Abstract

This study is aimed at developing mind mapping strategy to improve the tenth-year students’ writing ability at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Mambaus Sholihin Gresik and focused on solving the problem of how the students generate and organize ideas for writing a topic. The design of the study is collaborative classroom action research. Both the researcher and his collaborator work together in cyclic activities – planning, implementing, observing and reflecting on the data gained from the teaching and learning process – which runs into three cycles, each of which covers four meetings. The findings show that by implementing mind mapping with the proper model developed, the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text improves. It is indicated by the improvement of the percentage of the students achieving the score greater than or equal to 65 and of the percentage of the students’ involvement in the writing activities during the implementation of mind mapping in the instructional process in Cycle I, II, and III. The improvement of the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text can be reached but it should follow the procedures of the proper model of mind mapping developed.

Difference mutual understanding between dialect interchangeably is not evident as shown by only 10% of the difference. Thus, it seems that there is good mutual understanding between speakers of four dialects of Kaili’s language. Ledo dialect seems to have higher level of understanding, this is not a suprising as Ledo is situated in the middle of the Palu Valley.

Abstract

The objectives of the present study are four-fold: (1) to identify the types of strategies to maintain proficiency used by teachers of English in Indonesia, (2) to know the intensity of use of the obtained strategy types, (3) to measure the inter-correlation in the use of the obtained strategy types, and (4) to investigate the effect of proficiency level on the use of maintaining strategies. The subjects were 93 teachers applying for S2 degree in 2010/2011 at the postgraduate program of the Islamic University of Malang. They were given two sets of instrument, a Likert-scale questionnaire of English proficiency maintaining strategies and a TOEFL test. Then, a factor analysis identified nine strategy categories, including language focusing, metacognitive and affective developing, reading and writing activating, language resource utilizing, cognitive processing, culture learning, social communicating, text analyzing, and radio listening strategies. These strategy types explained 63.84% of variances of maintaining strategies and they were used at high level of intensity. Moreover, the use of the nine strategy types were found to be inter-correlated with one another. Finally, no significant effect of proficiency level on strategy use was found, indicating that teachers with different level of proficiency reported using the same strategies of maintaining their proficiency.

Abstract

Bertold Brecht’s anecdote If Sharks Were Men tells us about the life in the sea between sharks and little fish. Sharks teach the little fish about moral and their obedience to sharks. If they always obey to the sharks, they will have better future. This anecdote describes the political elite as sharks. They are being described as people, who are thirst of authority, but on the other side teach the ordinary people about “moral”. The ordinary people are being described as little fishes, that can be easily influenced and dominated. In this work, Brecht places himself as Mister K, the narrator, who lucidly describes the character of the ruler or political elite and the ordinary people. He makes three important points as a reflection of the life at that time. Firstly, the political elite always use the other people for their personal and group interest without feeling guilty, or in other words, public deception has already become a trend for political elite. Secondly, the ordinary people can be easily influenced to follow what Brecht calls in his work as “moral teaching”. Thirdly, the character of political elite always deceive and ignore the people and the helplessness of the people in dealing with the ruler is seen in this work as a reflection of the loss of ethics as an orientation and of their powerlessness in enjoying their existential freedom.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the paradigm shifting of Qur’anic interpretation on woman verses from Gadamerian perspective. This writing finds out three paradigms: classical, modern and neomodernism paradigm. Each paradigm has its own world view that necessary to its context. From Gadamerian perspective, the emergence of those three paradigms in Qur’anic interpretation about woman verses is necessity. As a text, Qur’an is not a dead object, but it will be understood by people from different point of views. In interpreting a text, an instrument is used to help finding out the right interpretation. Interpretation is not a hall of mirrors in which interpreters only see themselves in different poses and shapes depending on the shape and angle of the mirror which confronts them. Rather, interpretation is a process of listening to others through their words and deeds.
