Abstract

The critique of hadith matn is relatively rare among muhaddithin compared to their efforts in hadith isnad critique. This is not without reason, as they believe a hadith of the Prophet cannot be considered authentic without a chain of transmission connecting it back to the source, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A well-phrased statement that aligns with Islamic teachings cannot be regarded as a hadith if the chain of narrators linking it to the Prophet is not found. Conversely, a sound isnad has no value if the matn cannot be substantiated. This paper aims to elaborate on the evolving methodology in the critique of hadith matn. This study will discuss various aspects underlying this evolution, including the crucial role of matn critique in ensuring the integrity and authenticity of hadith. Through a historical approach and critical analysis, the research will explore how scholars have developed new methods to assess the validity of hadith matn and the implications of these approaches on hadith sciences as a whole. Additionally, the paper will identify the challenges faced in the application of matn critique, such as overcoming subjective biases and maintaining a balance between isnad and matn critique. By examining the views of both classical and contemporary scholars, this research will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of matn critique methodology and its relevance in the modern context. This study aims to offer deep insights into the importance of hadith matn critique and encourage further research in this field, thereby enriching Islamic scholarship and strengthening the understanding of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Abstract

The study of ethics, particularly from the perspective of hadith in a modern context, is crucial as it represents the second source of Islamic teachings after the Qur'an. An ethical study from the hadith perspective is relevant for understanding Islamic moral teachings and their application in daily life. Hadith, being the second source of Islamic guidance after the Qur'an, provides profound and relevant ethical guidance for various aspects of life, including addressing moral and social challenges in the modern era. The importance of studying ethics from the hadith perspective becomes more urgent when related to the situation in Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country currently undergoing reforms in politics, economy, social, and cultural spheres. These reforms are a response to the economic crisis that triggered a political crisis, with moral crises such as corruption, collusion, and nepotism often seen as primary causes of these issues. In this context, understanding and applying the ethical values found in hadith can significantly contribute to restoring morality and integrity in society. This paper aims to explore how ethical teachings from hadith can be applied to address the moral and social challenges facing Indonesia today. Through text analysis of hadith and social-political context, this research will examine how hadith principles can help address moral crises and strengthen reform efforts across various sectors. This paper is expected to provide insights into the relevance of hadith ethics in the modern context and its contribution to solving moral issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper explores the political thought of Imam Khamenei, focusing on Islamic political philosophy, the concept of Vilayat-e Faqih, and its relationship to true democracy. Imam Khamenei, as the leader of the Iranian Islamic Revolution and a staunch proponent of Vilayat-e Faqih, offers profound insights into political governance based on Islamic teachings. The paper will first explain Imam Khamenei’s Islamic political philosophy, emphasizing principles of justice, Sharia-based leadership, and the central role of scholars in governance. It will then discuss the concept of Vilayat-e Faqih, the principle of clerical leadership with authority to govern society based on Islamic law. Vilayat-e Faqih is a crucial foundation of the Iranian political system and central to Imam Khamenei’s thought. Next, the paper will explore the relationship between Vilayat-e Faqih and true democracy from Imam Khamenei’s perspective. Although it appears different from Western democratic concepts, Imam Khamenei argues that the Islamic political system implemented through Vilayat-e Faqih can embody the principles of true democracy by emphasizing popular participation and the enforcement of justice. Through a thorough analysis of Imam Khamenei’s political thought, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Islamic political philosophy, the concept of Vilayat-e Faqih, and the principles of true democracy interact and influence one another within the framework of contemporary politics.

