Abstract

Children's literature has a big role in determining the development of a child's personality to reach maturity. One type of children's literature packaged in digital form is electronic stories, such us Nussa dan Rara series. The purpose of this study was to describe and interpret the prophetic value of children's literature from Nussa dan Rara series as a medium for character learning in children. The research method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative method. The research data was taken from Nussa dan Rara series, especially from the episode Gratis Pahala. Data collection in this study was carried out by (1) recording, (2) transferring in written form, and (3) classifying the data. The data analysis technique was content analysis with the help of Kuntowijoyo's prophetic literary theory which consists of humanization, liberation, and transcendence. The results of this study are the discovery of representations of humanization in children's lives, liberation in the perspective of inclusion, and transcendence between children and religiosity. Humanization in this story is sensitive, caring, patient, and forgiving. Liberation can be seen in terms of equality between children with disabilities and normal children. Children with disabilities have the right to receive good and not arbitrary treatment from the surrounding community. The value of transcendence appears in the form of the teachings of the Prophet and the Qur'an.

Abstract

This research develops a language learning gamification model based on the needs analysis of teacher candidate's workshops on Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs). This research used research and development (R&D) method using Kemp's Instructional Design Model, the data analyzed qualitatively from primary data sources include document analyses of reputable books and relevant journal articles. This research revealed that Quizizz's incorporation into pedagogical workshops replaces traditional paper-based quizzes with interactive games, indicating heightened engagement among adults when gamified learning. Each item is accompanied by clear instructions and employs diverse modes like images, videos, or audio to enhance comprehension. This multimodal approach motivates students by facilitating the integration of textual and visual elements in their learning process. Incorporating reviewing designed games, such as Quizizz, in preservice teachers' workshops for SpLDs is a highly inclusive accommodation. The use of diverse multimodalities and carefully designed questions is essential for ensuring inclusivity and accessibility. This approach shows promise for improving student engagement and addressing the needs of learners with SpLDs.

Abstract

This article aims to identify the diction (word choice) of fictional and scientific terms created by the author in the science fiction novel The Chosen One. This novel constitutes one of the seven novels (Heptalogy of the Gamers of Galaxians) composed in serial form. The writer can create new words (neology) in the science fiction genre. According to Dejika's theory, language can keep developing through creating works in the science fiction genre. Based on the diction used by the author, the depiction of the spatial aspect of the colonial discourses can be observed. The method used in this study is the descriptive-analytic method. The result of this study shows the findings of word choice commonly used in various fields of science, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and anthropology. The author fails to build science fiction discourse because no new concepts are created in his novel. The discourse of Western Ideology remains to be present without any significant resistance. This happens because the author prioritizes Western discourse as a solution, namely the discourse represented through the past established in high sophistication.

Abstract

This research investigates (1) types of culture-specific items (CSIs), (2) translation techniques applied to CSIs, and (3) translation ideologies employed by the translators of Eka Kurniawan's novel Cantik Itu Luka into its English (Beauty is a Wound) and Russian (Красота – это горе) translations by Annie Tucker and Marina Izvekova, respectively. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies 110 CSIs based on Newmark's classification and analyzes translation techniques through Vinay and Darbelnet’s framework and Venuti’s ideologies of foreignization and domestication. The findings reveal that the culture-specific items (CSIs) identified in the novel fall into several categories: material culture, social culture, organizations, customs, ideas, activities, procedures, concepts, ecology, and gestures and habits. In translating these CSIs, the English version predominantly employed borrowing (39%), amplification (19%), and generalization (13%) techniques. Meanwhile, the Russian translation primarily utilized literal translation (35%), borrowing (28%), and amplification (16%). The English translation's preference for borrowing and amplification techniques aligns with a foreignization ideology, introducing Indonesian culture to English-speaking audiences with minimal alteration. Conversely, the Russian translation leans toward domestication, favoring literal translation (35%) and borrowing (28%) for cultural adaptation.

Abstract

Children’s picture books apply a levelling system to adjust linguistic complexity according to the reader’s developmental stage. Despite having constitutive elements of text and images, their interdependent relationships within this system receive less attention. While the relationships of texts and images in picture books have been extensively studied, there is still a gap in understanding how these relationships adapt across different reading levels. Applying Halliday’s systematic functional linguistics (2004), Kress and Leeuwen’s multimodal approach (2021), and Nikolajeva and Scott’s approach to picture books (2006), this research qualitatively and quantitatively examined thirty-four text-image pairs from two children’s picture books at low and high reading levels. This study aimed to reveal whether such an adaptation exists and, if so, to what extent. The findings confirm that an increasing complexity in text-image relationships. The lower-level picture book exhibits three types of text-image relationships: enhancing, complementary, and counterpointing. The higher-level book, however, shows four types, incorporating a contradictory relationship alongside the other three. These findings suggest that the increasing complexity in children’s picture books occurs not only in linguistic aspects but also within multimodal relationships between texts and images, highlighting the need for picture book authors and educators to design or select picture books that progressively introduce multimodal complexity.

Abstract

Second language learning is becoming a research trend. Unfortunately, there was a lack of research that sketched this field. In filling this gap, this study aims to map the research trends in second language learning in Scopus. This study was conducted by bibliometric analysis involving research articles on second language learning in 2013-2022. The data were collected from Scopus. The data were analyzed using the VOSviewer application to visualize research trends. The current study found that research clusters focused on students (motivation and emotions), second language learning, and linguistics elements (word, lexicon, and speech). Research focuses on school-based second language learning. Over the past decade, second language learning has combined education, psychology, neurology, and technology. From 2017, second language learning publications rose considerably. The United States has published the most second-language acquisition articles over the past decade. The United Kingdom is the second country with the most publications. Five of the ten top countries originate from the Europe, two from North America, and the remaining two from China and Hong Kong. The results benefit teachers in teaching, students in the learning process, and researchers in investigating second language learning.

Abstract

Speech errors can occur due to language activation and competition in the human brain as a symptom of language friction. Many researchers have studied the language friction and published their findings, indicating that the study about this issue is interesting to conduct. The current literature study aims to review previous research on language friction in terms of methods and linguistics theories applied in those studies. A systematic method was used in this research to select research articles on the language friction, and resulted in 17 articles to be reviewed. Those articles are published in Scopus indexed journals. It is found that in the last seven years, studies on language friction have shown an increasing trend, indicating that this issue is still relevant to study. In addition, most of them indicate that language friction has been analyzed based on psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics theories. However, it is not enough to study language friction from psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives, but also needs to be studied from ethnosociolinguistic perspective. This literature study can help educators and English language learners to choose learning methods by considering the language friction experienced by learners. Furthermore, by understanding the language friction, speech participants can overcome misunderstandings in communication.
