Abstract

Teaching English for Specific Purposes in the age of technological innovation necessitates a new strategy for communicative contexts that incorporates technology into the teaching and learning process. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach is considered a suitable approach in which students not only understand the content and context of situations that are practiced following the actual conditions in the industry but are also expected to be fluent in two-way communication. This study aims to develop an LMS-based communicative teaching material with the CLIL approach. Using the Research and Development method by applying the ADDIE model, 60 students were involved as the research subject, two lecturers were observed and interviewed, and three expert judges evaluated the quality of the communicative LMS-based materials developed. The results show that the developed materials were of excellent quality, with a mean score of 4.98 from the three expert judges, and the students have perfect perceptions towards both the LMS's features in English learning materials and the use of the CLIL approach in English learning materials. Pedagogically, it is advised that if internet access is unavailable, the lecturers figure out a means to get over last-minute obstacles.

Abstract

Rooted within structures of patriarchy and modern life, gender equality seems still far from achieved. Providing social issues like gender inequality, literary works become reliable proof to portray subordination or discrimination against women. Thus, this study aspires to strive for women empowerment and re-educating men expectantly to tackle the problems of gender inequality. Desy Anwar's Growing Pains is interlaced with gender issues in five chapters. This research aims to unveil a range of gender conflicts and the efforts of the female main characters to overcome the hardships in life. Descriptive criticism is employed as a method of analysis. Following Lazar's Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (2014), the linguistic data in the form of lexical choices, phrases, and clauses are first identified based on the language features indicating gender inequality or violence. Eckert and McConnell-Ginet's language theory (2013) is applied in unraveling the details of linguistic evidence. Then, interpreting the discursive logic is correlated with the cultural realm of the novel Hence, the findings yield that all the selected lexicons, phrases, and clauses of the novel construct the meanings of gender issues. Socio-cultural experiences represent forms of gender-based violence such as asymmetrical family systems, misogynistic practices, gender-identity threatening, deviant female promiscuity, and cruel motherhood portrayal. The symbolic and psychological impacts are also identified, referring to post-patriarchal regimes. Although there seems to be effortful survival in masculine domination, both internal and external factors are in support of constructed gender inequalities. Eventually, all the female characters are demonstrated as the vulnerably subordinated subjects of neoliberal hegemony. This research fervently aims to recall the awareness of symbolic gender violence due to ongoing powers that halt the emergence of gender equality and reshape it into hegemonic strategies. Keywords: hegemony, inequality, misogyny, patriarchy, symbolic violence

Abstract

Stereotypes have often been associated with negative outcomes such as discrimination, prejudice, and bias. Nonetheless, this study investigates the potential for humour within stereotypical discourse in a sitcom. Through an analysis of humorous language used in sitcom, this research aims to uncover ways in which stereotypical utterances might bring about laughter as an outcome. Using the data from seven U.S. sitcom Will and Grace episodes throughout the eighth season, I generated the data from the show's transcript. I analysed how two characters, a white American woman and her maid, communicate with each other with a content analysis approach to categorize the different themes of humour presented in the seven chosen episodes. To determine of what is considered to be humorous utterances, I used the audience's laughter as the marker (Messerli 2016). The research demonstrated that the use of stereotypical humor involves exploiting the preconceived notions about another party's country of origin, physical appearance, and cognitive capacity. Further, my findings showed that an individual with higher power often performed stereotypical humour towards that with less power, while Holmes et al. (2003) saw humour as a linguistic technique for people who lacked power to establish a favourable image of themselves by challenging authority. Ultimately, this research promises to advance our understanding of the complex relationship between humour, stereotyping, and societal attitudes.

Abstract

The study investigates English as a second/foreign language (L2) learners' integrative motivation and its influence on their L2 speaking achievement. It employed a survey method and used speaking test scores to measure L2 speaking achievement. 188 Indonesian L2 learners from non-English departments participated in this study. This study was conducted to fill the gap in the motivation literature which underrecruited L2 learners from non-English departments and lacked quantitative studies involving a sufficient number of such participants in the Indonesian context. Using descriptive statistics on SPSS, the study found that learners generally reported a high level of integrative motivation. Their motivation to make friends with native English speakers was slightly higher than their motivation to learn about native speakers' cultures and to be involved in native speakers' communities. Through bivariate linear regression, the study found that learners' integrative motivation did not influence their L2 speaking achievement. These findings suggested despite integrative motivation being established in L2 literature, it did not always translate into motivated behaviours. This also calls for a re-examination of some pedagogical practices orienting towards native speakers and their cultures.

