Abstract

This article illustrated a brief review of some objective methods in assessing facial nerve function for facial nerve paralysis which were correlated with House-Brackmann Grading System (HBGS). A rigorous search of online databases such as Springer, Elsevier and IEEE was conducted from June, 2015 to November, 2016 to discover and analyze the previous works in facial nerve assessment methods for facial paralysis. Several domains such as facial grading system and methods used to evaluate the facial nerve function were extracted for further analysis. Different keywords were used to acquire the studies based on the desire criteria. A total of 8 articles were identified and were analyzed for inclusion in this search. In conclusion, this review has presented an initial overview for further improvements in objective facial nerve assessment which has to be correlated with subjective assessment to make it more reliable and useful in clinical practice.

Abstract

This paper presents an electromagnetically-actuated micropump for microfluidic application. The system comprises two modules; an electromagnetic actuator module and a diffuser module. Fabrication of the diffuser module can be achieved using photolithography process with a master template and a PDMS prepolymer as the structural material. The actuator module consists of two power inductors and two NdFeB permanent magnets placed between the diffuser elements. The choice of this actuation principle merits from low operating voltage (1.5 Vdc) and the flow direction can be controlled by changing the orientation of the magnet vibration. Maximum volumetric flow rate of the fabricated device at zero backpressure is 0.9756 µLs-1 and 0.4659 µLs-1 at the hydrostatic backpressure of 10 mmH2O at 9 Hz of switching speed.

Abstract

Hydrophobicity is one of the importance factors in the surface properties of materials. This work presents the development of a low-cost contact angle measurement system based on goniometric measurement using a low-cost digital camera, tilt control system for surface alignment and curvature approximation algorithm to determine the contact angle between the solid and spherical cap of a water droplet. The design is specifically targeted for measuring the contact angle of a Quartz Crystal Microbalance sensor in the form of HC-49/U with a disc diameter of 8.7mm.The contact angle measurement using goniometric measurement depends on the quality of captured image and calculation method for the angle determination. Proper alignment of the sample surface is required to minimize the discrepancy of the angle measurement of water drop surface profile caused by gravity. A PIC18F4550 microcontroller is used to control the motorized tilt platform to reduce the discrepancy between left and right contact angle value. Circle fit algorithm to determine the contact angle value from the captured image is used. Using the motorized tilt control system and circle fit algorithm, the developed contact angle measurement system able to measure the contact angle with discrepancy less than 1O.

Abstract

Recently, structured light 3D imaging devices have gained a keen attention due to their potential applications to robotics, industrial manufacturing and medical imaging. Most of these applications require high 3D precision yet high speed in image capturing for hard and/or soft real time environments. This paper presents a method of high speed image capturing for structured light 3D imaging sensors with FPGA based structured light pattern generation and projector-camera synchronization. Suggested setup reduces the time for pattern projection and camera triggering to 16msec from 100msec that should be required by conventional methods.

Abstract

This paper studies and identifies driver`s steering manoeuvre behaviour in near rear-end collision. Time-To-Collision (TTC) is utilized in defining driver’s emergency threat assessment. The target scenario is set up under real experimental environment and the naturalistic data from the experiment are collected. Four normal drivers are employed for the experiment to perform the manoeuvre. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed to model the behaviour of the driver`s steering manoeuvre. The results show that all drivers manage to perform steering manoeuvre within the safe TTC region and the modelling results from ANN are reasonably positive. With further studies and improvements, this model would benefit to evaluate the driving reliability to enhance traffic safety and Intelligent Transportation System.

Abstract

A new technology to produce biogas using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system from palm oil mill effluent (POME) was investigated. The batch experiments were examined at applied voltages of 15, 20 and 25 kV. The results showed that the highest yields of hydrogen and methane were achieved at an applied voltage of 25 kV after 1 hour were 2.42 and 1.32 mL/mL of POME, respectively. The biogas was composed of 65% hydrogen and 35% methane. In order to make the results of this study applicable to biogas plants, the effects of flowrate and consumed energy are important parameters that should be further investigated in a future study.

Abstract

In this paper, a mutual coupling studies is conducted between two-element array antenna on dual substrate. A single patch antenna is firstly designed on dual substrate layer to testify appropriate performance at 2.45 GHz. Subsequently, an array of two element patches on dual substrate are constructed with one of them is incorporated with three EBG unit cell on the bottom substrate. The radiating patch is on the top substrate, while the EBG unit cells is on the bottom substrate. With EBGs in separate layers from the antenna array, the antenna elements are closely separated by a distance of 22 mm with a significant reduced mutual coupling of -26.61 dB. This correspond to a distance reduction of 34.68%. The proposed structure implemented only three EBG unit cells. Apart from that, the study of overlapped case of EBG with the antenna is also presented.

Abstract

The present section deals with a new type of technique for designing an efficient two channel Quadrature Mirror Filter Bank with constant phase in frequency. For achieving the Perfect Reconstruction Condition in Filter bank, an attempt has been made to design the low pass prototype filter with its impulse response and frequency response in three regions namely pass band, stop band and transition band region. With the error in terms of Reconstruction and the attenuation in the stop band as seen in the prototype filter response, one can evaluate the performance of the introduced filter with the help of filter coefficients generated in the design examples that affects the quality of filter bank design under the constraints of Near Perfect Reconstruction Conditions.

Abstract

This paper presents a proposed integrated Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) type Fuzzy Logic control (TSK-FLC) with Antiwindup elements for a forkloader position control of a Mini Heavy Loaded Forklift Autonomous Guided Vehicle (MHeLFAGV). The study was carried out by modeling TSK-FLC as a close-loop control for the each axis of the fork-lift’s movement. The degree of membership is designed with reference to the system response, in which ultrasonic sensor with 1cm resolution is used. Moreover, the rule base is determined and optimized to deal with microcontroller processing speed. In order to cater for the windup phenomenon, a proportional and integrated antiwindup elements are integrated into the TSK-FLC model. This control strategy consumes less memory and is expected to increase the time response of the control system. The experiment and analysis is done on the actual forkloader unit of MHeLFAGV system. The experiment was done on the vertical axis motion since horizontal motion will have the same characteristic pattern of implementation and characteristic of tuning. The experiment shows that the proposed integrated TSK-FLC with antiwindup elements is able to speed up the time response of the system and eliminate the overshoot as well as oscillation on the forkloader movement.

Abstract

Fade dynamics is one of more important parameters when implementing Fade Mitigation Techniques (FMTs) to counteract an excessive attenuation that affect satellite communication systems operating above 10 GHz. The statistics of probable duration between two rain fade namely interfade duration enables system operator to estimate how long the system will need to recover before the next outage and assist in designing the FMTs. In this paper, interfade duration statistics have been derived from one year of slant path attenuation measurements data collected in Equatorial Johor Bahru at 12.2 GHz with elevation angle of 75.61o. The result had shown the dependency of number of events with attenuation thresholds. Empirical interfade duration statistics are also obtained and suitable model distribution are proposed.
