Abstract

Aim: to know the timpanometric values in normal adults at the H.Adam Malik General Hospital Medan.Method: the study design was a descriptive research. This study obtained 142 people (284 ears) who meet the inclusion criteria. Data collection was done through physical examination of the ear with otoscope and hearing assessment with timpanometer.Result: The results showed from 142 sampel (284 ears) were found mean Vea 0,9672 cm3 with standard deviation 0,254, mean Peak Ytm : 0,533 (mmhos) with standard deviation 0,244 and mean Tw : 56 (daPa) with the standard deviation 16,63.Conclusion and Recommendation: The current study suggest normal adults may reguire gender, age and ras values when implementating a quantitative approach in tympanogram interpretation.

Abstract

Aim: To know Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Values in LBW infant at H. Adam Malik General Hospital Medan.Method: A descriptive case-study was conducted in 32 LBW infants who meet the inclusion criteria. Data collection was done through hearing assessment with Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).Result: From 32 LBW infants (64 ears), eight babies (25%) presented alteration in the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) test. There is a significant association between gender and ABR result, but there is no significant association between other variables and DPOAEs nor ABR result. Conclusion and Recommendation: DPOAEs and ABR can be used as an early detection tool of hearing loss in LBW infant, even though this study found no significant association in most of the variables, which may be due to the small sample size. Keywords : DPOAEs, ABR, Low Birth Weight Infant, Hearing Loss.

Abstract

Aim: To determine the correlation between noise exposure levels and noise-induced hearing loss in employees ( case study of discotheque A, B, C in Medan).Method: This study used analytic cross-sectional study design. The data obtained through interview process, otoscopic examination and pure tone audiometry.Result: The noise-exposed employees (>85 dB) were 110 people (100%). Audiometric examinations towards the inclusion-fulfilled criteria employees were 51 (46,6%) non hearing-impaired employees and 59 (53,6%) hearing-impaired employees. Conclusion and Recommendation: There is a significant correlation between noise exposure levels and hearing function in employees of several discotheques in Medan. It is important for the employees to protect their ears. Keywords : Noise-induced hearing loss, employee, discotheque.