Abstract

This article aims to explore various issues surrounding the establishment of the Mushaf ‘Uthmani. This research reveals many intriguing aspects worth highlighting, from the perspectives of the Companions, scholars, and orientalists. The Mushaf ‘Uthmani, the official version of the Qur’an compiled during the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan, has often been the subject of debate and in-depth study. The Companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who were direct witnesses to the revelation of the Qur’an, had diverse views on the compilation and writing of this mushaf. Some Companions fully supported this process, while others raised criticisms and concerns. Both classical and contemporary scholars have made significant contributions to interpreting and understanding this codification process. They explore the historical, theological, and philological aspects of the establishment of the Mushaf ‘Uthmani, influencing how Muslims view their sacred text. Additionally, Western orientalists have long been interested in studying this process from a critical and academic perspective. Their approaches often differ from traditional Islamic views, sparking dynamic discussions and debates among academics. This study not only delves into the history of the establishment of the Mushaf ‘Uthmani but also considers its implications for the development of Qur’anic studies, from both the internal perspective of Muslims and the external perspective of orientalists. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this paper offers a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and dynamics surrounding the establishment of the Mushaf ‘Uthmani, while also opening up space for further discussion in the future.

Abstract

This paper aims to highlight the capacity of Imam al-Shafi’i as a hadith scholar, with a specific focus on his views regarding the status of hadith ahad and its use as evidence. Imam al-Shafi’i, as one of the prominent imams in Islamic history, made significant contributions to the development of hadith science and usul al-fiqh. His views on hadith ahad—i.e., hadiths narrated by only one or a few transmitters—are crucial for understanding the methodology of evaluating and accepting hadith within Islamic tradition. This study will outline Imam al-Shafi’i's perspective on the status of hadith ahad within the context of Islamic law and its acceptance as a valid source of legislation. Imam al-Shafi’i recognized the value of hadith ahad in certain situations and contexts, and his opinions often serve as a reference in determining whether hadith ahad can be used as a legal basis. The paper will also discuss how Imam al-Shafi’i assesses the evidentiary strength of hadith ahad and the principles he employs in evaluating its authenticity and authority. Through text analysis and historical interpretation, this study will explore Imam al-Shafi’i's contributions to the understanding of hadith ahad and its implications for Islamic legal practice. Additionally, it aims to highlight the relevance of Imam al-Shafi’i’s views in the modern context and how his perspectives can enrich hadith studies and contemporary Islamic legal applications. This paper is expected to provide deep insights into Imam al-Shafi’i’s position in hadith science and his role in establishing the criteria for accepting hadith ahad as evidence in Islamic law.

Abstract

This paper will explore the foundations of Islamic teachings related to science, and provide contemporary examples of contributions by Muslim scientists. This brief introduction will discuss how Islamic epistemology maintains the essence of spirituality, an aspect often absent in Western epistemology. Islamic epistemology, as an integral part of Islamic teachings, offers a unique approach to knowledge that integrates both spiritual and rational dimensions. In this context, knowledge is not only seen as the result of logical and empirical processes but also as something connected to deep spiritual and moral understanding. Islamic teachings emphasize that knowledge should align with spiritual and ethical values, leading to a more holistic understanding of the world and human existence. The paper will also highlight the significant contributions of Muslim scientists in various fields, including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, and social sciences. Contemporary examples from the works of Muslim scientists will demonstrate how the principles of Islamic epistemology are applied in their scientific practices. By examining the relationship between spirituality and knowledge in Islamic epistemology, this paper aims to offer insights into how this perspective can enrich our understanding of science and its contributions to modern society. It is hoped that this paper will provide a comprehensive overview of the relevance of Islamic epistemology and its impact on the development of knowledge and contemporary scientific thought.

Abstract

This paper explores the topics of tawhid and destiny, examining the relationship between Allah and humanity. In this discussion, several important questions arise, such as: To what extent does the power of Allah the Almighty relate to human actions? Do humans have freedom in their actions, or is everything predetermined by Allah’s will, making humans like puppets that do not move without the puppet master’s direction? Has Allah predetermined the course of human life from the beginning? And is the fate of humans, both good and bad, already decided by Allah, with humans merely living out their destiny? Other relevant questions include whether the determination of entry into paradise or hell is an divine decree. Through analyzing these questions, this paper aims to explore the dynamics between Allah’s power and human freedom, as well as its implications for our understanding of destiny and moral responsibility.
