Abstract

The article examines the evolution of cooperative relations within a French competitive cluster located in the Paris region, the ‘Systématic’ cluster. He questions the importance of geographical proximity as a basis for setting up and developing knowledge transfers. From an exhaustive list of labeled RandD projects within the cluster, between 2005 and 2015, the article verifies this hypothesis and confirms Krugman's analyzes and Feldman on the importance of externalities to understand the phenomenon of collocated activities. But the article also highlights the importance of non-spatial proximities (organizational, institutional and social) to understand the dispersion of companies outside the cluster and draws some lessons for the industrial policy of competitiveness clusters.

Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in a country’s social-economic development. Unfortunately, they are restricted in accessing the capital they require to function effectively in the construction industry. This study investigated the situation from the perspective of contractors operating within the construction industry in Ghana. The quantitative approach to research was adopted using survey questionnaires. With a response rate of 48 percent from 400 questionnaires distributed, the paper gauges the perception of construction firms on the financing constraint and the factors contributing to such constraints. The Chi-Square test was employed to ascertain whether there existed significant differences between the personal and organisational characteristics of firms and financing challenges. The challenges associated with financing of construction firms are multifaceted. To a large extent, the financial class of construction firms was related to their financing constraints. Efforts to mitigate the problem need to be addressed holistically. Perhaps, it is about time consideration is given to establishing a specialised bank for construction. Such a bank would understand the peculiar nature of the construction industry to be able to handle the associated risks. The government, and interested development agencies, has a role to play in ensuring the success of such bank.

Abstract

Both Indonesia and Malaysia seek to enhance the competitiveness of their micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by including internationalization goals in their respective national development plans for these enterprises. In this respect, there are some important questions, namely how do MSMEs in these two countries penetrate the external market, including the ASEAN market? What are the policies and institutions that have enabled them in their internationalization attempts? This study seeks to answer these questions by using an analytical framework that combines the stages, network and international new ventures theory as well as policy and institutional support, to investigate several case studies in Indonesia and Malaysia. The case study approach is used to provide richer and deeper insights into the internationalization journey of MSMEs in Indonesia and Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews based on the same analytical framework are used in both countries’ cases. The cases are chosen based on the companies’ willingness to be interviewed from a list of exporting MSMEs provided by the relevant government agencies in each country. The findings from the 14 case studies in the two countries indicate that exporting may be a serendipitous discovery for most of the cases as few are born global in intent. Shifting to intentional exporting will require entrepreneurs to have the vision to do so and to be able to implement the vision by tapping into government and/or private networks to connect firms with international buyers.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide framework and key issues relevant for research on social responsibility of family business. From providing two theoretical approaches towards social responsibility such as social capital concept commenting on the familiness as a family firm resource and capability; and the stakeholder theory we move to the state of the art of family business. Then, we discuss heterogeneity among family firms show how it can determine their corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach. We also refer to family cohesion to show the role of the nature of exchange systems on the nexus of family and business systems. Following this unique feature, we provide some basic family firm characteristics (family involvement, ownership and influence) and we aim to outline how these characteristics determine social responsibility in family business by referring to the relevant literature. We summarize by suggesting the inward orientation of socially responsible behaviors among family firms, where family is a stakeholder at stake. As a result, non-economic goals matter in long term meaning preservation of family ties or transgenerational value creation.

Abstract

It is hard to find official annual data and government’s comprehensive reports on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Bangladesh. Moreover, the country does not have a uniform national definition of MSME, and the definition has changed overtime in different industrial policies announced by the government in different years. Therefore, in this country focus, instead on one official source of information, it is based on various sources, including selected journal articles, papers and survey data from various agencies such as the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the International Consultancy Group (ICG) of the United Kingdom (UK) and the Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
