness/superficial charm, grandiose sense of self-worth, need for stimulation/proneness to boredom, pathological lying, conning/manipulative, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of empathy, and early behavioral problems. Then, the effect of his psychopathic disorder is not only for himself but also his surroundings. In summary, this thesis shows that psychopathic disorder brings bad impact not only for the sufferer, but also his surroundings. It is shown from how the psychopathic disorder ruins the sufferer’s personality and gives impacts on how he acts towards his surroundings.

Abstract

Pertumbuhan jual beli online (e-commerce) di Indonesia saat ini berkembang sangat pesat, termasuk pertumbuhan website berbasis C2C. Di Indonesia, terdapat 3 situs jual beli online terbesar berbasis C2C yang iklannya cukup gencar ditayangkan di televisi. Dari ketiga website tersebut, Bukalapak adalah website jual beli onine yang paling banyak diakses orang untuk transaksi online. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu makna denotasi, makna konotasi dan pesan yang disampaikan oleh iklan Bukalapak sehingga menarik orang untuk mengaksesnya. Iklan yang saya analisis adalah iklan yang ditayangkan di televisi pada awal tahun 2015 hingga awal tahun 2016, antara lain iklan Bukalapak edisi Batu Akik dan Paket, iklan Tokopedia edisi Isyana vs. Gangster, dan Iklan Elevenia edisi Raisa ketemu Preman. Metode yang digunakan dalam menganalisis iklan tersebut adalah interpretative qualitative. Analisis dilakukan dengan menginterpretasikan setiap iklan dengan teori semiotik Roland Barthes. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa orang lebih tertarik untuk mengakses website yang memberikan konsep aman daripada website yang menyediakan banyak pilihan barang maupun harga yang lebih murah.

Abstract

This thesis discusses women’s oppression in Jordan Belfort’s memoir entitled The Wolf of Wall Street. The purposes of this thesis are to explain the forms of women’s oppression and the causes of women’s oppression in the memoir. In order to achieve the desired result, the writer uses library research to collect data and sociological approach by emphasizing feminism theory and oppression theory to analyze the data. The analysis shows the oppressed women, the forms of oppression, and the causes of oppression. Through the analysis, the writer concludes that there are three forms of oppression suffered by women and the cause of the oppression is financial dependency.
