Abstract

This research aims to describe the forms of grammatical units of euphemisms and dysphemisms, and the backgrounds of euphemisms and dysphemisms uses in Spiegel Online. The data were collected through reading and note taking. The resultsshow that the forms of grammatical units of euphemisms and dysphemisms in Spiegel Online consist of words, phrases and sentences. The backgrounds of the use of euphemisms in Spiegel Online are: 1) to avoid the use of words which can cause panic or anxiety; 2) to mitigate speech; 3) to diminish or tone down a painful evocation or tragedy; 4) to engage in diplomacy or rhetoric purposes; 5) to replace forbidden words, taboos, vulgar or negative imaged-words; 6) to hide something; 7) to respect or appreciate others; and 8) to tease or criticize others smoothly. Thebackgrounds of the use of dysphemisms in Spiegel Online are: 1) to constitute taboos, improper, or immoral matters; 2) to show one’s dislike or disagreement; 3) to give negative description; 4) to show anger or irritation; 5) to scold; 6) to show disrespect;7) to mock; 8) to exaggerate or overstate; 9) to criticize; and 10) to show trivial matters.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the affixation process, semantic change in the formation of derived verbals, and the functions that such verbals can serve in Javanese sentences. It employed the descriptive approach. The data were collected from sentences the Djaka Lodang magazine and spoken discourse in society. They were collected through reading, listening, and recording. The data were analyzed using the substitution method. The findings show that derived verbals in Javanese can be formed using prefixes N-, maN-, ka-, ke-, di-/ dipun-, and bawa ha, infixes -um- and -in-,suffixes -i, -a, -en, --an, -na, -ana, and -ake/-aken, confix ka-/ -an, and combined affixes N-/ -i, N-/ -ake, N- / -a, N- / -na, N-/ -ana, di-/ -i, di- / -a, di- / -na, di- / ake, -in-/ -an, -in-/ -ake, -in-/ -ana, and -um- / -a. Derived verbs in Javanese can be both active verbs and passive verbs. They can function as subjects, predicates, objects, complements, or adverbials in sentences.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the daugterhood reality in Gadis Tangsi, a novel by Suparto Brata. The reality covers two aspects, i.e. (a) a relation pattern between a mother and her daughter, and (b) the construction of the child character’s identity in relation to the mother character. The data source was Gadis Tangsi, a novel by Suparto Brata. The data were collected through intensive reading and recording and were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive technique. The findings show that the dauhgterhood reality is apparent in the relation of Raminem – Teyi and that of Putri Parasi – Teyi. Teyi is a reflection of a young woman who tries to rebel against values in an army boarding house environment. She is much influenced by Raminem (her mother) and Putri Parasi. They directly form her identity. They inculcate ideology to make her a different girl from the rest in the environment. The relation between the mother and her daughter in this novel serves as a means of constructing Teyi’s identity.

Abstract

Halilian is a prose or story presented in a relaxing situation or leisure time. The Angkola community’s social reality, local wisdom, socio-cultural values, and ideology reflected in the Halilian text can be revealed through a systemic functionallinguistics study. This study tries to reveal the social construction, comprising men’sand women’s positions and roles in society. Human relations and life nuances due to the relations vary, depending on the problems that each actor encounters. Human beings have problems related to family and society. The findings show that in the Angkola culture: (1) it is necessary to pay a visit to parents wherever one lives because this has effects on life, (2) one must keep promise, (3) there is still a belief in spirits, and (4) the husband-wife interaction is a one way interaction, with the husband’s power being stronger than the wife’s.

Abstract

This article presents two points, i.e. postcolonial forms and patterns in Tempo, especially those in the section of literary book reviews. The study focused on the literary book reviews in Tempo published in 2000 – 2007. The data were collected through document analysis and were analyzed using the content analysis and qualitative descriptive technique. The findings are as follows. First, postcolonial themes in some literary book reviews in Tempo talk about: (1) stories of the Orient, (2) colonialism, (3) reviews of Western literature (including works translated into Indonesian), and (4) literary works talking about postcolonial matters. Besides, some reviews are related to: (5) Indonesian literature translated into English, (6) the encounter of the West and the East in several stories, and (7) Islam in the West. Second, the reviewers are aware of postcolonial patterns in the form of literary book reviews.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the improvement in the learning of appreciative short-story listening through a cooperative learning strategy. It employed an action research design. The data were those of the implementation of the learning of appreciative listening, which included pre-listening, listening, and post-liste ning stages. The data collecting instruments consisted of an observation guide, accompanied by a tape recorder and field notes, and a rubric for the analysis of the appreciative listening results. The findings showed that the cooperative learning strategy was effective in the whole learning process of listening. The students attained a mean of 91.6 (very good) at the end of Cycle I and a mean of 93 (very good) at the end of Cycle II.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) develop an instrument to measure politeness in Indonesian, (2) conduct a small-scale tryout of the instrument, and (3) develop the instrument into a book. The research subjects comprised Indonesian speakers consistingof students, university students, teachers, lecturers, and other speakers classified on the basis educational background, age, sex, geographical location, and ethnic group. The data were collected through FGD, tests, and interviews. The data were analyzed using the qualitative and quantitative descriptive techniques. The findings show that polite speech acts can be classified on the basis of the topics and functions. Formal face-to-face speech acts can be those in teaching and learning, formal meetings, other academic topics, traditional ceremonies, transactions, negotiations,and public services. Degrees and characteristics of politeness are attributable to a variety of factors.

Abstract

Children’s literature in Indonesia contains good values or akhlakul karimah which are useful for their education and the elements are relevant to their cognitive, psychological, and language developments. This study aims to identify and find out values of akhlakul karimah in the themes of children’s novels in Indonesia in 1921 – 2010 based on the structural approach and values of akhlak from the Islamic perspective. This study employed the qualitative descriptive method using the content analysis. The results of the analysis on the themes of children’s novel in 1921 – 2010 show that the dominant theme is friendship.
