Abstract

Implementing differentiated instruction (DI) has become imperative, particularly with its integration into the Kurikulum Merdeka in Indonesia. It is an approach that customizes instruction to cater to students' needs. This study aimed to unveil the general perceptions of pre-service English teachers regarding DI, explore their understanding and practices within the framework of DI, and identify challenges in its implementation. This study applied a quantitative approach with a survey research design with EFL pre-service teachers as the participants. The research employed a structured questionnaire as the primary instrument and substantiated each item through validation procedures, including Cronbach's alpha analysis. The findings showed a comprehensive overview of pre-service English teachers' general perspectives on DI that influence their practical application of related techniques. These insights contributed to a deeper understanding of the efficacy of DI and informed pedagogical practices, teacher preparation programs, and curriculum development. This research divulged the crucial role of pre-service English teachers' perceptions in implementing DI in teaching and learning contexts. Additionally, the study highlighted challenges pre-service teachers face, such as time constraints, limited resources, and large class sizes, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to address these challenges. The outcomes of this study were expected to inform related parties about the significance of tailored instruction in fostering effective and inclusive instruction environments to reach educational goals.

Abstract

As an aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, university learning has been significantly impacted despite the need to adapt to technology to support online learning. Nonetheless, it is essential to recognize that online learning can pose various challenges, including learning loss, which can affect the decline of students' knowledge and skills. The present study was aimed at identifying (1) the types of platforms used in online learning and (2) the symptoms of learning loss experienced by students during online learning. The study was quantitative-qualitative research with a mix-method approach. Data collection was carried out using observations, online surveys (Google form), and interviews conducted in 2021. Data were collected from 70 students of Indonesian Language and Literature Education class of 2020 Yogyakarta State University. Data analysis used quantitative-qualitative analysis. The results showed that the types of platforms students use include WhatsApp, Zoom, UNY Be Smart, Google Meet, Google Classroom, Powtoon, Geneally, Padlet, Quiziz, and Jamboard. The Whatsapp was the most widely used platform. However, online learning that provides many benefits also caused symptoms of learning loss in online lectures. The symptoms of learning loss experienced by students were lecturing while doing other activities, no one responding to the lecturer's questions, turning off the camera during lectures, and passive discussion presentations. The findings suggest that lecturers should increase their supervision and engagement, create a more engaging learning environment, and encourage active participation from students.

The data is analyzed inductively through the process of description, interpretation, and explanation. The research findings show that the orientation of language choices made by Papuan dialectal Indonesian Instagram account owners leads to four (4) patterns of language variation, namely: (1) patterns of Papuan dialectal Indonesian (IDP); (2) patterns of Indonesian (IL); (3) patterns of code-switching of Papuan dialectal Indonesian-Foreign Language (IDP"FL); (4) patterns of code-mixing of Papuan dialectal Indonesian and foreign languages (IDP↔FL). The results of this study illustrate that there is a variety of Papuan dialectal Indonesian (IDP) among young Papuans on social media. With these findings, people can find out about the context of language use in society, especially on Instagram. Abstract

This study investigates the motivation of polyglots to learn multiple languages, a topic not extensively studied in literature. It focuses on the role of motivation as a stimulus triggering consistent behavior in learning a foreign language, offering a unique perspective on this phenomenon. Purpose: The present study examines the diverse motivational backgrounds of polyglots and investigates the relationship between these motivations and the multilingual acquisition of foreign languages by polyglots. The study involved five informants who participated in semi-structured interviews, utilizing a descriptive case study approach for data collection. Results: The results demonstrated that the four main reasons why polyglots learned numerous foreign languages were: (a) enjoyment; (b) social interaction; (c) career advancement; and (d) intellectual pursuits. Prior studies have mostly shown that people who are studying foreign languages do so primarily for academic, professional, and social reasons. Apart from the three reasons, polyglots learned multiple languages for their own enjoyment. This is the main justification for their dedication to long-term multilingual education. Conclusion: The results of this study advance our knowledge of the motivations behind multilingual polyglots' acquisition of foreign languages. It is envisaged that language learners will successfully acquire numerous foreign languages by adopting or modifying the research participants' motives. To sustain kids' desire to learn foreign languages, educators, parents, and policymakers can think about, select, and construct engaging language activities as well as appropriate language teaching approaches.

Abstract

Up to the present time, the public is more familiar with the figures of Kartini, Dewi Sartika, and Cut Nyak Dien as icons of Indonesian women emancipation fighters. In reality, for hundreds of years before Kartini was born, in the 7th century, the Kingdom of Kalingga has been led by a woman, Queen Shima. Not much of the historical data has recorded her name and roles. In the midst of this condition, there were published two novels which enumerate the way of life of Queen Shima, entitled Putri Kalingga (Wibidharma, 2022) and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga (Nararosa, 2010). The present study is aimed at understanding the existence of Queen Shima as a pioneer of Nusantara feminism by using the perspectives of feminist literary approach. The study was qualitative feminist research. The data sources of the study were the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan: Pesona Kebajikan Maharatu Shima dari Negeri Kalingga. Data were the narratives that tell about the characteristics and way of life of Queen Shima as King of Kalingga Kingdom which contain information about her position and roles in Nusantara women history. Findings of the study show that Queen Shima, whose life story is told in the two novels Putri Kalingga and Avatar Keadilan is not only a fictitious character, but also a historical figure from the 7th century, who is hauled up as King of Kalingga Kingdom not because of inheriting the crown from her parents, but because of the intelligence, wisdom, and leardership capacities she has. In the perspectives of feminist literary criticism, Queen Shima represents Nusantara feminisim that has been practiced in the era of the Kalingga kingdom.

Abstract

In the 21st century, education aims to develop research writing skills for critical thinking, emphasizing creative, collaborative, and communicative thinking skills in all programs. The study aims to gather information about a variety of studies discussing critical thinking skills in Indonesia using content analysis in many scientific language education journals published in Indonesia. This study used content analysis. Data were obtained by collecting papers that had been published in language education publications across Indonesia from 2016 to 2023, reading carefully, classifying based on the research instrument, and data was analyzed using classical content analysis technique.  The results of this study, there have been more publications over the last three years that highlight critical thinking abilities. The majority of the research design used in those papers was quantitative. Furthermore, the most targeted subjects and materials were "language acquisition" and senior high school students in their tenth grade. The most widely used data analysis technique and instrument were the t-test and the test. The study suggests future studies to enhance critical thinking skills by expanding research writing options, selecting appropriate data collection instruments, validating findings, and using precise data analysis methods.