Abstract

This research explores the intricate phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing within the realm of bilingual aphasia patients who converse in both Sundanese and Indonesian. This research is essential to understanding the code-switching and code-mixing phenomenon to improve rehabilitation and effective communication for these patients. Employing a descriptive-qualitative methodology, this study aims to shed light on the language dynamics exhibited by these individuals. To this end, data were meticulously gathered through participant observation in everyday communication, supplemented by in-depth interviews conducted with family members and language therapists. The findings from meticulous data analysis illuminate that aphasia patients fluently alternate between Sundanese and Indonesian, frequently engaging in code-switching and code-mixing when grappling with linguistic expression or comprehension difficulties. Furthermore, this language phenomenon manifests in the patients' inclination toward employing shorter and simpler sentence structures. Consequently, these results underscore the importance of accounting for language selection, code-switching, and code-mixing within the language therapy process for Sundanese-Indonesian bilingual aphasia patients. Language therapists are urged to comprehend and adapt to the patients' flexible language utilization while devising tailored therapeutic strategies to enhance their linguistic proficiency. Moreover, this research calls for future investigations to explore this captivating phenomenon across diverse cohorts of bilingual aphasia patients, thus broadening our understanding of the intricacies involved.

Abstract

As a distinct field of research, so-called transfemininity studies can be used for the purposes of creating strategic coalitions and exploring specificities and differences. This study aims to explore the life journey of Arjuna (Juno), a man who is also a trans feminist, through the perspective of masculinity studies. The sub focuses of this research include: 1) transfemininity, physical transformation 2) and socio-psychological transformation. This research is interpretive qualitative research that verbally narrates data in the film Memories of My Body which was broadcast in 2019 as the data source. The results of the study show that Juno as the main character is caught between past trauma, his profession as a Lengger dancer, his sexual orientation and being liked by other men. Not yet finished making peace with himself, the people around him also add to the chaos with the end of his return to the beginning, trans-feminity – masculinity. Gender and sex as the other side of the coin are simple constructs, so future studies should be carried out to provide additional insights into the gender identities that have been internalized, reproduced, and possibly opposed by 'women' in everyday life in the social environment.

Abstract

The need for improved language education approaches is critical given the current globalized world's growing demand for English language competency. Barriers based on language might prevent people from communicating and limit their chances. The goal of this study is to address the urgent need for creative and practical approaches to teaching foreign languages in order to enable students to get the language proficiency necessary for success in a globalized and multicultural society. The study explores effective teaching strategies in teaching and learning English as a foreign language, drawing insights from the movie "The Ron Clark Story." The research examines the alignment between the teaching strategies depicted in the movie and existing literature, specifically focusing on cognitive thinking and behavior. The research findings emphasize the significance of engaging in active social interactions, critical thinking, research, and evaluation to promote cognitive growth and improve language acquisition. The movie effectively showcases the positive impact of teaching strategies such as modeling, positive reinforcement, and structured learning on students' behavior. These findings imply that educators can implement these strategies to enhance cognitive growth and language learning and create a positive and engaging learning environment for English language learners in the classroom. The movie is a valuable resource and inspiration for educators seeking innovative approaches to teaching English as a foreign language. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on effective teaching strategies and their impact on cognitive thinking and behavior in the context of English language education.

Abstract

Research on how to utilize students' ability to master the foreign language especially in memorizing some words in a target language is believed very important. The purpose of the study is to assess the ability of native Papuans in memorizing some English vocabulary using the keyword system strategy of a selected translated Sentani folktale, entitled The Legend of Sentani Lake. Data was obtained from around 32 students who were asked to memorize several target words. The result showed that students' keyword system strategy was useful in connecting the spelling, pronunciation, and new words to their prior knowledge by looking at the similarity between the target word and keyword in sound using the key-word system strategy. It is also showed that Papuan EFL students have a high ability to utilize existing knowledge and memorable relationship to memorize new or currently studied English vocabulary. The findings provide important insight for foreign language teaching and learning regarding the importance of encouraging students to develop their ability to master the language being learned by connecting it with something close to the context of Papuan native students' live in order to make it more effective and meaningful.
